We LOVE the work that A Satin Finish did for us. They were incredibly reliable, professional, kind, prompt and total experts of their craft. They took our 100-year-old pine floors and made them new. I was so impressed with how they contained the dust from sanding and treated our home with respect. They were super reliable with keeping our scheduled dates and times. They did a beautiful and meticulous job of finishing the floors. And I thought they were incredibly affordable. I would absolutely hire them again and recommend them without reservation!

When the company my realtor recommended cancelled at the last minute I turned to Angie's List and was lucky to find Jason with A Satin Finish. He did a beautiful job, was prompt and finished on schedule as he promised. I was very happy with the results and would highly recommend him.

When I called A satin finish  they returned my call within a day and setup an appointment within 2 days. They were easy to work with.

They came out and went right to work. they sanded my floor which was pretty bad.  It looks like a whole new room.  I have had so many compliments.  It was the best money spent.  I will have them back for my livingroom.

Jo, from A Satin Finish, called us back within hours of our phone call and set us up with an estimate and a date for the work to be performed. A Satin Finish was the only provider (we called 3 businesses listed here on Angie's List) to even call us back, and we're glad they did. The work was completed as planned, with the carpet removal, sanding and first coat of stain completed on a Saturday, then the second coat of stain finished two days later on Monday. We were able to fully use our dining room again on Wednesday--5 days after the work began, which was exactly the original plan. The final price was actually slightly less than the estimate. The floors look amazing--a rich honey color with a ton of color variation and a real rustic, original look that compliments the original marble mantel, fireplace and wood trim of our old North Side home.
In addition, the workers were professional and well-spoken. They actually showed up early both days. They covered everything in our basement, where the stain may have leaked through, and covered all the entrances to other rooms, leaving very little mess/dust. I've heard of the mess that refinishing floors can leave, but I honestly noticed so little upon the completion of this job.
I'd highly recommend A Satin Finish to anyone wanting to restore an old home's original flooring. We love our new floors!!

They did a nice job of blending the newly finished floor with one that had been done years ago.  The smell from the refinishing products was strong, but they did seal the doors to the room with plastic  which helped somewhat.

A Satin Finish did an excellent job. I liked the work that they did. The bedroom was two smaller bedrooms when we had purchased the house. When they took the connecting wall out they put a plank where there was no hard wood. They covered everything with mortar wall and when I ripped the mortar wall off, the whole middle section of the floor was not finished. They repaired the floor and then they refinished it, you can't even tell. They are all 'A's across the board. I have used them quite before.

We found A Satin Finish through the contractor who re-did our third floor, and the work they did up there was terrific.
For this work, they came in and pulled up the carpets on the second floor, only to find that there was workable flooring only under two of the bedrooms, not the third. They had to lay a new floor in that room.
Their refinishing work is excellent -- they've refinished the original pine and oak for us in our 106-year-old house, and had to repair damage here and there. The floors are smooth, comfortable, and beautiful.
The floor they laid is also lovely -- they created a frame around the tiled fireplace in our bedroom, and all the joints they cut for that are perfect.
They are very fair and reasonably priced and pleasant to work with. No surprises on pricing, and in fact they gave us a little break because of all the work they've done for us. We are very happy that we have gotten rid of all carpeting and now  have three floors of 100% wood floors, almost all over a hundred years old!

We had a badly stained hardwood floor and when the guys arrived they clearly explained that the stains may be exaggerated with the sanding and staining process. They offered to sand and stain a small portion to show me what it would look like. I did not like the results so they offered to stop the work and not charge me a dime! I offered to pay for the time they already spent here but they didn't want anything. They said they wanted me to be happy with the result since their name would be attached to the work. I would definately trust this company again.

The company did a fantastic job with our floors.  The scheduler (Jill?) is helpful and also funny in a dry kind of way.  I think she could come across as gruff to some, but she's really just a straight-talker.  Very nice and funny once you talk to her some.
In taking out a wet bar in the family room, we found that the flooring did not continue underneath as we hoped (and thought) it might.  We had already booked 2 days to do the floors which turned out not to be enough time.  We were worried we would have to "get creative" and maybe do a different pattern in the patch area because it was large (2' x 6').  On top of that, the floor is set on an angle and consists of standard boards alternated with wide boards.  The guys were able to patch the floor beautifully and followed the pattern very well.  You can't even tell now where the patch is.  It did add a day's work and some additional costs for materials and labor, but they did a great job and were up front about the costs.
I would recommend them and will use them in the future.

As other reviewers have noted, they do not do in-house estimates. I had originally taken measurements myself, but when a separate contractor came & provided room sizes I simply gave those same sizes to A Satin Finish.  They accepted those measurements without question. They were a bit less expensive than the other company, but only by $100 or so. I was responsible for removing the wall-to-wall carpet under both bids.
Because we were refinishing 1.5 floors of a 2 story house, I scheduled the work about 4 months in advance, so it could occur when we'd be away on vacation. They kept the date locked in on their calendar without issue.
A week before the work was scheduled they came to the house, sanded a test strip of flooring, and applied a few different stains we thought we'd like. Apparently they normally do this on the first day of work, but they accommodated our vacation schedule by coming in the evening of the preceding week. We picked the stains, signed the contract, and provided a key to the house. There was no down payment requested. The work was entirely done while we were away.
Most of the floors in this 45 year-old house had holes from the carpet tack strips. They filled the holes, sanded the floors smooth, applied the stain and two coats of finsih. I was particularly pleased with the way they cleaned up after themselves. We had moved all of the upstairs furniture into the living & family rooms on the first floor, and if dust from the sanding had gotten in there it would have been a mess. I wasn't here to see how they draped and sealed the doorways leading to those rooms, but it sure was successful.
The floors look great and I'm delighted with their work.

