Thank you again for a job well done!
I would like to express my appreciation to Ken from Clark's Contracting for doing a exceptional job attaching a drainage pipe that came loose in the back of my home near the roof top. Even with his very busy schedule he still came out to my home and did the job that was needed. Ken was very professional, prompt, courteous and really nice.
I was very impressed and will definitely be calling Ken for future remodeling jobs for my home. I will also recommend Ken to family and friends.
Each day, Ken would explain what he and his crew would be doing, and they would work tirelessly, sometimes until 8pm until that part of the job was complete. They would make sure our kitchen was usable the fridge was always plugged in, there was always temporary flooring put down, and the area was tarped off and vacuumed clean so that we could access our food but not fall through the joists or spread dust to the rest of our home. He and his crew are very family-friendly they always use clean language (important with two little ones around to hear and repeat everything!), they never yell, they do not play loud music, and they are always ready to help or explain anything they are doing. The job was exhausting and exhaustive (it included a good portion of our first floor kitchen, foyer, and main hallway), but Ken and his crew always kept their cool, even in the face of a few surprises.
They had to remove FOUR layers of flooring that had buckled over the years and buried our kitchen cabinet kickplates. They removed tile from the kitchen that was not adhered properly and tile from the foyer that was like concrete. They had to level several joists that had crowned and caused long speed bumps in our kitchen floor. They leveled my range and dishwasher after two years of making lopsided casseroles and long pancakes. They removed a part of a wall that stumped us after we demolished most of it ourselves. They removed a door and replaced it with a window so that it looks like it was there all along. All of these items we had discussed in advance, and Ken handled it in stride. On the second day, they discovered a hole in our foundation that was allowing rodents into the area under our kitchen. Eww!
Ken assessed the structural integrity of our house, installed a support joist, showed us how to fix the hole, and even showed up the next day with a bag of concrete and the willingness to brave the thorniest rose bushes to fix the problem. He insulated the space after determining that the existing insulation was completely inadequate, and as a result, we do not have any more mice, AND we have a MUCH warmer basement. This problem had been years in the making, probably passed through many contractors? hands, and it was Ken who found it and solved it.
When it came time to lay the tile, Ken discussed several different tile layouts, even measuring and laying them out for us to see, and we decided on a diagonal pattern that Ken warned us would involve a lot more time and cutting than we had originally planned. Undaunted, he laid them out so that the joints would line up perfectly down the perpendicular hallways, and we fell in love. It took Ken and his crew much more time (even a Saturday!) with our unexpectedly intricate design, but in the end the job looks amazing, and we enjoy showing it off to everyone who enters our home (how could they miss it?)
Just like with the bathroom he had done for us before this project, it feels like Ken just reads our minds for how the job should look, then he carries out the plans we had in mind. He is an excellent communicator, which is so important when it is a flooring design we will see every day for a very long time. We completely trust that if we hire Ken, the job will be to our expectations (even exceed them!) and that problems will be met and solved with minimal disruption. We are already planning to have Ken and his crew gut and remodel our other bathroom, and this time, we will be allowing him much of the creative control since he has proven once again that he has a passion for doing quality work with quality materials.
Ken called the night before work would begin to let us know what to expect, from the time he would be arriving to what he would be doing. True to his word, he and his guys (he employs his family members, who are also very skilled) arrived on time the first day and removed the tub, surround, and the entire floor in one day. They noticed that when we removed the toilet and vanity, there was mold on the wall from an old leak. Ken is also certified in mold removal and advised us to remove the wallboard to eliminate the musty smell and any dangerous mold. They did that the first day as well.
The next day, they sistered and fixed the crown in the joist and put down the plywood for the subfloor. After that, they put up and spackled the new drywall, using green-board to make it less likely to get moldy in the future. They put up the cement board and tiled the tub wall, working with my pattern and the very irregular-shaped tiles I had purchased, making the entire job smooth, even, and PERFECT. I didn't even have to ask Ken to make certain the also-irregular pattern in the tile would match up to avoid a dark and a light tile being next to each other -- Ken already saw the potential problem and worked very hard to correct the manufacturer's seeming flaws in the tile without being asked.
The next day, Ken and his team arrived early to put down the cement for the floor. He and I laid out my fairly intricate pattern ahead of time to make certain I was happy with the design, and he was very patient with my pattern and with me. He then prepped the surface, put down cement that was the consistency of Play-Doh, and put the tiles we had chosen directly into the wet cement. He grouted at the same time, explaining the benefits of a floor that is ALL ONE PIECE. It is PERFECTLY flat, the tiles are also PERFECTLY chosen and aligned, and we are THRILLED with the work. Ken and his team even returned the next day to make sure everything was drying properly and that the job met our expectations.
In all, Ken seems to be a "Jack of All Trades", but in all the areas we required his services, he and his team are masters of all of them. He is extremely patient and professional, explaining each day's work both the day before and the day of the work. He answered all the questions we had with detailed explanations that show he is passionate about his work AND about customer service. He and his guys are efficient and quiet in their work (that's important to a family with young children!), and they are CLEAN. Each day, it was just like you would see on TV: the floor disappeared, the floor reappeared, the tile appeared, etc. with NO MESS because Ken is meticulous in the way he left our home for us each night when he finished. They cleaned up the dust and debris before leaving each night to minimize the "construction feel" for our family. It is very hard to find such a skilled, pleasant, honest, and tidy contractor, and we are so happy to have found Ken! We have so much more work to do around our home, and we will be asking Ken to do ALL of the jobs!
