This was a positive experience. They came out on a fairly short notice. The workman's behavior was excellent and they did the job. I thought they were a teeny bit pricey than expected. The price reflected two men working for half a day. The clean-up was good.

Their work was fine. They were going to get shingles to match the roof and the salesman made a big deal out of making them match. Someone found out later on that the shingles did not match. We called them and apparently there was some sort of miscommunication, but they did not even really give me an excuse. I had already paid them. The shingles did sort of match. The shingles that we wanted were discontinued, and supposedly they were going to find the right shingles. The salesman was personable plus and he always returned my calls. I can't say that I don't like their work, but it was just that technicality. I should also mention that they do guarantee their work.

Salesman came within a few days of calling to request an estimate. Gave me separate estimates for the house and garage. They gave me a new estimate when my neighbors decided to do their part of the roof. Received paperwork from Burns & Scalo along with contract instructing how to "get ready" for the work to be done (empty attic, clear patio & walkways, etc) along with a guesstimate of when they would be out (5 to 6 weeks; they actually made it out in about 3-4). Workers arrived promptly each morning when they said they would, had a few days rain delay so they finished in approximately a week. They worked carefully, no damage around property, cleaned up well and the work looks good. The brand new roofing was woven into the year old roofing on the porch & is a perfect match. Final cost added $490 for wood replacement (35' on house & 10' on garage).

Burns & Scalo put a complete new roof on our house in the summer of 2000. We got CertainTeed Landmark architectural shingles with a 40-year warranty. They had put in a ridge vent and a powered fan (standard features). Come January 2008 I noticed that almost all the wood surfaces in our attic area were covered with a black mold. Our bathroom vent DOES NOT vent directly into the attic, so that was ruled out early on. I called Burns & Scalo who sent a rep to our house to look at the attic. First he tried to tell me that the heat leaking through the pulldown stairs was causing the moisture in the attic to condense out. I wasn't buying it, Then the Burns & Scalo rep began to tell me about new technology, only developed in the last several years which is a much better way to vent a gable roof. It's called SmartVent by DCI. Burns & Scalo said that the original roof warranty had expired in 2005, so that they were not obligated in any way to rectify the problem. They gave me an estimate to replace the entire roof AGAIN for $13,000. I contacted another roofer whom I found through Angie's list: The owner, John Kindler also came over to look at the attic and give me an estimate for repair work. John pointed out that the gable vents had been left open to the attic air space, which meant that air was coming in the gable vents and going right out through the ridge vent. You are supposed to have one OR the other of these vents, but NOT BOTH. Now I would've thought that a reputable roofing company like Burns & Scalo would KNOW this. I was in fact relying on their EXPERTISE AS ROOFERS. Well so much for that. So I wasted my money on the 40-yr shingles. Who knew I would be replacing the entire roof again after only 7.5 years? I tried very hard to negotiate a better deal w/ Burns & Scalo but the best they could do for me was to extend their standard 5 year warranty to 7 years, and throw in a free annual roof inspection for those first 7 years. Their cost stayed firm at $13k and that was not acceptable to me. I expected them to be accountable for their lack of judgement.

Fran did a great job. Came in right at his quote. They were on time and helped us have our house ready to go on the market in April. Great job... don't keep looking... just call Fran.

They did a great job. They were here when they said they would be, they did do quality work and the price that they gave me was reasonable. I would use them again and recommend them to others.

I liked the quality of work and materials. They did what I asked them to do. I have had no problems with my gutters, etc since then. One repair was actually a repair. I felt these guys knew what they were doing.

Phone call never returned to schedule work.

Everything was excellent. They're top rated on the list, and I was kind of skeptical at first, but now I have my own comments to add to it. I can definitely see why they were top rated. They were very punctual, professional and they got everything done quickly and cleaned up very well after themselves. I would certainly recommend them to others and I would use them again in the future.

Their pricing was reasonable. I was afraid they were going to tell me that I needed a new roof but they fixed it no problem. It was exactly what they quoted me.

The rear gutters were badly clogged. There were plants growing out of the gutters! 5 missing pieces of slate were replaced. They came when they said they would, and did the job in 2 hours, with 2 men.

Burns & Scalo was the lowest overall bid. They recommended a new slate roofing product which was more cost competitive, but provided a similar look to our original roof. The project ended up taking longer than expected due to the complexity of the job, but B&S managed the job well. Follow-up and responsiveness were excellent.

