.We had quite a few delays due to various circumstances---mostly weather,
unplanned hidden damage that needed repair, etc. So the project took
quite a while longer than expected. What impressed us is that Kurt never
took shortcuts or cut corners to get the work done more quickly. If you
want quality versus speed, this is your man. My husband & I are
sort of perfectionists and have not always been happy with other
contractors who were on a timeline to benefit them, but not necessarily
the quality of the job. He is very knowledgeable and does things the
right way. He is resourceful in addressing problem situations. He
explains what he is doing and why, answers questions, addresses concerns
and will make changes if requested. Kurt is very personable, easy to
talk to and returns phone calls. He is owner/builder, so there may be
times when he needs to do estimates, paperwork, procure supplies, etc.
that decrease the time he can be on site. For us, the craftsmanship and
thoroughness of his work was worth the wait.
"First of all…let me say that there was no “contract”. They purchased a coupon for 40 hours of general contracting work. Between travel time to pick up materials and time spent on this job, there was a total of 55 hours put into this job and I have the documentation to prove it. The extra I charged was only for 8 hours and I gave them a discounted rate on top of it. As far as the work that was done, we discussed what the priority areas were before I started and these were the areas I concentrated on. The plan was to get as much done as I could in the time that was purchased. The entire house was in various states of re construction. The dry wall was already hung and I was to finish. I needed to alter several areas due to unevenness and poor installation. There had been previous spackling done that was sub par and there were marks from old spackle already on the floor. As per our agreement, they were to prep the surrounding area to protect from dust and spackle and that was done with cardboard and plastic in several, but not all the areas. After every day, I scraped up any globs that were on areas not protected and wiped the residue with a wet rag. Patrick told me before I started that it didn’t have to be done all at the same time but I had said my schedule only permitted that I do it all in one shot. My truck broke down at lunch on one of the days and the only other day I missed, I told them I would not be there that day ahead of time. No matter what time I arrived, I always tried to give 8 hours for the day…if I didn’t on one day, I made it up. With all of the extra work I had to do, it was clear that it would extend past the coupon, so I abandoned the doorway trim I was going to do and concentrated on the spackling and sanding so they could paint. (Which was the priority to begin with…I suggested how to finish the door way and they liked the idea. I said it would be the last thing I would do.) I ran out of time and on the last day, twisted my knee trying to avoid stepping on the kitten that was constantly under my feet while I was on stilts the entire job. Hardly anything was said to me the entire time I was working. I constantly ask to find out if my customers are pleased or if there are problems…what we can do to rectify them. Other that, “it looks nice” I got nothing with the exception of an issue with the electrical not being hooked back up. I explained that I couldn’t put outlets and switches back onto wet spackle and everything was hooked up before I finished. At the end of the job, they said it looked good. I was also told not to worry about cleaning up too well because the cleaning lady was due in the next day. If they would have voiced these sentiments while the work was going on, I would have done what was necessary to fix it…nothing but, “it looks good” was said. Don’t understand this review."
Kurt made my house look like a brand-new house! My son was getting married in a month and I wanted it to look nice for the pictures as well as for all the people we were having over to our house. When my son came home (he's stationed in AZ), he just walked around amazed at how nice the house looked. He kept saying "Mom, if I didn't know any better, I would swear this is a brand-new house! Our family and friends also commented on the outstanding, professional job Kurt did. They looked over the walls and trim and said "He did a fantastic job!". He re-hung my traverse rods and all the blinds and curtain rods. All I had to do was hang the curtains!
Kurt was extremely easy to work with. He was very dependable and flexible (hubby and I have non-traditional jobs and work odd hours and days). He came on weekends to make sure the job got done on time. He was very meticulous and detail-oriented. He would re-do things if they were not to his expectations.
I will certainly hire Kurt again for anything I need around the house. He is not only a great painter, but he also has a lot of experience with general contracting. He is also a great person- very easy to talk to, and has many great suggestions to help any situation you may have with your house.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR- HIRE KURT- YOU WON'T BE SORRY!
Kurt was pleasant to work with and we would call on him again.
"We are truly sorry that this situation has occurred for all parties involved, and we are currently working towards a resolution. Please refer to the many other positive reviews we’ve received from happy Angie’s List customers to get an honest feel for our character and work ethic. We are proud to be an Angie’s List Super Service Award contractor."
Kurt did most of the painting with the dense water-tite paint, which was a huge job, and I helped as much as I could. Then he installed drywall along a wall that separated the main basement from the utility area, fitted doors in this wall to provide access, and even designed and created a small closet to hide the gas meter. The studs and some drywall were in place, but Kurt measured, fitted, patched, and sanded the new drywall so that it looks like one smooth wall ready for priming and painting.
Kurt even squeezed in a repair to a kitchen drawer that hadn't closed properly for a long time.
Kurt worked diligently and did a great job.
The work was all completed within a week, including caulking everything and interior trim replacement where needed. We had problems with leaking prior to having the windows replaced, but since the the new windows are in, insulated and caulked we've not had any problems with water finding it's way inside. Kurt was courteous and pleasant to have around, and was very conscientious of heat loss and dust and debris by taking the time to hang plastic barriers around each window area before he performed the work. This cut down on a lot of interior mess. When he was done he took the time to clean up, and even vacuumed the areas where he had been working.
When he was here working he was extremely industrious, not taking any breaks nor taking a lunch break. Several days he worked almost until dark in order to stay on schedule. We love our new windows, both how they look and how efficient they are, and will definitely have KJ Construction back when we have work to be done in the future.
"The Amount of time it took to to do the tub and paint was not at all excessive. The Tub was a remodel which consisted of: 1) Removing the existing tub/surround and disposing. 2) Prepping the walls to accept the new tub. 3) Reinforcing the sub floor, 4) Re plumbing the waste and supply, both of which were not accessible once the new tub was installed. 5) installing the new tub and surround. 6) installing the finish plumbing. 7) clean up. Also worth mentioning, is the fact that the bathroom was on the second floor and all cutting and most of the preparation was done outside the first floor. The ceiling was a 2 story foyer that required scaffolding and included caulking in the crown moulding against the ceiling and wall, and touching up the moulding/ walls where the previous painter slopped them up. Sufficient drying time for caulk and different colored paint was needed, as well as time climbing and moving scaffold. I am meticulous in my work and care of my tools, and work the same whether I am working with a contract or Time and material basis. I cannot be liable for time tables not discussed ahead of time."
