The DeFrehn Corp

About us

The DeFrehn Corporation was started in 1974 by Jeffrey DeFrehn on nights and weekends as a part time job. The company progressed steadily until it required Jeffrey's full attention in 1978. His skills improved until he was able to tackle larger and more complicated projects. The company's commitment to the best possible quality has remained and resulted in the installation of every type of roof. Many of these roofs can easily be expected to last 100 years. The DeFrehn Corporation has successfully installed well over four million square feet of flat roofing. The company has also installed slate, lead, copper, tin, cedar, and every type of asphalt shingle to thousands of homes. For the past thirty-eight years, almost every customer could be used as a reference. Jeffrey and his son share the responsibilities of running the company including daily inspection of work in progress and keeping customers satisfied. The work is done. It's great. He came out when he said he'd come out. What I really liked about him,I had 3 different bids. The first guy who came out said I needed to replace my entire roof. And he never even went up on the roof. This guy came out and said it wasn't a roof problem but a gutter problem. The gutters were overflowing and some needed to be replaced. The third guy also told me it was a gutter problem. DeFrahn was better priced than the third guy.

We needed to have our cedar roof replaced. This is a very expensive proposition, so I got estimates from four roofing companies.Hard-working crew and very clean (the site was cleaned at the end of each day). All in all, I was very pleased with the entire experience.

Everything went as planned. All promises made by DeFrehn were kept. All services listed on the estimate were completed right on time as scheduled. They did everything they said they would do. They are very friendly, knowledgeable, were very easy to work with. They took the stress out of an otherwise very stressful situation. The guy who came out to do the estimate stuck with us throughout the entire job and was always available to contact by cell phone. Halfway through the job, the company founder Jeff DeFrehn, Sr. himself came to check out the work personally and ask us if we are satisfied with how things are going. The finished product is a masterpiece. Better than expected. All issues were addressed. All repairs were made. Nothing left behind. They cleaned up everything. 100% satisfied. 100% recommendation. I was there to watch it all happen.

The DeFrehn Corp installed a new 6,000 square foot roof on our one-story house over a two-day period. Communication with the company concerning the impending startup was good, The dumpster arrived on November 29, as promised, and precisely on time on the morning of November 30, the large crew arrived. They started in vigorously after some introductions and a promise to be finished sometime on December1st. The exact time being dependent on how many roof boards they might have to replace. As it turned out, 11 boards needed replacement and the crew also cleaned our skylights and rehung some Christmas lights, both without charge. They worked diligently until dusk on Saturday, December 1st, leaving the property with a handsome new roof and no evidence that anyone had been there, except for the dumpster, which disappeared the next week.

This type of work requires a company with special knowledge as it isn't as simple asphalt shingle jobs. Jeff DeFrehn was a pleasure to work with. He is honest and tells you pros and cons of different options. He even has pictures of the spots that need to be repaired. He also goes through the process with you thoroughly. We are slow to have work done on our house because we hate dealing with vendors who are unrealiable or not totally honest. When they missed a spot, they returned and fixed it and he called back to apologize. Happy to say that Jeff is completely honest and his employees' work was excellent quality. Old fashioned guy with old fashioned honesty.

DeFrehn Co was professional, responsive, reasonably priced, and very communicative through the process. They even went beyond traditional services to assist in a zoning approval at no additional cost.

The experience was fine overall. I think their price was fair for the work. It was incredibly slow getting them out to my home. I had to make weekly phone calls to them to try to get worked into their schedule, but once they started the work, everything went well.

My experience with DeFrehn was positive from start to finish. Jeff came out within a few days of our call to give us an estimate. We had four companies in to give us quotes and their advice ranged from and quot;patch the leaky areaand quot; (about $3000) to and quot;rip up and repair the whole thingand quot; (about $16000). Even though Jeff recommended a more expensive fix than two of the other companies, we went with DeFrehn because they obviously knew what they were talking about. We knew that the cheaper bids would just put a band-aid on a major problem.

After signing our contract, DeFrehn took care of everything else. They applied for a permit right away and within a week they were here working. They arrived early and worked very, very hard all day. The workers they use took great care to cover all our landscaping (thank you!!) and they worked carefully around our gutters that were just replaced a few years ago. Also, they cleaned up meticulously after each day they worked here. I expected that they would tidy up, but I saw several men crouching down inspecting all our mulched areas for scraps of old roof material. What attention to detail!

It took DeFrehn one day to rip up all our old shingles and put down new ones and a second day to take apart and repair our flat roof. This is exactly what Jeff told us when he gave us our estimate.

Every time we had a question and left a message, we got a prompt return call within a few business hours.

The finished roof looks wonderful. I would eagerly recommend The DeFrehn Corp to anyone who needs a good, quality fix. Thank you to all the people working in their office, all the very hard workers who preformed the repairs, and to Jeff and Jeff, Jr for a job well done.

Jeff (president) came out promptly and returned the quote on the same day... on the installtion date everyone arrived promptly and worked from 7:30am until dark and the work was completed in one day, with the dumpster being removed the next day... they replaced multiple sheets of plywood, capped, collared, flashed, etc.... even replaced, painted and capped rotten trim work on the upper story of our home. They also replaced some damaged rafters and magnetized the lawn.