When called I called to make an appointment they took all my information down and told me a sales person named Szopo would call me back to make an appointment. A week went by and I didn't get a call back, so I took the initiative and called that company again; they took down again my cell number and said Mr. Szopo would call me. When he finally called me back, he started the conversation right away with, "I see you already have other offers, I just want to let you know our company is not cheap and I'm very busy. I don't want to waste my time if you are only looking for a cheaper offer." He in general sounded very arrogant and somewhat rude. Well, price alone is not the deciding factor for me. I want good quality work from a reliable company that is not over-priced (which I also explained to him) and I know myself that the cheapest company probably does a bad job. So I convinced him to come out to my house to give me an estimate. The appointment was supposed to be at noon, so I went home from work and was at the house from 11:30 and nobody showed up. Than I called the company again and was given the cell phone number of the sales person. I left a message there (after trying to call several times with nobody picking up), but he never called back, so I went back to work since I didn't have the time to wait all afternoon at my house without being sure if he ever shows up (and this was probably a smart choice, since he did not leave any note nor did he call back, so I guess he came never to the house). I guess he decided he does not want to waste his time since I already had other offers. I certainly can understand that schedules can run late and that previous jobs can take longer than expected, but the least I expect is to get a call that he can't make it to the promised time and provide me with a time frame when he will be able to come. So this company has proved to me that they are unreliable. If even the sales process shows problems, I don't want to deal with them when they do the job (or even worse have to fix problems created). They are just totally unresponsive and arrogant. I even sent email to the company, but they did not bother to reply. Guess they have plenty of other customers and don't care about one more or less. [correction: I got home later that night and an there was an email from Jack Scalo, responding to my email -- he was the owner of the company and apologized for the experience.]

They did excellent work and I would highly recommend them. I really trust this company and they are very experienced, polite and have excellent customer service.

I called during a heavy rain storm on Sunday 11 May and left a distress message. No response. I called again on Wednesday, 14 May and talked to an operator who said a "salesman" would call. No call. Today I checked Angie's List again, called Josowitz Roofing. They had a guy at my house in less than an hour! He fixed the immediate problem and will come back for a full inspection later.

They showed up when they said they would. They finished in 2 days. They did a great job. The roof no longer leaks when it rains. I do wish they would have swept the area with a magnet to pick up any extra nails. We did find some on the deck and in the lawn. We have dogs and young kids, so it was a concern.

Called office to schedule service and service provided within 5 days of call. Two man crew listened to my requests and worked effectively to repair damaged gutters. Cleaned all other gutters and installed one metal diverter plate. Very satisfied with the timeliness of service, quality of work and value.

The initial contact (in August of 2007) was very favorable. Their bid was the highest but also the most detailed. We were promised that the work would be completed in 4-6 weeks. We sent them our deposit. Then we waited almost 6 months. After 3 months we contacted the company and tried to find out the status of our order. We did hear from a company representative who told us that the work would be completed soon. The roofing crew arrived in January and replaced most of the roof in 2 days. The work was completed in February. The work was done well, with minimal disruption and minimal mess.

They came when they said they would and were very courteous. I also appreciated their honesty by not selling us to anything that did not need to be fixed right away. We went ahead and signed a contract with them to come out twice a year and perform an inspection on our roof.

They said it was going to cost me under $100 but over $50 and I thought they had a free estimate. They said that it would cost an amount of money if they came out because they would have to patch it. I just wanted them to come and give me an estimate on the whole roof. They were polite.

Burns and Scalo estimated $13,650; later asked new contract at $16,725. Also I paid for leak in the roof ($332 emergency service), damaged box gutter ($2870) and deteriorated wood. They began in October after I had three chimneys removed, and a fourth chimney rebuilt, by another company. B & S had problems with their crew; there were only 2 on the job for at least half the time. One of the men threw debris off the roof. B & S failed to cover or remove drains during roofing; did not clean them after the job, causing water to back up and leaks in the basement. They also damaged a box gutter, causing leaks into my second floor office. Thrown bricks/debris caused hole in third floor bedroom and damage to neighbor siding and outdoor furn. Their ladder moved carelessly broke stained glass window. Ruined lawn. The turret shingles look unevenly spaced, worse than prior to reroofing. The company has taken complaints by phone and in writing but has not responded with offer to compensate losses. Report Update: 7/10/09 A Judgement has been entered regarding this situation.

Dave Janosco did a fine job. We appreciate finding workers who do small as well as large jobs. They help us preserve a slate roof that we want to keep.

Serviceman was very professional and also easy to talk to. He explained our dilemma clearly and even made a paper model of the problem to illustrate where the leak had been coming in.
