They did a terrible job. The wrong size drywall was used and I was blamed for not telling them what size to use! The installer showed up, measured the area, drove to Home Depot, came back with drywall, installed it and left. I contacted Dominic and asked that he come out and inspect, since it was obvious to me that it was all wrong. After months of back and forth, he finally just blamed me for not telling them to use 1/2 instead of 5/8’s. How can this be? It is THEIR job to know what to use. It is so badly done that there is a huge gap in the drywall. Don’t use these crooks. They stole my money and will steal yours too if you use them.

I would not use Spartan Drywall again and I can't recommend them to others. Spartan Drywall lacks attention to detail on many levels. The quality of the job is only fair and requires a lot of touch up. It was not paint ready as described in the contract. The corners were and quot;lightand quot;, they were only lightly mudded or were over sanded. There are extremely obvious air bubble voids, mushrooms, exposed tape and rough areas throughout the entire job. Spartan Drywall seemed much more interested in getting the final payment then completing a quality job. They showed up at 3:30 PM on the final day (a Friday) demanding access based on the contract, yet they brought no supplies to do any touch up work and had not removed any of the debris or left over supplies from the site.
There were also a number of non-finish related things about the job that shows a lack of attention to detail or care:
- Spartan Drywall ordered or accepted for delivery the wrong thickness drywall for the walls
- Spartan Drywall hung the drywall in places in the wrong orientation, despite having the specific conversation with the owner and foreman right before beginning the job.
- Spartan Drywall, at times, seemed unprepared for the job they were being asked to do
- Spartan Drywall communication leaves a lot to be desired
I asked Spartan back once to fix the quality problems. They returned when requested and spent time at the site. However, the shear volume of problems remaining when they left shows that they are uninterested in doing a quality finish job. Overall it was not a good experience at all.

Generally went well. Did not put up enough plastic to keep plaster dust out of the rest of the house. Came back promptly to fix any voids in mudding.

Keep in mind that I was promised a job that was and quot;paint- ready.and quot; Things actually started out pretty
good with this contractor. . However, things went downhill after a couple of days. . The workers
seemed to be on the ball until the owner Dominic left the country during the job. While he had a
supervisor to look over things, the and quot;subcontractorsand quot; who showed up
weren't sure what they were doing every day. I felt like I was
supervising them, While I paid for a COMPLETE drywall job, I had to constantly
explain the scope of work to them. For example, they were about to start
drywalling, when I explained that the scope of work called for one of
the walls to be framed with insulation. This wasn't done, and since their
carpenter was working on a large job in Center City, they had to quickly
figure out how to frame and insulate the wall. Part of the problem was that
subcontractors were brought in after Spartan Drywall found a large
commercial job in Center City. My job was an afterthought to them, and
the new guys who were brought in had no real supervision on the job, other than me
watching over them!
The subcontractors were real friendly/nice guys, however
they were very messy, didn't put plastic down unless asked, and
tended to track dust around the house. The biggest problem was
that things were being communicated to them. generally, the communication
skills of the workers was lacking (particularly with the owner Dominic as
well). For example, I told them from the start to remove ALL paneling.
This was a simple instruction, however they decided to drywall over
paneling in several spots, and when I inspected it, I had to correct
them, which meant going back and removing the paneling and therefore
creating more dust and debris.
As they were finishing up the job,
it became obvious they were looking to move on to their larger Center
City job. From the start, I had instructed the owner as well as the carpenter to reuse
my expensive original wood trim after installing the drywall. This was
made clear to them on MULTIPLE occasions. However, as things were
wrapping up, I realized that the trim was thrown away by one of their
workers, and all the supervisor could do was blame my wife (who was
eight months pregnant at the time) and excuse her of throwing it away!
Since they threw away the wood trim, I was stuck with wood trim that
looked cheap and unprofessional. And I never received an apology!!!!
After coming home that day, I
inspected their work, to find that the drywall job looked poorly done.
For example, there was seams showing in the ceiling, multiple areas that
had to be patched and sanded, and multiple areas that resembled nothing more than a poor
patch job. At the $7500 price point, I wasn't too impressed to say the
least. Despite, the subpar work, I paid these guys the final payment,
minus $200 for the ten hours it took me to sand and spackle the drwyall.
I explained that I was deducting $200 for all the work that I did to
fix THEIR mistakes. I felt that I was being overly generous, however, I
felt that I would simply move on with my life. Now its Several weeks later, AND two
of the doors that they installed aren't opening or closing properly.
Also, one of the doors wasn't cut high enough to accommodate the carpeting
that I told them I was going to install (so I can't use that door at all!)
The doors seemed ok a couple weeks ago, but it appears they shifted due to
improper installation. I asked the owner to come back and fix the work
that he did. I told him its unacceptable to me to pay $7500 for work,
and have doors that won't open and close properly!!! I was wiling to let
the drywall problems go, but I drew my line at the doors that don't
work!!! I politely asked Dominic to come back and honor his six month
warranty (that was in writing). He told me that because I withheld $200
from him, that he will under no circumstances fix the problem since I
didn't pay them their final $200!!!! HE TOLD ME and quot;THAT BECAUSE HE HAS AN
and quot;Aand quot; RATING ON ANGIES LIST
THAT MY NEGATIVE REVIEW WOULD BE MEANINGLESS. NOW I QUESTION, WHETHER THE OTHER REVIEWS ARE IN FACT REAL!
**KEEP IN MIND * If Dominic had agreed to fix the drywall mistakes when I
spoke to him last week, I would have gladly gaven him the $200. However,
when I informed him of the problems, he wasn't interested in coming back
to fix them. It said and quot;its too late for me to come back, and quot; since I tried
to paint over HIS mistakes!!!!
Now I'm stuck with doors that need to
be repaired. Yes---I will ultimately fix them myself. The work
was clearly beyond the capacity of Spartan Drywall. I WILL BE FILING A
COMPLAINT WITH THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU, and unfortunately I will be
filing a lawsuit in small claims court to address these issues. If
Dominic was a responsible businessman, he would address my
concerns/improper work that was done. Instead he wants to be a problem
contractor. AGAIN, AT THIS PRICE POINT (MORE THAN $7,000) CUSTOMER
SATISFACTION SHOULD BE SPARTAN DRYWALL'S FIRST PRIORITY. I WASN'T
PAYING FOR A MINOR DRYWALL PATCH JOB, AND CLEARLY THEY WEREN'T UP TO THE
CHALLENGE OF DOING THIS CALIBER OF WORK.

