Squires Painting had been recommended to me by a friend who had used their services commercially. This is a family operated business and his father has passed on the business to the son. I was given a verbal estimate from the owner's son and should have seen this as a "red flag".
Mr. Squires [the son] was punctual and his price was below all other written estimates I had received. However, when he came to do the work he only did half the area as he had promised and would not grade a low area as he had indicated in his verbal estimate. Also, there were areas of the old asphalt showing under the seal coat. He promised that he would come back and re-touch the area when it had time to "cure". Before he left, I asked him to sign an invoice to show that he had been paid for the service. He seemed "insulted". Without that handwritten invoice, I would have had no way to prove that he did the work.
Although I have tried to reach Mr. Squires regarding the holes and places that were not covered during the seal coat more than a dozen times, he has not responded. My driveway looks awful. Although most of the driveways were redone at the same time, mine stands out as it looks because it was done so poorly. Mine is a sharp contrast to my next door neighbor's driveway that was sealcoated at the same time by a different contractor.
I've learned a tough lesson - always get a written estimate before the work begins.
