I have used John in the past on 2 different homes in Chestnut Hill. His work was acceptable at the time. On this project, I asked John to sand, stain, and finish newly installed wide-plank white oak flooring (8? to 16? wide) on the first floor and some existing wide-plank long leaf pine on the 2nd floor. Needless to say, these floors were spectacular before he started. Well, he ruined them. His price was reasonable and he said he could do the job ??no problem?. I held back on submitting a report to Angie?s List because I was trying to recoup my cost/ money from John. To date he has refused to take my calls and has refused to refund the money I paid him. Below is a list of just some of the problems:
-Sanding machines dug long groves in almost all of the boards,
- His edging machine gouged the newly installed custom baseboard all around the rooms,
-Workmen spilled stain on a corner of a newly painted wall and tried to hide it,
-At the start of the job John agreed to sink all existing nails, in the end he said he wasn?t able to because the floor was too hard,
- Stain application was splotchy,
- John must use some type of sanding sealer and not oil based polyurethane as he said he would, less than 2 years of minimal use later, there are 2? X 2? areas of the floors are scuffed from the vacuum cleaner and all need refinishing. I think using the sanding sealed allows for a shorter amount of drying time between coats.
- Workmen regularly smoked outside the front door and left their cigarette butts on the ground,
You might ask why I paid him. Well, John did a good job in the past and I was in the middle of a major rehab on our house. Additionally, a lot of the problems did not present themselves immediately. I also believed john was a man of his word and would fix any issues in the future- well he didn?t and I paid the price. Also watch out for the sob story about his son and his surgeries. Sorry to have to tell it like it is, stay clear of John Wissinger Hard wood floors-he is only a shadow of his father in the business.