UPDATE (6/3/2013): In response to the response below from the contractor: All I hear from them are excuses. If you read their responses to other complaints, making excuses seems to be a normal pattern for them. As for me supposedly and quot;installing hardwood floorsand quot; that is either pure fabrication on their part or they need to take a course on LISTENING asap. As for not making final payment, as I mentioned above, They are lucky that I only witheld $200 on a $7000 job!!!! While this contractor might be suited to handle minor drywall repair patch jobs, I would stay far away if you are looking for anything more substantial!!!!

"Dear Member, As a highly rated service provider on Angies-list, we are very disappointed in hearing that one of our customers are unsatisfied with the service we have provided. In response to your complaint and unresolved issues, it is Spartan Drywall incs. policy, that when we don't receive payment in full on completion of all contracted work, that our warranties are void. As per your own statement in your review, when we left your house on the last day all the doors were operating fine. What you fail to mention is that all the doors are rubbing because you installed carpets and not laminate as you originally planned. At this point [member name removed], due to our experience, and the contractors you hired on this projects experience working with you, we are unable to return to your house to perform additional work. to satisfy your demands. Spartan Drywall strives to keep clients happy and recommending us to their friends and family. Unfortunately we got the feeling working with you, that your were looking for reasons not to pay the balance for any reason possible.(even prior to any issues with doors) Spartan Drywall will stand by our reputation as a quality service provider and continue to build good relationships with home owners through out the Delaware Valley Thank You"

Dominick came out to give a estimate. The price seemed fair and he was professional and easy to get along with. The work was completed in a quick manner in good quality. Time was important.
A few issues came up a few days after the job was completed. It took Dominick some time to return my phone calls and schedule when to fix the issues. But the work was eventually completed and the issues resolved. He must have been extra busy.
If it didn't take so long to resolve the minor issues I would've given Dominick all and quot;Aand quot;'s. Spartan Drywall is a good company that does good work. I would recommend them and I would use them again. Just be sure to inspect the work closely (as you should do with any contractor) before final payment is given. Otherwise - it might be some time before you get the issue resolved. Thank you for doing a good job.

I manage several rental properties. I needed a drywall contractor to replace a ceiling that had been destroyed by a previous tenant in Warminster. I first called 2 other contractors, one I found on Craig's List and another from the Phone book. The Craigslist guy NEVER showed despite 2 missed and quot;start datesand quot; and a sob story about some unnamed family emergency.. The second guy (phone book) gave me a very high estimate for the job over the phone (!) and then didn't even bother to show up when scheduled. Then I finally got through to Dominic, the owner-operator at Spartan Drywall.

