He was really terrific. He's also a fine musician. He also takes time to explain to you about your piano and gives you options. With Pianos and you could spend a fortune fixing them. He tells you the various levels you could look at. He was able at a very fair cost to bring it to a level that I could enjoy playing it.

Joe is an outstanding professional. He was here for many hours tuning the piano. He also made a repair to one of the handle pulls on the piano. I highly recommend Joe. He did a great jo. I will have him back again to tune the piano again in December.

He explained his fees up front. He said it would take about two hours to tune the piano and the fee would be $195. We had recently moved and it had been more then a few years since the piano was tuned. He ended up working longer then two hours but his fee remained the same. My piano sounds beautiful and I would be happy to recommend Joe's service to anyone looking for a reliable person to tune their piano.

Joe was incredibly professional and knowledgeable. He was running a bit late from his morning appointment, but took the time to call and inform me that he would be 15 minutes late. When he arrived, he inspected the piano as promised prior to doing any work. He explained the situation with the piano was not ideal since it had previously been stored in a basement resulting in warped wood and rusted strings. He was careful to go over the risk of strings breaking and the associated costs, all the while taking time to teach me about the various parts and functions of my piano. We agreed upon that he recommended and he went to work. Several hours later, Joe had our piano sounding absolutely beautiful. He took great care to clean up and even did a few minor repairs that he noticed free of charge. He was patient with our dog and engaging with my young daughter. I would recommend Joe to anyone in need of piano service.

I am delighted to have found Joe DeFazio and will happily use him for all our tuning needs on our new piano. When I found a piano on Craigslist that seemed like a good deal, Joe met me at the seller's home and I sat with him for 30 minutes while he took apart the whole instrument and walked me through each part. I loved how much I learned (and so did the seller). In a private conversation in front of the seller's home he gave me his full assessment and helped me establish that the asking price was more than fair. What I most appreciated was that the $75 fee he charged for that initial evaluation went toward the cost of tuning the new piano once it was delivered to our new house, so essentially I paid for the tuning but fixing the sticky keys on the piano was no additional charge. He'll be coming back in the fall to adjust the piano again once we get through the humidity of the summer!

Joe was wonderful. He explained that it would be better for me to be present for the evaluation, and he set up an appointment with the sellers that worked for me. I was 5 minutes late, but he had already arrived and taken the casework of the piano apart. I sat for half an hour, fascinated, as he explained every detila of the piano's manufacture. I have played piano for years and never knew a fraction of what I learned in those few minutes. He was soft spoken, thorough and professional. At the end he suggested we step outside for a final evaluation (away from the sellers of the piano) and was very helpful in his advice.
The best part was the price! It was $75 for the evaluation (which was half what I was expecting), and if I hire him to tune the piano once we move it, those $75 will go toward the cost of that tuning. So because I decided to buy the piano, the evaluation was essentially free of charge.
The only slight negative was that it took several days after my initial contact for Joe to call me back, but since I was in no hurry, this was not a problem for me, and he was worth the wait.

Very pleasant person and knowledgeable about what he does.  Fixed everything we hoped to in one trip.  We are very pleased with the result and highly recommend him for any piano repair/tuning needs.

Mr DeFazio was prompt in getting back to me. I had to cancel our first scheduled appointment because my job called me out of town, but he was very accommodating.
When he came, he was careful to examine each piano and give a careful estimate, noting possible problems that might cause price increases because of added material and labor. Thankfully, that did not happen, and despite the fact that my spinnet piano took longer than he expected (because of the more difficult access to the lever action), he did not increase his price.
I will definitely call Mr DeFazio to tune my pianos next year, and highly recommend his work. This is an excellent artisan who is committed to his craft.

He was very nice. Was obviously very knowledgeable about pianos. He examined the piano and explained to me the make and quality of my particular piano. He explained the tuning process and gave me a choice between a less expensive tuning versus a more thorough tuning. He also mentioned that due to the quality of the piano and the reasons we use it (i.e., practice by children), the less expensive option would meet our needs. I chose the less expensive option. After he spent some time tuning the piano, he told me he would need to do the more expensive process, but would only charge me for the less expensive option since that was what was agreed upon.

