FreshDirect - Philadelphia

Ordering was easy on the website. We got to select a 2-hour time period in which the grocery items were to be delivered. We chose 10-noon. We saw a truck pull up about 9:45 and park in front of a neighbor's garage. My husband went out and told the delivery person he could do the delivery now. The gentleman was thankful, then he asked us where we wanted the food to be delivered. When we asked if he would deliver to the 2nd floor he gladly said yes. The truck is refrigerated. This is good, because we ordered multiple proteins: 2 lobsters, 2 steaks, and some chicken cutlets. They were all very fresh. Same for the veggies we ordered. We'll definitely order from Fresh Direct again!

Before you read any further, it's only fair to warn you that I never experienced the quality of Fresh Direct's food. This review is written based on customer service only. I ordered over $300 worth of groceries on Wednesday night, 4/24/13 (minus the $25 coupon for first time customers). The website is easy to navigate and very user friendly. The food is pricier than the local grocery store, but that's the price you pay for convenience. I chose Saturday delivery between 10am-12 noon. At 12:05, we still hadn't received our delivery, so I called customer service. The rep tried to contact the delivery driver, but she was unsuccessful and she said she'd call me back. At 12:49, I still hadn't heard from her, so I called back. This time the rep was able to reach the driver and told me that the groceries would be delivered before 3pm. WHAT?!!! She said that the driver got stuck in traffic and that she would credit the delivery charge. When I told the rep that we wouldn't be home at 3, she offered to leave the food out on my front step. Just what I want to come home to- slowly spoiling food left out in the hot sun to rot. I told her to just cancel the delivery and refund my money. My problem isn't that the driver was stuck in traffic - it is the complete lack of communication.The delivery team needs to keep better tabs on it's drivers and let the customer know if they are running late. First delivery from Fresh Direct: Delivery window 8-10a.m. Arrived 8:40a.m. Driver was very nice and took items into my kitchen. Expiration dates were all reasonable. Items were packed well to protect them. Temp of everything was 38.8 degrees F, which is perfect for refrigerator items. Of course, one would wish the tomatoes NOT be cold, as refrigeration makes them mealy and tasteless, but I understand that separating those out would be prohibitive (what? ask the driver to keep a stash of tomatoes and bananas in the cab?) On the other hand, if they are going to brag like crazy about babying my produce, they shouldn't be keeping tomatoes that cold. "Chicken thighs," shown in the photos on website with skin intact, came skinless. That's a problem. I emailed them about it. They responded in 2 hours and acknowledge the mistake, and promised to refund my charge for the chicken. I think this is a truly minimal remedy, as I am still without what I ordered and need to get it elsewhere. I'd have been happier with a free delivery of the right product. (I keep picturing a waiter bringing me the wrong meal, and when told of the mistake, saying, "Oh, sorry, I won't charge you for it," and leaving me with the mistaken meal. Not the right solution! He should replace it with what I ordered.) And of course, a discount coupon along with the apology would have been relationship-building. Not the end of the world, of course. But if one has to rely on the photos/descriptions to order the item online, seems like the photos/descriptions have got to be accurate for it all to work. The fresh herb bunches were excellent quality and simply enormous. That was a nice surprise. Overall produce quality was good... grapes, spinach, apples, celery all look good. I did end up with the wrong product on one item... my fault, not theirs, but there is a certain risk/expectation of that when one can't SEE what one is ordering. Thats one downside of online grocery shopping. On the other hand, I was able to inventory my pantry while I was shopping, and avoid buying unneeded items, which seems like a nice perk of doing it online. Prices seem roughly comparable to other places I shop. Overall, I wasn't wowed. But I'd consider using them, in a limited way, in the future.

Fresh Direct has a current special that they won't charge for delivery for new questions. You shop online for groceries and then they deliver it to your door, between 6:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. It was fairly easy to choose your groceries on the website. It saves your list and when you reorder, you can look at your list. I was able to get delivery from them the next day at 9:00 at night. They give a two hour window, when they're going to come during those two hours. They came within 30 minutes of my scheduled time. They were polite. They carried my case of water into the house. It doesn't get much better than that. The prices were actually were better than I thought they would be.