He was courteous, professional, and unlike the and quot;no-showsand quot;, this is a young man who is professional and wants to grow his business through good work for a reasonable price and a good reputation(!!) . When I told him how 2 previous contractors had bailed on me, he said. and quot;Don't worry.I will meet you there tomorrow myself and it will be done in a couple of days.and quot; ( I had a tenant coming, and the property would not pass inspection without the dryall repairs). Just as promised the Job was done with excellence, right on time for a reasonable price and I couldn't be happier with my experience working with Spartan Drywall. I highly recommend Spartan Drywall and you can bet I have saved their Phone number for the next time I need drywall repairs done on time, within budget by a skilled and friendly professional crew!!

This is the second time we've had Spartan back to help with a basement remodel. The work, responsiveness, and pressional nature of the company was so superb initially with drywalling the basement, we asked them to come back and help with framing a bar, knocking out a wall and redoing a stairwell, and framing around basement support poles. The company was extremely prompt responding with phone call and text throughout the process. Their ideas for parts of our project helped us see and understand what only a contractor could see. Projects were finished quickly and exceeded our expectations. There was one area I was unhappy with the look. The company was out the next morning to fix and appease my concern. After the projects were completed, trash removal and cleaning met my expectations. We were recommended this company from a friend who was thrilled with their work. After our experience with Spartan, I would have no reservations recommending this company.
I can not speak to pricing of the project as we were thrilled with the craftmanship and glowing reviews of our friend. Thus we did not and quot;shop aroundand quot; other than having one other quote. I believe you get what you pay for.

Spartan Drywall and Acoustics, Dominic and his crew, did a great job in painting, repairing drywall and installing new hardwood floors in my home. They were thorough in explaining the job required and had a high quality of work. They were excellent in following through with subsequence touch up even one year later with touch up and painting. I highly recommend Dominic and Spartan Drywall, for any painting, drywall or flooring jobs.

I would strongly recommend you stay far away from this contractor. Dominic does not stand behind his work and acts as if he is doing you a favor instead of his job for which he is getting paid. During the estimate process, he was very professional, seemed knowledgeable and accommodating. All of that changed once we signed on the dotted line and work began. And then several months later when the tape started coming up and the ceilings cracked again and looked just as they did before the work was done, it took Dominic weeks before he came to look at the damage and tell me that it wasn't his fault. And this was after missing 3 scheduled appointments and not bothering to call and tell me he wasn't coming. His workers were very careless. They damaged furniture and seemed not to be very sorry about it. When I noticed the damage (in the middle of the job), they bought some putty, put it in multiple gashes, and told me it looked fine now. One guy would throw his key ring of 20 keys onto my expensive and well cared for bedroom dresser, scratching the finish. When I asked him to not do this, he said he just hadn't been thinking about it. Point is, if you have valuable furniture, you can't expect his team to take care of it. Many of our hallway walls had to be repainted (that had not been previously damaged) because they were damaged during the work as they knocked ladders and equipment into them walking between rooms. Dominic seemed annoyed that he had to fix this damage, although it was clearly his team's fault. Also, during the estimate process, Dominic seemed to be very understanding of the fact that we had an infant in the house and that this was going to be disruptive to our family and that I would need to know when they would be starting work and about when they would wrap up each day so that I could make arrangements. They showed up late each day with a different excuse like car trouble, would disappear for hours to get paint or to go to a "meeting at the office". Dominic had also overextended himself on the project and it ended up wasting a lot of time. The guy that was doing the drywall would have to sit and wait for long stretches for someone to come and spot him on ladders or to help him move equipment. So instead of the work taking a few days as promised, it dragged on because the job had not been organized well and there seemed to be no accountability to the schedule that Dominic had agreed to beforehand. Finally the job was done and we were happy it was over. But a few months later, we noticed cracking in the same places that he had “fixed”. We called Dominic to come look at the cracks. I scheduled 3 different appointments with him, 2 of which he simply didn't show up for and didn't call to cancel, and one he canceled an hour beforehand. He didn't even return my calls or emails to see where he was and why he hadn't shown up. Then about 3 weeks after I contacted him to tell him about the problem, he showed up on my doorstep unannounced and said he could look at the ceilings right then. I think this was highly unprofessional but since I happened to be at home and I worried he wouldn't come out again, I let him in and showed him the problem. He dismissed the reoccurrence of the cracks and said it was a result of "settling" and this kind of thing happened in old buildings. But it looked exactly like it did when I showed him the initial damage to repair and he never used the word settling or mentioned that it was going to happen again a few months after he did the work. Obviously given this information, I would not have chosen to spend the money or deal with the disturbance to our lives if the problem wasn't going to be solved. All in all, he took no responsibility after he was paid. Finally, as I was walking him out of the apartment, he had the nerve to tell me that he was upset that he had tried his best and I hadn't told him he'd done a good job on the last day. I was pretty shocked. I am not his mother and it is not my job to make him feel appreciated. I explained that sometimes doing your best doesn't mean you actually did a good job. What's ridiculous though is that he was looking for a thank you or appreciation after I had just showed him that the ceilings and walls looked terrible and he wasn't taking any responsibility. What exactly should I be appreciating?? I am sure there are more professional and qualified contractors out there.
Response from Spartan Drywall LLC
"Mrs Member, As you stated in your lengthy report, the cracks your speak of happened more then 6 months after we completed the job. As the contract with the condo ass. said, 6 month warranty. We regret not being able to make Mrs member satisfied as we completed the job in 3 days to meet her demanding schedule of going to the park and going out to lunch. Out of all 6 units completed in the building we our proud to say we have 5 happy customers including your neighbors. We are not sure as to what you refer saying the work dragged on as we completed exactly when we said we would (3 days) and was in our contract. We sincerely wish you luck in future dealing with contractors as you seem to apparently not find any that meet your standards. sincerely, Owner"

