Maureen was my point-of-contact for scheduling. Mark developed the estimate and was helpful in explaining what needed to be done. Both individuals were awesome to work with.
Definitely recommend for any major plumbing projects in the home.
My hot water tank wasn't igniting or heating. It appeared that they tried but could not fix the part. The 2 plumbers did a thorough good job with installation and cleanup. they were skilled and nice and i'd hire them again if it weren't for 2 things.
My first issue was that I was given one option for a tank and a price but no information to know how much the tank was and labor. But I'm disabled and desperate for hot water, so I did what homeowners shouldn't, and said ok without pushing my few questions. I usually like researching what I'm buying, so this bugged me.. sure that's my fault, but if you're considering this company, don't expect them to go over options unless you push. And all contractors should detail their work.
The second most important issue was that an item was damaged by the plumbers. he was a really nice guy and tried to fix it unsuccessfully. No big deal, it would just cost $40 for a replacement part, and they just made what I assumed was a lot. but when I called the office , the angry office manager (owner?) said she wasn't going to pay for something her plumber broke. she would try to make him write me a check. it's been 3 weeks, I emailed and called with no response. A nice lady answered last week and said Maureen just talked to the plumber.
My issue is that , I just got hit for $850 which is a lot on a fixed income, and for 40 measly bucks, the company should have just written it off and said sorry, and thanks for the business. isn't that why we hire insured companies? I feel bad, but worrying about someone's bad mood, or being afraid to address even small things happens enough in life and doesn't belong here. forget the money, customer service is priceless.
A+ for skilled workers. D for professionalism of the actual company.
The first plumber (another plumber) that I called charged me $85 just to come look at the problems and tell me what needed to be done / how much it would cost. They told me that the cost of labor for fixing the toilet was $135 so I might as well replace it because the cost of labor to replace it was only $15 more ($150) and the toilet looked like it was on its last legs, they were surprised it wasn't leaking, etc. I estimated that a good toilet would cost me $150-$200 on top of labor. They looked at the attic and said they couldn't find the leak there. Consequently, they would have to open up my kitchen wall to see what was going on and repair the pipe. That would take at least 4-5 hours, so the cost would be $400-$500 dollars. (The work to repair and paint the wall would not be included and I'd have to either do it myself or pay someone else.) So I was looking at a total of up to $850 ($925 including the $85 fee) for both jobs, not including the cost of fixing my kitchen wall. They also mentioned that if they found that the pipe had problems going down into the basement, we might have to open up the basement ceiling to fix it. (Although upon inspection of the basement they said that they didn't see evidence of water damage / leaking.)
I paid the $85 and got a second opinion with Davey plumbing.
Mr. Davey came to assess the situation and give me a quote for how much it would cost, free of charge. He told me that my toilet could easily be fixed (both the leaning issues and the filling issue) and did not need to be replaced, and that I was unlikely to find a new toilet with a large enough base to cover the same area on the floor as the old toilet, which could lead to aesthetic issues. He estimated that it would take no longer than an hour to fix, costing about $125. He then went up to the attic and looked at the same pipe. When he couldn't find the leak in the area the first plumber had looked, he said he was almost sure the leak had to be coming from above given the nature of the water damage in the kitchen ceiling and asked if he could remove some insulation in another nearby area that the other plumber had not looked at. He found the leak, which had been caused by an improper repair that had happened some time in the past (probably to fix a burst pipe). He estimated that it would cost about $125 to properly repair the pipe. Total estimated cost for both jobs: $250.
I scheduled a time for Davey Plumbing to come do the work. The plumber who arrived was very courteous and cleaned up after himself. Both jobs took him a total of about an hour, so I only ended up paying a total of $140 for parts and labor for both jobs. So far we've been very pleased with the results of the work -- no more issues with the toilet and the upstairs pipe does not appear to be leaking anymore. We are very pleased that we didn't have to go through all the additional headache of opening up our kitchen wall and pay an additional $850+ costs / hassle of fixing wall to try to fix the exact same problem.
I will definitely call Davey Plumbing again in the future.
Other interactions have included very punctual service calls during the heating season, minor cleaning issues and small component replacement.
My latest call was a hot water heater emergency on Feb 1 2013. Long story short, the gas company red tagged my hot water heater after striking the gas line in the street and shutting everyone down. This was at 10am. One call to Davey, explained that my 22 year old water heater either needed service or replacement, they outlined my options. I chose the new heater option, and by 4pm, hot water was restored. Knowing full well my urgency, I was given fair and honest pricing as always.
They're so good I ussually just tell them to lock up when they're done. Very professionally run operation.
