He started out very pleasant and claimed to be experienced in painting homes. The name of his company is Kerrigan's Professional Handyman Services. We agreed to time and materials where I was provided most of the materials and paid him weekly. I moved the furniture and expected he would be putting down tarps to cover the furniture and carpets. He was asked to wear shoe covers to walk through the areas of the house he was not painting. Turns out he didn't have a clue how to use show covers appropriately. He wore the shoe covers as if they were shoes and tracked a mess throughout the rest of the house. When asked to use them appropriately he got defensive. He was even using them to walk up/down his ladders which to me was a safety hazard. He didn't cover the carpets or furniture except to use a small piece of plastic that he moved around with him as he painted which left paint splatter all over the floors, carpets and baseboards. Again when confronted to be more careful he got defensive. I was spending an inordinate amount of time having to clean up after him. He even took my personal dust buster which I offered to clean up one small mess and used it as one of his tools. It was new when he started and looked like a painters tool when I took it back and told him to get his own. He was also unable to paint without putting tape on all the window trim which had been previously painted. When he saw he was taking off the window paint he continued to put the tape on the window trim making it necessary to repaint the trim which had cost close to $1000 to be painted the first time. It was excessive taping of the windows. I was now looking at having to pay him to redo the window trim in every room. He obviously didn't take too well to being given him instructions or feedback, possibly because I am a woman. He walked out in the middle of the job leaving me with a room torn apart, stuff from that room in two other rooms and a mess as to how I was going to get the job done. He left a message on my answering machine telling me he wasn't coming back. I run a business from the house and it seriously affected my business as well as the personal part of my home. He left when he knew I was with patients and wouldn't be available to talk. On a positive note he did make a really nice base for my rain barrell.
