The bad: After removing 2/3 of the old roof down to bare wood, we were told we needed to call the company owner. He tells us that we need to put down all new plywood decking at the cost quoted in the proposal for decking repairs - $3/sq ft, or $3,000 for the entire roof. Owner tells us that they will either walk off the job or will not warranty the roof if we do not agree to this. We had a bad feeling about the way this was presented, sp we pushed back. Asked why this possibility didn't come up earlier, or why a line item wasn't included in the bid (our roof/house was very typical in design and condition for the area), and whether this is truly necessary. Explain we feel like we are possibly being taken for a ride. Owner gets angry that we are questioning his integrity, yells at my wife, hangs up. Will not answer phone when we try to call back - multiple times. Discuss issue with crew foreman and ask if plywood is really needed- that we want a good quality roof, but had some sticker shock at the sudden cost increase and sales pressure. Foreman says it actually isn't necessary, that most of the decking is fine and that he can/will install roof with only limited repairs to a few areas. Points out problem spots (all look legit). Assures us that roof will be fine and Henkel will issue warranty (which they did).
Pleased with final product. Appreciated efforts of roofers who did the work. Unlikely to use Henkel again (unless roof leaks under warranty), and would recommend only with caution.
This STELLAR roofing company re-shingled all of my pent roofs, small side porch roof (which needed much attention-rotten wood, etc.) and because we were constantly experiencing a leak in a kitchen roof that has a sky-light, Henkel ripped it down to bare bones and reworked, re-shingled and re-flashed. All this rain we've been having of late? NOT one leak. Honestly, Paul Henkel (a nephew of the owner) came out and headed up his crew. Everyone was so professional, was ALWAYS on time, was kind to my two dogs, made SURE that all the old roofing nails were picked up.... I can't say enough good things about this fabulous, hard-working company. Let's face it, roofing in 90+degree weather is a real, you know what, and never, never did the crew complain. They always treated me with respect, and ergo, I did my best to treat them likewise (as we all should). I was very, very happy with the workmanship, the little extras, the kindness. If you're on the Mainline or in the South Philly area, you're losing out if you don't have Henkel Roofing come out to your job to give you an estimate. I'm very, very impressed, and my husband and I are beyond happy at the scope of their work.
I'm so very grateful I contracted with them.
I purchased my home based on an agreement with the sellers that the roof would be inspected for leaks and that it would be properly ventilated. The sellers hired Mr. Henkel's company who installed 2 new air vents and inspected the roof on 7/21/13 and provided a Roof Certification which states that the roof is "in satisfactory condition with no evidence of leaks" and that two new vents were installed in the roof. The certification also states that "all roofs have sound sheathing", however, the roof has been leaking on the same piece of wood as one of the vents that this company installed. I attempted to contact Mr. Henkel 4 times on 4 different days and was told by the woman in his office that he would return the calls, which he never did. When I finally got in touch with him on my fifth call to his office, he stated that he already sent someone to the home, while we were not there, and inspected the roof "from the outside" and that the roof is fine. I then requested that someone come out while I was home so I could show them the leak from inside the attic and he scheduled someone to come out on 10/2/13. He then called on 9/30/13 and said the person could not come out on the 2nd and could only come on the 1st although, again, no one would be home. Mr. Henkel again, said there is nothing wrong with the roof by visually inspecting it from the outside although there continues to be a puddle in the attic when it rains and the sheathing is wet and rotted.
I have now had a new, reputable roofer go on the roof and he was able to spot the issue immediately, something this company was unable (or unwilling) to do. This repair will now cost me $825.
This home was purchased on the contingency that the roof had no leaks and would be properly ventilated. I have a Roof Certification from this company dated July 21, 2013 (which is attached) stating that the roof is "in satisfactory condition with no evidence of leaks" and that they installed two new vents in the roof. The certification also states that "all roofs have sound sheathing", however, the sheathing where his vent is placed is rotted as well as in another area.
This home would not have been purchased if his certification did not state that the roof had no leaks and the sheathing was sound. It is obvious that this roofer did not properly inspect the sheathing from the inside or they would have seen the rotted wood and known there was an active leak. The new roofer said this is not a new leak and that Mr. Henkel should have seen it in July when he gave the Certification.
This was not a cost that I should have had to incur which is why it was in the purchase agreement that the roof be inspected for leaks. It was Mr. Henkel’s certification that caused us to proceed with the purchase of the home. And now we have the added expense of repairing the roof which we should have avoided by having Mr. Henkel inspect the roof prior to purchase.
Mr. Henkel has not been cooperative in this whole process and had an attitude when I spoke to him about.
I would have contracted them again to do roofing work, but threatening legal action when they are trying to charge me more than our agreed on work does not speak highly of Henkel.
"This is simply a case of someone not wanting to pay for work he agreed to. This customer was taken to municipal court in Phila. where he did not show and judgement was issued against him. All work was completed and the customer verbal told me he was completely satistified when the work was done."
"THIS MEMBER RECEIVED A COMPLETE GRANULATED MODIFIED BITUMEN ROOFING SYSTEM, AS PER OUR PROPOSAL. WE HAVE ASKED FOR HIS INSPECTION REPORT, BUT WE HAVE HAD NO RESPONSE. WE WOULD GLADLY MEET ANYONE ON THE JOB SITE FOR AN INSPECTION. OUR GOAL IS TO ENSURE CUSTOMER SATISFACTION."
