When I called A satin finish they returned my call within a day and setup an appointment within 2 days. They were easy to work with.
They came out and went right to work. they sanded my floor which was pretty bad. It looks like a whole new room. I have had so many compliments. It was the best money spent. I will have them back for my livingroom.
In addition, the workers were professional and well-spoken. They actually showed up early both days. They covered everything in our basement, where the stain may have leaked through, and covered all the entrances to other rooms, leaving very little mess/dust. I've heard of the mess that refinishing floors can leave, but I honestly noticed so little upon the completion of this job.
I'd highly recommend A Satin Finish to anyone wanting to restore an old home's original flooring. We love our new floors!!
For this work, they came in and pulled up the carpets on the second floor, only to find that there was workable flooring only under two of the bedrooms, not the third. They had to lay a new floor in that room.
Their refinishing work is excellent -- they've refinished the original pine and oak for us in our 106-year-old house, and had to repair damage here and there. The floors are smooth, comfortable, and beautiful.
The floor they laid is also lovely -- they created a frame around the tiled fireplace in our bedroom, and all the joints they cut for that are perfect.
They are very fair and reasonably priced and pleasant to work with. No surprises on pricing, and in fact they gave us a little break because of all the work they've done for us. We are very happy that we have gotten rid of all carpeting and now have three floors of 100% wood floors, almost all over a hundred years old!
In taking out a wet bar in the family room, we found that the flooring did not continue underneath as we hoped (and thought) it might. We had already booked 2 days to do the floors which turned out not to be enough time. We were worried we would have to "get creative" and maybe do a different pattern in the patch area because it was large (2' x 6'). On top of that, the floor is set on an angle and consists of standard boards alternated with wide boards. The guys were able to patch the floor beautifully and followed the pattern very well. You can't even tell now where the patch is. It did add a day's work and some additional costs for materials and labor, but they did a great job and were up front about the costs.
I would recommend them and will use them in the future.
Because we were refinishing 1.5 floors of a 2 story house, I scheduled the work about 4 months in advance, so it could occur when we'd be away on vacation. They kept the date locked in on their calendar without issue.
A week before the work was scheduled they came to the house, sanded a test strip of flooring, and applied a few different stains we thought we'd like. Apparently they normally do this on the first day of work, but they accommodated our vacation schedule by coming in the evening of the preceding week. We picked the stains, signed the contract, and provided a key to the house. There was no down payment requested. The work was entirely done while we were away.
Most of the floors in this 45 year-old house had holes from the carpet tack strips. They filled the holes, sanded the floors smooth, applied the stain and two coats of finsih. I was particularly pleased with the way they cleaned up after themselves. We had moved all of the upstairs furniture into the living & family rooms on the first floor, and if dust from the sanding had gotten in there it would have been a mess. I wasn't here to see how they draped and sealed the doorways leading to those rooms, but it sure was successful.
The floors look great and I'm delighted with their work.
This is the first time we have had floors refinished. They turned out beautifully. The only "downside" is that we lost a week of work in that whole area because we could not be on the floors from the 15-20th. But they turned out beautifully and will be a big selling point. The other thing we were surprised about is that they only do the tread, not the riser for the steps. We assumed stairs meant all parts. But as I said this was our first experience with hardwood floor refinishing. (Didn't ask, but maybe they do this for an additional charge.) We are just going to paint the risers white to match the trim.
We were expecting a lot of dust, but other than needing to lightly dust down the walls, it was pretty clean upon completion. They left us some stain so we could do a handrail that we are going to be installing, so that it would match.
I liked that after the first day of sanding, they prepared samples on the actual floor. That way we were able to pick our color/stain choice and see exactly what it would look like on our floors.
See the description above.
However, if you are looking for a lot of communication along the way, these are not the guys for you. I scheduled times for the sanding, staining and sealing with the office manager Jo (their mom) and she was very helpful working out a time for them to come. Other than that and a call the day before giving me a four hour window of when they would show up, nothing. The first day of work, the guys show up and start working. We walked around, and I showed them a place where there was a gap between the base boards and the floors (probably from past wall to wall carpet) and they told me that I could get a carpenter to fix it, but all they do is refinish floors. They provided no explanation of the process or what to expect, which I later found out includes that the shoe molding would be scuffed (it actually looked like it was stained). When I called about this, I was told that it was in my contract (which they forgot to have me sign and didn't mention), and that all floor refinishers leave these marks.
In the end, they returned and reimbursed me for the work that my handyman did to replace the scuffed/stained shoe molding. In the future, I would probably schedule farther in advance with another company that provides more complete services. For instance, in a room where we need to have the carpets removed and will probably need some new molding, and I would prefer to have one company take care of the whole thing. If all you need is to have your floors refinished, these guys can do that very well.
A Satin Finish professionals showed up on time on the day of our appointment and began to cover with plastic any areas that could be damaged. They also sanded and quickly stained a few areas so we could see what sort of finish we wanted. In the kitchen they tested a few areas as well to make sure the wood was still in good condition. As they progressed throughout the week to finish up the job, they called a few times to keep us informed. Also, they made sure to lock up and close windows once they were done for the day.
We are very pleased with the results of A Satin Finish. Floors look great and the kitchen turned out well. There were a few dark spots there, but that is only due to the very old wood that was never treated . A Satin Finish left the house clean - hardly any dust to clean up. We would definitely recommend their work!
We called about 7 weeks before they were able to come, and they did a great job predicting when they would start our job, despite the fact that it was still several weeks out. They also call a few days before to confirm their start date.
The two guys who finished our floors were nice, and did a pretty good job cleaning up, given all the dust that sanding generates. The only downside is that they dinged our plaster walls in a couple of places.
All in all, we are happy with their work. The floors looks great.
