Allied Millwork

About us

This industrious millwork establishment is a small custom sash and door shop, very similar to what existed in most major cities a century ago. We fabricate architectural and historic doors and windows. Dedicated to creating the highest quality product, we employ only the most knowledgeable and skilled craftsman from an array of woodworking backgrounds. Remaining a small team of four enables us to have a great amount of flexibility and offer a beautifully handcrafted final product at a competitive price. We manufacture a very diverse range of products and work with a wide variety of professionals including architects, contractors, and even the homeowners themselves. In a modern window industry, which mainly constructs its windows using limited lifespan materials such as aluminum and vinyl, Allied Millwork prides itself on excellence and the superior craftsmanship exhibited through its wood windows and doors.

Went very well.  Had to wait a while but worth it.  Top quality workmanship and materials.

I had to put about half down on the job, the remainder to be paid on satisfactory completion. After more than 4 month delay, they were ready to make the door and asked me in to clarify some points on my drawings.  At that point I realized they were going to fasten the raised panels in the door using plant-on moldings.  This method is inferior to true frame and panel construction (cope and stick).  When I brought this up the owner told me that approach would take over $2000 worth of new cutters, etc, which I knew to be false.  I got my money back, but was charged a $50 cancelatiion fee, which was $10 more than stated in my contract.
Bottom line is that if you want true frame and panel door construction methods, don't deal with this guy.
Response from Allied Millwork

"We were upfront with the customer concerning our backlog and manufacturing techniques from the order inception. He made numerous changes while his order was in the queue, and decided after much time spent on our behalf that "he would make his doors himself"."

My windows look and feel authentic while conserving heat in the winter. We fitted them ourselves - my husband is a carpenter - and I intend to replace all my old single-paned sash windows with Allied Millwork's windows.

The owner, Chuck Stein, was so rude to my wife that she later called me practically in tears.  Mr. Stein is an impatient, bullying man and I am surprised Allied Millwork has any customers.  My wife was trying to describe what we wanted but Mr. Stein would not listen to her and criticized her unfamiliarity with aspects of building terminology.  After this awful conversation, I called Mr. Stein, assuming that, upon hearing how upset he had made my wife, he would at least feel bad about it.  But no, Mr. Stein tried to justify his behavior.  Mr. Stein made it very clear that he has all the customers and work he needs and if you don't like the way he is, you should go to someone else, which is what we will do.
Response from Allied Millwork

"These people were extraordinarily rude from the first call, and went downhill from there with the second call. That is as far as it went, but they made quite a (bad) impression! Some people just cannot be dealt with, and that certainly seemed to be the case with this couple. If we are not treated with decency, we do not want to engage in business with you. That is what this couple was told by us."

They were very good.  They built wooden storm windows for me.  This was a number of years ago.  About 3 or 4 years ago.  The windows were great.  They fit great.  I was very happy.  The quality of their work was very good.

well;  excellent value for a custom-made wood window (dual-pane, insulated) with the jamb liners for easy cleaning or removal

is actually cheaper than most/all national brands (anderson/pella/marvin/k&k, etc) for higher quality and local labor

I paid exactly what they quoted. They are very good. They do what you want, and they do it well. I met with him. He was professional, offered suggestions, and was cooperative. He made suggestions to improve what I wanted him to do. The windows fit perfectly and are very nicely done.

I wanted to replace all of the windows in a victorian home that I am restoring. I had a couple of tricky situations to deal with. First, I had two window openings with stained glass transoms. I wanted the art glass panels to remain in tact and integral with the new windows. The exterior trim for all of the windows was also covered in aluminum, which presented some issues. I shopped around for windows for several months, and even called the big name companies like Pella and Kolbe. No one could confidently provide a proposal to deal with the art glass panels. Chuck, from Allied Millwork, however, had a wealth of knowledge and had specific solutions to suggest. He said that he could build new windows with transom openings and install my art glass into the transom with an exterior double pane window. He put me in touch with a stained glass artist who restored my art glass. Chuck also carefully explained my new window options, including trying to salvage the original jambs. or doing a full tear out with new units with new jambs. Ultimately, Chuck recommended the full tear out option. Chuck took careful measurements and coordinated with my installer. He even referred me to a millwork company (Mars Lumber) as a great source for new interior trim. Chuck even game me a variety of balance options for the new windows. I did not like the look of the standard vinyl balances/tracks, so Chuck recommended "invisible" balances, which look great. Chuck also built two Oriel style windows (the large picture windows with transoms). Other companies said they could not build a window of this size in the original style. Chuck was able to build a new window that exactly like the original, and it is even operable. Chuck and his team are true craftsmen. Chuck happy to take the time to help you understand your options--a true rarity in today's times.

They did a wonderful job. The schedule did not quite work out as fine. They had delays because they had some other rush orders in between. In the end it worked out just beautifully. We were not in that much of a rush so it was okay. We ended up with a really beautiful front door. It went pretty well overall. I liked their craftsmanship and their attention to detail. We also needed to have stained glass windows remounted and he provided me with contacts of carpenters who could do the work. There was good coordination of the three segments. We would use him again in the future if we needed to and if we could afford him.

good; the windows look like the belong on the house (as opposed to vinyl replacements, which i feel don't look very nice on an old house)

Dealing with Chuck was one of the most pleasant experiences I had during my entire historic home renovation project. He is extremely professional, detailed, and takes the time to make everything right. He came to measure and re-measure due to some unexpected changes that occurred along the way. The end result was simply beautiful. The wood pieces looked so fantastic that we had to scratch some elements of the original design to expose more exterior wood. More work was added as the project expanded, and he was able to handle it all, amidst a busy schedule. He was even kind enought to deliver the large window unit to my sister-in-law's house for winter storage in their garage and then pick it up again for the final installation. I am extremely pleased, and highly recommend Allied Millwork.

The owner Chuck Stein was very helpful and provided guidance to me relative to taking the needed measurements. He also provided an estimated completion date and met that date. The windows were made of solid Spanish Cedar and the quality of work was excellent. Four storm windows approximately 30" X 40" were $800.00

THESE FOLKS ARE TRUE OLD-FASHIONED CRAFTSMEN!! THE WINDOW AND DOORS THEY BUILT FOR US ARE A WORK OF ART AND RECEIVE MANY, MANY COMPLIMENTS FROM VISITORS TO OUR HOME. CHUCK WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL TO WORK WITH. IT SOMETIMES TAKES A LITTLE WHILE TO HAVE CALLS RETURNED -- IT SEEMS LIKE HE DOES MOST OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE WORK AS WELL AS SALES AND INSTALLATION COORDINATION, AND WORKS WITH THE GUYS IN THE SHOP. BUT HE DOES RETURN ALL CALLS. THE WINDOW AND DOORS WERE DELIVERED WITHIN A WEEK OF THE DATE ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED. WE ARE VERY PLEASED WITH THEIR WORK.
