The installation of the gas insert went well, except for the fact that they removed the existing log holder that was sitting in the fireplace without asking us if we wanted it. When we were able to go to The Stove Shop and look for the holder in their scrap pile, they determined that it must have been disposed of already. But that was a minor problem when compared with the installation of the gas line.
The plumber they used for our work was not professional. We already had a gas line in our basement that had been run to a gas dryer, but that we were no longer using, so with our approval The Stove Shop?s plumber pulled it out, rerouted it through our basement, and connected a new run of gas line from the other end of the existing line to our fireplace. Our installation was done on a Tuesday morning and when we went into the basement Tuesday night there was a strong odor of gas and we contacted the gas company. We also noted that the pilot lights had not been relit for our furnace and water heater. The gas company?s plumber tested the newly installed line and found that the line was clearly leaking at the connector The Stove Shop?s plumber had installed to connect our existing gas line to the new gas line. The gas company?s plumber noted that the existing gas line and the new gas line were two different types of gas line and that such a connection would likely leak. The gas company?s plumber shut off the gas to our house to stop the leak. The next morning we contacted a plumber to fix the leak and he replaced the existing gas line with a new line of the same type The Stove Shop?s plumber had installed. We were in contact with Bill at The Stove Shop and he spoke with our plumber and arranged that a bill would be sent to The Stove Shop directly.
On Saturday we found that the installer had not been able to locate the removable plate for the gas line run in our fireplace insert and so cut a hole in the metal of the insert. The installer was aware that there was access to that part of our fireplace through our basement, since we were having work done on our chimney at the time, and had we known there was an issue locating the plate we would have reached up to find the plate on the insert ourselves. We found the cut metal when additional work was done on our chimney, and it appears that our fireplace insert would need to be replaced if our fireplace were to be used as a wood-burning fireplace again.
On Sunday we noticed that some of our household vents weren?t getting any air flowing through them, so we looked at the ducts in our basement. We found that two of our ducts had been knocked off of the vents and were blowing air into the basement instead of up into the house. These two ducts were on either side of where the existing gas line had been disconnected so it could be rerouted. We believe that the plumber knocked out the ducts when rerouting the existing gas line. We reinstalled the ducts and restored the air flow to our vents.
We contacted The Stove Shop regarding these issues and they refunded us $200, which was half of the delivery and install fee (not including the fee for running the gas line itself). I would never have a gas line run by The Stove Shop again, as it would have been cheaper and more professional to have a gas line run by a plumber I selected. I would purchase products from The Stove Shop, but I would prefer to install them myself and save the delivery and installation fee.
