Internet Service, TV Service - Cable
For Cable service: At $60/month, the cable is what you expect. Overpriced, but Service Electric holds a monopoly on cable televison service in the Sunbury area. The cable pack is average, nothing exceptional, though it was extremely reliable. We recently had the cable TV service cut, as it was far too expensive.
For the High Speed Internet service: At $45/month, the Platinum High Speed Internet service itself is very reliable and fast. I have had very few problems with service outages. The only problem I have with their service, and the reason for the low overall quality rating, is their monthly broadband usage caps. They are ridiculously low, and make streaming video a headache.
The Bandwidth Cap limits you to 100 GB of download traffic during peak usage hours (5 pm to 1am), with unlimited usage during off hours. This service is adequate for someone living alone, but for a house with multiple TVs and children watching TV, it's impossible. Forget about streaming HD, you will quickly eat up your bandwidth unless you time your watching for offpeak hours. Forget multiple set-top boxes, as you will use appx 50 GB of peak hour bandwidth for normal usage of standard- or low-quality streaming.
Service Electric needs to raise their bandwidth caps to a more reasonable level. They only have two levels of cable-modem-only service available. If you want more than their Platinum service, which is very reasonable except for the bandwidth caps, they will push you over to their Wideband 50 (50 Mbit down/ 5 Mbit up) service, which is $110 and has a bandwidth download cap of 200 GB. There's no happy medium. Their Platinum Plus plan (20 Mbit down/5 Mbit up, same ridiculous 100 GB cap) isn't available for Internet-only.
If I had an option, I wouldn't go with Service Electric for broadband unless they raised their bandwidth cap, but there is no option in the area. I must say their cable television service is decent, and the broadband is reliable and fast with no serious connection issues.
They need to raise the bandwidth caps. They're relying on the monopoly, since there is no Verizon FiOS or even DSL available in Northumberland at my address. Once there's more competition, things might change.
