My initial contact with the company was through a telephone call with Mr. Al Cherry, who is the grandfather of James Cherry, and a certified arborist in his own right. Al Cherry was one of the founders of the arborist certification program, and remains actively involved in the certification process. Mr. Al Cherry is also the same "Al Cherry" listed in this same category on Angieslist.com. I made an appointment for Mr. Al Cherry to visit he site and assess the situation. He arrived promptly and I was immediately impressed with his knowledge and professionalism. In addition to detailed and thorough understanding of the trees on the property, Mr. Cherry was able to immediately ascertain their condition, and recommend any actions needed to take proper corrective action to ensure the health and beauty of the trees, or in one case, suggest that a large mature Ash tree was unfortunately irreparably infested with the endemic Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) beetle and would likely need to be removed. One key aspect of Mr. Cherry's evaluation was that his perspective was not focused on tree cutting; rather, it was focused on establishing and maintaining the health of the plants within their environment on the site. This difference demonstrated Mr. Cherry's professionalism and character. Based upon Mr. Cherry's analysis, I made a contract for the services of James Cherry Tree Service to perform needed maintenance trimming on mature Magnolia, Maple, and Fringe trees, removal of the large EAB-infested Ash tree, and some ancillary trimming of some shrubbery on the site. The Ash removal was to include the removal of the leftover tree stump. Mr. James Cherry and four of his employees arrived promptly at 8:00 AM on the day of the appointment, and immediately set to work. All work was performed completely to my satisfaction, and I was impressed by the professional craftsmanship of Mr. Cherry and his team. I have had tree work done before on these same trees, and never has it been done with as much professional attention to detail. Whereas others had just "cut wood", Mr. Cherry's team professionally addressed the needs of the trees and completed their tasks in a straightforward, craftsman-like manner. I observed the activities throughout the period, and was continually impressed with their performance. Work by Mr. Cherry and his team was completed by 3:30 PM, and included the cleanup of all debris, and removal of all cuttings except the large logs from the Ash tree. Mr. Cherry arranged for those logs to be picked up later the same afternoon, and planned to return the next day to perform the stump removal work. The next day was a very rainy day, and I was surprised when Mr. Cherry and his foreman arrived at my house. They set to work in a driving rain to grind up the stump. They removed most of the chippings from the stump and thoroughly raked and cleaned up the area. After finishing their work and reviewing suggestions fo the stump removal area, they inspected the property to ensure that no debris or contractor tools remained. It was the most positive and professional job I have ever seen. If you want tree service performed the way it should be done, I most highly recommend James Cherry Tree Service, Inc.

The service was really good, and they left the area very good. They took away everything, and did what they said they would. They were very knowledgeable, and there were 4 guys working here and they were very considerate, and very professional. I would recommend them.

Jim came out to see the job, was quick and polite, and provided us with the best price of the 4 estimates we got (1/3 of Clauser Tree Service's estimate!!). We called to schedule it a few days later. Everything was set up. The day of, I put a call into Jim when he was a bit tardy to make sure I had my days straight. He was wrestling with a chipper that was out of commission... totally understandable... He was hoping to get it running quickly. He got back to me shortly thereafter. The chipper was completely out of order and was being towed to a shop for repairs that would take several days.
Because our tree overhung several parking spots for a church adjacent to our property, and they had been kind enough to close parking spots off (a foresight of Jim's), we didn't want to repay their cooperation with a second day of inconvenience. So, despite the broken chipper, the monkey wrench in his entire day, and the day growing late, Jim came out and took the tree down. He was quick and efficient. His partner neatly stacked the wood for later removal. And his acrobatics were enjoyed by us and our neighbors! He was apologetic for the inconvenience of the project being broken in two, and he was understanding to our not wanting to inconvenience the church. He also declined our offer for partial payment, saying he would get paid when the job was done.
He returned a few days later, as he had promised, with the chipper. He and his team cleared the yard (gathering up logs my pre-schooler had rolled in every direction). They were quick, thorough, and clean... raking up small branches, blowing off my walkways and the driveway area where they had chipped, and so forth. Then Jim removed the three stumps. He leveled out the grindings, filled in the holes, cleaned up the mess, and left the yard beautiful.
He was courteous and on-task, professional and skilled. He also beat every competitors' price. We couldn't have asked for a better service or experience. Now, all he has to do it update his Angie's List profile so he is getting the credit for and quot;Phil's Tree Service.and quot; Thanks for a great job, James Cherry Tree Service!!

I called on Monday. He stopped on Tuesday. They took down my 2 dead trees on Wednesday. Precarious situation. The trees were just off my driveway, situated between the service line for my house and the neighbors. One tree had already begun to fall. They did the job the old fashion way. They scaled the trees (Yikes!) and took them down, very carefully, piece by piece.I have a fireplace, a chipper and a log splitter, so I only asked that the trees be brought down for safety. (looking for a break on price as well) They did as I asked. So I am happy customer.

I had gotten three other proposals--and Phils Tree Service (aka James Cherry Tree Service) was the best price (the others were anywhere from $50-$300 more). The main reason I went with these guys was that the guy who came out to give the estimate was also the and quot;climberand quot; (i.e. he was going to be doing a lot of the work). I like paying money to directly to the workers--rather than paying some manger-type who shows up in the morning, drops off a bunch of migrant worker types, then comes back later to collect a check.