He worked fast but is careless. For example, seam plaster was dropped all over the floor, furniture and appliances were damaged. I would not recommend him.
Response from Spartan Drywall LLC
"Member, We are very dissapointed not being able to satisfied with our work. As to remodeling standards sometimes when finishers are applying the spackle on the seams some drops to the floor. On bare concrete floors it is not uncommon to simply clean up the mess when work has been completed as we did. As to our contract you signed it stated that during the work being performed there will be some un-avoidable mess created. That is why we took the precaution of covering all your furniture in the OTHER room with plastic, plus during the really messy sanding process we built a barrier from floor to cieling with plastic. We're sorry we heard back that at the end of the job after you checked and approved the work you felt we finished too fast and we're relucted to pay our final draw. We regret that you we're unsatisfied with our performance. Spartan Drywall tries very hard to keep our clients happy. Feel free to contact us with any comments. Best regards Member, Spartan Drywall llc."

Their price was excellent, but I wasn’t satisfied with the job. They came everyday, and they were punctual. I was just disappointed with the quality of the work that I got and it kind of put me off. I would not use them in the future and would not recommend them to anyone else.

"Dear Member, Sorry to hear that your were not happy with our drywall work. As we stated before we concluded our contract, We highly recomend you hire someone to finish installing your doors and your trim in your house. I know you had stated during the job about the "Gaps" in the drywall where it meets the floor is unacceptable, but as to standard building procedure, base board trim is installed and casing and doors are hung in a house before moving in. We are sorry you felt our trim price was to expensive and hope you finished your house like we suggested. Best of luck to you Member. Regards, Spartan Drywall Dominic Truelove"

Dominic of Spartan Drywall helped me out with a complete rehab of my primary residence in the Northern Liberties area. The project started off badly (before I brought Dom on). I had to fire the original contractor which I hired due to the fact he was inexperienced, and dragged his feet. Dom was the complete opposite -I originally called him up to just remove the lath+plaster from my property (because the other contractor didn't want to do it). Within 24 hours of my initial phone call every inch of plaster was out of the house. Within another 24 hours I decided to give the entire project to Dom because of his clearly superior knowledge and work ethic. The rest is history - I am now living in the house and couldn't be happier. The best part of working with Dom was that every time I called he picked up. Whenever I needed something he helped me out ( A couple of times I needed a ride to my mechanic). Shoot me an email if you have any questions about Dominic and spartan drywall, I will be happy to tell you about my experience. - Jared ([email protected])

Owner came on the day of my call to provide estimate. His price was several hundred dollars lower than any other estimates I received, plus he was able to do the work in my timeframe which was a short urnaround due to putting my house on the market. He provided a written estimate and called me at each step of the way to inform me about the work that would be done and what I could expect. He even helped me return a carpet remnant that I decided not to use, since I didn't have a truck or van. He went out of his way to help and was a pleasure to work with. The work was completed on time and I was very pleased with the end result. It looks fantastic and will definitely help to sell my home with a newly remodelled basement.

Dom is very easy to work with. He came out and surveyed the job and worked up a price on the spot. We actually started the work before the holidays. He was very accomodating of the fact that we had to delay completion until after the holidays because we had family visiting. He and his crew arrived on time, worked all day and cleaned up at each day's end. The did excellent quality work. We are looking forward to our next project with them.
