They should returned phone calls. They should also have fixed dates on which they come. It was hard reaching them and getting appointments. Usually it was the owner that came out and he was fine once he got here.

Terrible. First they started a week late. Then they discovered the joists and the sheathing were rotted and needed replaced. I asked and asked but never received a quote for the extra work. I even went to their office and they just lied and said they didn't have the numbers. Then they billed my for $15,52( for a no. That was supposed to cost $5900 and they provided no backup. They also drove my tenant crazy with their dirt and dust and missing dates and foul language.

I had some shingles and flashing blow off in a storm.  I called Murphy Roofing as I had used them in the past.  Bill Murphy came out the next day to look at the damage.  I told him I had a contract on my house and needed the work done ASAP.  He took the flashing and shingles to best match new shingle colors.  He didn't come back the next day b/c there was another storm, but he finished up the work the following day.  So, a very quick turnaround time.  Bill also helped me knock down a wasp's nest while he was there, it was in a tree in my front yard.  He did this just to be nice.  So, overall, great experience.  His rates were reasonable considering the other estimates I received.

March 2015:  the water marks have reappeared.  My sister called another roofer because she has lost all confidence in Murphy Roofing.  This is the inspection report from the second roofer:

    Re: Roof Inspection Report

My inspection to the above mentioned property on March 18, 2015 revealed brown water stains to the interior ceiling of the living room & bedroom.  Upon further inspection on the roof I found a modified rubber roof in newer looking condition and did not have any apparent openings that would allow water penetration that would cause the staining to the ceiling.

Next I cut a 3ft. square core sample of the modified rubber and discovered moisture between the rubber roof and the plywood.

Next I cut open the plywood and found what I believe to be the root cause of the problem.  Which is over insulation

stuffed between the roof joists all the way up to the interior side of the plywood not allowing any movement of air between the insulation & plywood.

This is causing the roof to sweat & to condensate to the interior ceilings, which in turn is the cause of the brown water stains.

It is my professional opinion that the contractor who installed your new plywood & new rubber roof should not have covered over the incorrect oversized insulation.  They should have told you of the situation & corrected it prior to installing new plywood & new roof.

I?m sorry to inform you that because of the above mentioned situation all roofing material, all plywood & all insulation must be removed since it is soaked with condensation moisture.  If left as is will cause mold to form.

To correct the problem is going to cost another $13,400.00.

March 2014

It is  now over two years since the work was completed.  Since then the ceilings are showing water marks and the skylight is leaking.  My sister called another Angies List roofer who said after inspecting the roof that Murphy Roofing removed the roof vent and did not replace it!   Moisture caused the discoloration of the inside ceilings in the living room and my nephew's newly renovated bedroom.  Also, the skylight needs caulking.  Now my sister has the added expense of hiring a plasterer to repair the moisture-damaged ceilings and paying another roofer $320 to install the roof vent and caulk the skylight.

I just feel that for a job costing over $15,000 Murphy Roofing should have caught the fact the roof vent was missing and inspected the skylight for its proper installation and caulking.

As the work removing the old roof began, Bob Kyle took pictures and emailed them to me.  The pictures revealed the horrible condition of the roof.   Mr. Murphy called me at work to say not only was the plywood completely rotted out, but the joists supporting the roof were also rotted.  This meant the entire roof was in danger of collapsing!  He further explained the gutter, drip edge, etc. were rotted also.  In a nutshell the entire roof including the rafters needed to be replaced.  He said the additional work would cost an additional $5,300.

I had called at least five other roofers to fix this problem (I lost count). Some would schedule an appointment and not show up. Some would not call me back. Bill Murphy came out the day I called to look at the problem. He thought it was related to some flashing that was missing from the edge of the roof and said it would be a quick fix. It took them a few weeks and a couple of phone calls to fix the flashing. The problem existed after this and I discussed with Bill. I explained how I could dump a bucket of water onto the roof and after a minute or so the water was standing on the roof showing there was a clog. They came out a day or two after this call and removed the clog and applied new sealant around the downspout. The only problem I had with this were the few weeks I was waiting for the initial repair. I did not know when it was going to happen and I had to call a few times to get updates. Other than that, things went great. I don't know why it is so hard to find a good roofer in this area. I will be using Murphy Roofing for my future roofing needs.

Initially, their price was reasonable and they were friendly. We explained that we had 2 leaks and that since the roof was very old with many layers, we prefered to tear the whole thing off. They replaced the rood (there were a few additional charges for rotted decking - which were fair and expected). They did replace my drainage with gutters and eaves, HOWEVER, they left the holes in the eaves - where birds are now living. If that was the ONLY problem I'd be happy. The nightmare started when I ended up with 4 leaks in my house 1 year AFTER they replaced the roof. That's two more leaks than when I replaced the roof. We called numerous times to have them come out and fix my roof, at least 5 times in 4 months. They came out once, looked at the roof, said they be back. No one showed. We called again - they said they "forgot" what the problem was and sent someone ELSE out to look at the roof. They said they'd be back that day to fix the leaks. They didn't. After 3 more calls, they finally came out and fixed the roof by slapping a bunch of tar on it. Keep in mind, this is a shingle roof and flat roof with a gravel coating, so NEITHER need that as a repair - they took the lazy way out. Completely dissatisfied. Don't waste your money paying these guys. If you need them to fix anything afterwards, they'll just give you the run around.

The crew showed up on time and the price was fair. The work was done in a sloppy manner. The silver coating was splashed on to my porch and wall and skylight, the roof had areas that were not completely coated. They did return to correct these issues, but argued about it and behaved if it were unreasonabale request.