Joe chose a time to come tune the piano that was convenient for my wife and I and he showed up exactly when he said he would. He was very respectful of our home ie taking off shoes, asking where to put things we had on the piano, and greeting Buddy the Cat. He played the piano for a little bit and asked if I wanted the long or the short diagnosis on the instrument. When I said long, he proceeded to give me as much information about the advent of our piano as he could based on the components and workmanship that he saw in the piano. If there was anything that I did not understand he would go back and rephrase until I understood when he meant. He gave me different price points for what he could do (basic tuning and how long he thought that would hold, the tightening of a bunch of screws that were causing an annoying click, etc...) and then he began tuning. He took 2 passes at the piano while tuning it to help ensure that it was keeping in tune and, since I am a musician, told me a lot about the process he was going through as he did it.
3 days later I finally had time to sit and play the piano for a while. I am very happy. The piano sat for many years unplayed and therefore has not been tuned or upkept in some time. It has clearly opened up since the tuning. He warned me upfront about where I will always hear pitch issues and why, and also told me where I would hear the greatest sonorities on the piano and why. He is very friendly, knowledgeable to the highest extent, and very meticulous with his work. I will use him every time I have a piano issue, and I will send friends to him as well.

Joe returned my call same day to schedule the service. He discussed with me on the phone the approximate cost, and we scheduled the appointment. He was able to fit me in very quickly. He was on time and thoroughly examined my piano. Explained exactly what it needed and gave me much insight into the inner workings. He was incredibly professional and patient with all of my questions. The price he quoted me on the phone was exactly what he charged. I am extremely pleased and will definitely use him again for the next tuning.5-6 year

He arrived at the scheduled time and roughly reviewed my piano and then gave an estimated price for the job. Approximately 5 hours later my piano looked and played like it was brand new. He did not find additional damage so the price was exactly as he had quoted. I had not been able to use my piano because of damage and filth. Now I am enjoy playing because it is just like brand new! Overall I would use his services again and would recommend him.

Joe gave me an appointment for the following week. He gave me a window of time for his arrival and came within that window. He was respectful, courteous, and knowledgable. His explanations were clear. He gave me his credentials as a tuner and pianist. He quoted his expected costs, but he also gave me a higher quote based on further issues with the piano which might be uncovedred during the course of the tuning,. I was stunned by the affordability of his services. He began to work immediately, and he was finished in less than three hours. He taught me a lot about the piano as he explained what he had done. He charged the lower of his quotes.

As a bonus, Joe was eager to teach me about the piano, so that I could understand the repairs he antiicipated. His explanations were easy to understand and very interesting as well. He is a quite a nice and likeable person. He is trustworthy, and I felt comfortable with him in my house. He is not only a skilled craftsman, but a professional musician as well; he knows what to do and how the instrument should sound. For a modest fee he totally rejuvenated my piano. I really can't say enough about him. I would recommend him without any reservations, and I would use his services again in a heart beat.

Joseph thoroughly inspected our old piano, gave me a complete analysis of what was good and bad and what the risks for the future were. He fixed the detached key and the stuck hammers and brought it more or less back into tune; he suggested that he delay the precision tuning until later, since we would be moving the piano around and that might throw it out of tune.

I was very pleased with Joseph, and I'd be glad to engage him again.

This is the second piano I've had Joe inspect. Again, he was knowledgeable and clear in his description of the piano's problems and potential future problems. He gave me a reliable estimate of the cost to fix the parts of the piano that showed wear, but was honest to mention that the piano didn't really need repairs if I could live with the symptoms of the worn parts.

He's extremely courteous in his dealings with customers-- taking his shoes off before entering the piano seller's carpeted piano room, reminding me to mention to the piano mover (whom he recommended) that the seller's house had white carpets.

Honestly, there is no better piano expert in Pittsburgh.

Joe is extremely knowledgeable and professional. He drove an hour out of his way to meet me at the piano seller's house.
He explains everything that he's doing and tells it like it is. After the inspection, he recommended that I not buy the piano, based on the $800 - $1200 in repairs it would take to get the piano to a basic playable quality (unless, of course, I wanted it more for its furniture value-- it was beautifully refinished).

He will be my piano expert for hire for as long as he remains in the business!