Called and spoke with Jo.  Explained that we were on a time crunch and wanted to have the floors refinished at the end of the month - about 3 weeks away.  They were booked into the next month.  But luckily they had a cancellation and we were able to get on their schedule about 10 days later.  Slight miscommunication, as we thought they were to start on the 17th.  Received a phone call on the 13th saying they would be there on the 15th.  It all worked out.
This is the first time we have had floors refinished.  They turned out beautifully.  The only "downside" is that we lost a week of work in that whole area because we could not be on the floors from the 15-20th.  But they turned out beautifully and will be a big selling point.  The other thing we were surprised about is that they only do the tread, not the riser for the steps.  We assumed stairs meant all parts.  But as I said this was our first experience with hardwood floor refinishing.  (Didn't ask, but maybe they do this for an additional charge.)  We are just going to paint the risers white to match the trim.
We were expecting a lot of dust, but other than needing to lightly dust down the walls, it was pretty clean upon completion.  They left us some stain so we could do a handrail that we are going to be installing, so that it would match.
I liked that after the first day of sanding, they prepared samples on the actual floor.  That way we were able to pick our color/stain choice and see exactly what it would look like on our floors.

These guys did a great job.  They answered all my questions, stuck to the estimate, showed up when they were supposed to and finished on time.  I would highly recommend this company.  I am very pleased with the work done and the price.  They are busy so plan to make your appoiment 6 weeks out.

We purchased a home with a remodeled kitchen/dining room with a newly installed pre-finished hardwood floor.  The rest of the house had old hardwood floors that needed refinishing and didn't match the color of the new floor.  This company came in, sanded a patch of old floor near the new floor and mixed a stain that matched the new finish.  We left for the holidays and came back to an immaculately finished floor.  I would hire this company again in a heartbeat.  My floors look brand new and now they match.

I could not be happier.  The guys were always here on time and on the days they specified.  The sanding job was perfect.  I could not believe how much better things looked just sanded (I had paint, joint compound, dirt and dust on the floors).  They stained the actual floors as "samples" instead of providing small samples on different wood - so I knew exactly how each would look (went with jacobean - gorgeous grain look on the old oak floors).  You cannot tell where they put the stain samples now that the work is complete - they sanded right out.  Almost no bubbles in the polyurethane.  I almost thought these floors were a lost cause and covered them with something, which would have been more expensive and far less attractive.  Thanks to Clinton Faust (GC, also on Angie's List) for recommending that I attempt to have the oak refinished first.  A Satin Finish did an amazing job, did it quickly, and at a price far below that of putting new flooring down.

The guys showed up on time, and had the floors recoated in a single day.  The floors looked very good, and a year an a half later they still look great.  I would definitely use their services again, and would contact them for an estimate for complete refinishing.  Highly recommend them.

First, let me say that our floors look fantastic. They were the original hardwoods in a 60 year old house, and though not terrible, there were a number of areas with damage, and the stain was sort of turning orange.  A Satin Finish worked within very tight time constraints so that our floors would be done before we moved into a new house.  The guys provided 4 choices of stains once the floors were sanded, so we were able to pick a color that very closely matched newly laid wood floors in adjacent rooms, and the results are great.

However, if you are looking for a lot of communication along the way, these are not the guys for you.  I scheduled times for the sanding, staining and sealing with the office manager Jo (their mom) and she was very helpful working out a time for them to come.  Other than that and a call the day before giving me a four hour window of when they would show up, nothing.  The first day of work, the guys show up and start working. We walked around, and I showed them a place where there was a gap between the base boards and the floors (probably from past wall to wall carpet) and they told me that I could get a carpenter to fix it, but all they do is refinish floors.  They provided no explanation of the process or what to expect, which I later found out includes that the shoe molding would be scuffed (it actually looked like it was stained).  When I called about this, I was told that it was in my contract (which they forgot to have me sign and didn't mention), and that all floor refinishers leave these marks.

In the end, they returned and reimbursed me for the work that my handyman did to replace the scuffed/stained shoe molding.  In the future, I would probably schedule farther in advance with another company that provides more complete services.  For instance, in a room where we need to have the carpets removed and will probably need some new molding, and I would prefer to have one company take care of the whole thing.  If all you need is to have your floors refinished, these guys can do that very well.

After calling a few other companies, we decided on Satin Finish since their quote (by phone) was well below the others. We provided them with the square footage and the final cost was very, very close to what was quoted. We had a kitchen with hardwood floors that had never been finished. A Satin Finish was realistic, over the phone, regarding what sort of outcome we could expect with regards to that, but we decided to refinish the kitchen anyways. We had to book our appointment over a month out, but this seemed like a busy time of year for this sort of work.

A Satin Finish professionals showed up on time on the day of our appointment and began to cover with plastic any areas that could be damaged. They also sanded and quickly stained a few areas so we could see what sort of finish we wanted. In the kitchen they tested a few areas as well to make sure the wood was still in good condition. As they progressed throughout the week to finish up the job, they called a few times to keep us informed. Also, they made sure to lock up and close windows once they were done for the day.

We are very pleased with the results of A Satin Finish. Floors look great and the kitchen turned out well. There were a few dark spots there, but that is only due to the very old wood that was never treated . A Satin Finish left the house clean - hardly any dust to clean up. We would definitely recommend their work!

They do their estimates by phone, which is a little different, but as long as you have the measurements, you should be fine.

We called about 7 weeks before they were able to come, and they did a great job predicting when they would start our job, despite the fact that it was still several weeks out. They also call a few days before to confirm their start date.

The two guys who finished our floors were nice, and did a pretty good job cleaning up, given all the dust that sanding generates. The only downside is that they dinged our plaster walls in a couple of places.

All in all, we are happy with their work. The floors looks great.