The guy who gave the estimate was knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. Gave a fair estimate that same day (about 4 days after I originally called him--which was quick). When I accepted the proposal they were at my house within the week and spent two days cutting down the trees and cleaning up. Everything went well, and it looks great. On the first day of work I asked if I could get a few more small trees cut down. I expected to pay another few hundred dollars for this--but they did it for free. Very impresses and pleased.

I would highly recommend this company, and will use them again.

Called Phil and got Jim Cherry. I was expecting this based on another poster. Jim said they would be out to give us a quote and I explained that since I work in the city, I was giving him permission to go on the property without me. We received a quote for $295. My husband balked at first, until he realized it was for FOUR trees plus grinding. The trees weren't large, but still, they would take work. I called Jim and accepted the quote. Again, told him no hurry--anytime in the next couple of weeks was fine. Jim said the would come out early the following week. At that time, I also asked if while they were out to remove these trees, if he could give me a quote for cleaning up our redbud in the front. We came home early the following week to find the trees gone. It was like they had never been there. Jim even ground up another stump and pruned my redbud. I was thrilled. When he called to follow-up, I asked how much extra I owed for the redbud and he told me nothing, that it didn't take long and they were already here. This was more than expected as I tend to be cynical in the situations. I would definitely hire Jim again for any tree work.

I called Phil for an estimate and scheduled a meet. The guy who came out was Jim, and he said Phil's tree service and his company, James Cherry Tree Service and Landscaping, are merging. Jim met me at 6 on a workday, so I didn't have to leave early. We spent some time discussing the challenges of my yard with the overhead lines and close fences. Jim provided a written estimate on the spot for the removal, hauling away, and stump grinding of both trees. A few days later I called to schedule them to do the work. Again, Jim was flexible so I could pick my day to stay home for the work. It was only 1 week later.

The guys arrived at 8 as promised, and got set up to start work right away. I was amazed at how fast they surgically took apart the maple. They were conscious of all the overhead lines and how to drop the wood without hitting them. The pine came down with the same care. There were four guys working as the heat broiled slowly up to 98 degrees. The stump grinder showed up a little before noon and drove the remote controlled grinder to the back yard to take care of the large stumps. I'm not sure if he was a sub-contractor, and I didn't ask. He did all that Jim asked him to and quickly. What a cool piece of machinery.

The work was done by 12:30, which allowed me to get out of there and to work so I didn't lose a full day's pay myself. I think they did a great job. I think they worked fast to try and beat the most brutal of the heat. It helped that I had a cooler of iced water and sports drinks for them. It was the least I could do.

If I had to complain about anything at all, there would be two small things: first, the weight of the wood falling did leave some gopher holes I'll have to fill in later. It was just the luck of the wood falling so that it landed on end and poked a hole. The second thing was some scratching to my driveway. I recently had the driveway recoated, so dragging the branches across to get to the chipper caused some scratching. Jim pointed this out to me before he started, and there was no way to avoid it. No harm was done other than cosmetic. If I had planned this better, I would have coated after the work was done. No fault of them, and I was quite glad he told me before doing it.

Phil was awesome. I found him on Angie's List and he definitely lived up to his high score! I called-- he called me back. He came out and gave me an estimate (very reasonable!) and when it rained the day he was due to begin, he called to reschedule! He removed several large shrubs (junipers, and other big stuff we couldn't dig out ourselves!) and elevated our maple trees so we could walk / mow under them. He also gave us some really good advice and education about trees in general. We are very pleased with Phil's Tree Service and would definitely hire him again.

Phil did excellent work. He respected the trees. I wanted him to prune them but he explained why they needed to come out. He explained the trees behind these dying ones would now get light and grow and he was exactly right. The price was so good. There was a tree right on the property line and she explained the process to her and she agreed to split the price of that tree with us.

Phil returned my call within the hour, and met with me 2 days later to discuss the work. He quoted me a price for the work that was half the price of the nearest quote. He then offered to remove some mulberry saplings that would be a problem in just a few years. He did that no charge, but wrote it in the quote so it would be sure to get done. Each item was itemized in the initial quote; the total was $825, $750 if I got it all done (in 1 day). I decided later to keep about 6 feet of the silver maple for a tree carving. He discounted an additional $50 the day he did the work because he did not grind that stump.

We were extremely pleased at Phil's level of knowledge and professionalism start to finish. He was very thorough in assessing the health/condition of each of our trees, and in his recommendations. We had gotten estimates from 4 other top rated companies in Angie's List, and none of the other companies displayed the amount of knowledge as Phil's Tree Service. Phil's quote was also by far the most competitive and reasonable. We were able to schedule the work within a week or so (we were not in a rush), and the workmen showed up promptly at agreed upon start time. They were busy for most of the day, and we were very impressed with the work they did, and their superb job cleaning up! In the past few years we have had several companies trim or remove trees, and none of their work came close to the quality job that was done by Phil's. We would highly recommend anyone looking to for tree care to at least call for an estimate. We will definitely be using their services again.

Everything went extremely well. The crew was punctual, professional, and efficient. The owner had to address a neighbor complaint at the start of the job and handled it in a thoroughly professional manner. The job was completed quickly and our property was left cleaned of all debris. We couldn't be happier with the work.

Phil and his team were very professional. They finished the job efficiently and did a very thorough job. Since three of the trees they removed were very large and old, the mulch from the stumps piled up quickly (I asked them to leave the mulch) and it was hard to see if they'd gotten everything, so Phil said he'd come back at no cost if there was anything left of the stumps once I removed the mulch. I didn't get rid of all of the mulch for a year, and despite the late re-call he still offered to come out and get rid of the few roots and stump fragments that were left, at no cost.
