After a week they told me the remnant wouldn't work and I had to come back in to pick out another piece. That was totally fine. I come in again and this time work with the son, Dan. Turns out they had enough material all along. Frustrating, but also fine. We schedule the installation for a week out, which is pretty fast if you don't count the week I spent waiting to come back in unnecessarily. I was still happy to be getting a relatively inexpensive remnant. They were also very flexible and let me change the depth after the template, which I appreciated. Everything still ok.
Day of install, the backsplash is wrong. They terminated it at the stove and I had requested it be continuous and behind the stove. I made this request in my initial talk and drawings with Angelo, with Dan at the second visit and a third time with the template maker. Three requests, drawings submitted, dimensions given by me and three different people heard this request. Even though they had forgotten another piece of the backsplash and would have to return to finish the botched job, they literally would not leave without payment in full. (I don't blame them, that is what they are told to do and they were very, very nice guys.) Fine. I pay to the penny even with the mistake and the unfinished job. When I get Dan on the phone for an explanation I find that he is aggressive with me, will not admit their mistake, will not remedy it and would not apologize. Now I have to buy a $200 stainless backsplash piece to fix their error.
In the end, it's just a d*** counter, it's just a kitchen, it's just money, and mistake happen, but Dan's tone and dismissal of my concerns and complaints was even more upsetting than all of that. There was absolutely no apology and no discount whatsoever.
Dan's refusal to apologize or fix the error completely ruined what would have been an A+ experience (even with the backsplash error). An apology goes a long way to buying good will. And if you can't apologize, at least cover the costs that your customer has incurred; either of those remedies (and apology or covering my extra costs) would have garnered them an A+ review but instead they created a very unhappy customer.
"I remember this job quite well. My installer who also did the template suggested to the member To extend the countertops into 3 different window frames, because the height of the cabinets were 2" higher than the frame of the window. The customer had white carrara sills ( cracked). I agree that it was neccessary for the granite to extend into the frame of the window because otherwise it would have not looked finished. The kitchen was a massive L- shape and surrounded 3 windows. THE CUSTOMERS COMPLAINT WAS THAT THERE WAS AN 1/8" GAP IN BETWEEN THE WINDOW FRAME ON BOTH SIDES. This was a historical property in Mt. Airy. The historical society only allows you to put replacement windows in and thus not only was frame original, but it was out of square over 1/2". I believe it is common sense for someone to understand tolerances are needed in order ensure a proper installation. If you force the granite in it will break or damage. It took us 2 hours to remove tile countertop and did not expect to take us that long. We did apologize, but I stand by my work."