We orginally expected the job to be scheduled about 2 weeks from acceptance, but the owner's son called a day later and asked if we would be open to having our roof installed the next day. We were delighted and said yes. So we recieved a great roof, with
lifetime shinges, and a 10 year labor warranty from the company.

On arrival the boom operator drop a pallet of shingles on my mailbox. Defrehn promptly replaced the box with whatever color I requested, and also replaced the address numbers on the box, free of charge of course.

Overall, we are extremely satisfied with their work and professionalism, and would definitely use them again.

The slates on the roof of our 165-year-old farmhouse started falling off seriously as a result of the severe weather last winter, to the point where birds were nesting in holes in the slate and, once the weather warmed up, anyone spending time on the deck below in even a mild breeze was in mortal danger of having his or her head split open.

We contacted a number of companies through Angie's List. Jeff DeFrehn, his company's founder and president, seemed most knowledgeable about slate roofs, and about what we needed to have done, whether we wanted simply a patch-up job or a completely new roof. We knew we would need a new roof eventually, pricey as that might be, so we decided that now was as good a time as any.

We'd started interviewing roofers back in April but it wasn't until early this month, July 2011, that we got all of our ducks in a row, including a work permit, a go-ahead from our insurance company, and a final estimate from DeFrehn (ancient furring would no longer satisfy new township regulations so that would have to be replaced by plywood sheets for an additional several thousand dollars).

Though we'd been forewarned that there might be anywhere from a six to eight week wait for the slate once it was ordered, Jeff and his two sons, David and Jeff, Jr., managed to locate a supplier who had the quantity we required, and no sooner was the contract signed than they picked up the shipment.

The materials were delivered and parked in our driveway on Monday and Tuesday, July 11th and 12th. At 6.30 am, Wednesday, July 13th, a large crew of at least ten arrived and immediately got to work setting up, pulling down and rebuilding. It made for a noisy day, since there was inevitably a lot of hammering to be done and the crashing of old, ripped slate on to a tarp several stories below, but the work was also done smoothly and efficiently. The crew was indefatigable, still hard at work when it began to get dark around 8 that evening.

My partner and I were obliged to be away from the house for several days starting early Thursday morning. We didn't return until Saturday, the 16th, driving onto our grounds as the last DeFrehn truck was driving out. By that time, everything was finished, and the outside of the house and all the grounds were spotless, with the deck furniture replaced in its original position. All the construction work had been completed the day before, we were told by neighbors, but the workers had returned that morning to do a final clean-up, and drive away all the trailers with their materials, leaving only a large dumpster of garbage behind. That dumpster disappeared on Monday, and it was as if the house had never been disturbed, except that we had a perfect new slate roof and beautiful copper flashings, all of which are the envy of the neighborhood.

The DeFrehn people even did us a favor by relocating, at no additional cost, a satellite dish that had been mounted on the front porch several weeks earlier. We had hated its original placement, where it stood out like a sore thumb, and had scheduled the satellite company to change the placement on Monday, the 18th (for an additional cost). On the rooftop, Defrehn placed the satellite in a much more discreet area beside a chimney, and even filled in the holes the original satellite installer had made in the porch roof. When he came on Monday, all the satellite guy had to do was hook up a few wires.

Jeff and his sons, David and Jeff, Jr., as well as all their workers, were as polite and helpful as anyone could ever ask from true professionals. We don't look forward to reroofing our house in this lifetime, but if we were going to do it, they'd be the people we'd choose for the job.

Workers -- a fleet of them -- started early and worked late. Very professional, from estimating to completion (only 2 1/2 days vs. a 2 week+ estimate from a higher-priced competitor), including top-notch clean-up and trash removal. Cost effective family operation, which is friendly, cooperative and appears quite frank and honest as well.

When we noticed our roof leak in the garage area (due to an ice dam), we called Mr. Defreyn and he came out the same day. He gave some advice about fixing our problem and we asked for an estimate for a whole roof. We accepted his estimate and then waited until the snow had melted enough to replace the roof. On the appointed day, the work crew arrived at 8am and set to work immediately. There were eight men and they were well organized and hard-working. They completed the entire job by 6 pm! We appreciated their attention to the environment (the tarps) and to our windows! They cleaned up all the debris and magnetized the yard. Mr. Defreyn was generous enough to let our builder dispose of his debris in the dumpster that had been brought in for the roof. Apparently, this is rarely the case and our builder really appreciated it, as did we.

Jeff Defrehn came to the house himself and gave my neighbor and I a quote. He was extremly friendly and becasue we both did the roofs at the same time we got a little bit of a discount. The workers started promptly at 7:30 and finished the same day around 4:30. They did a great job and I woud use them again. I do not have any negative reports about the company or the workmanship. It was amazing to see them clean up after the job was done. They literially walked around with a magnet over my lawn to make sure they got all the roofing nails. They were professional all the way around. Hightly recommended.

The entire project and workmanship was outstanding. The owner, Jeff DeFrehn, came out and assessed the job and provided a detailed estimate the next day. It beat the other three estimates by at least $5,000.00 ! ! !. I signed and faxed the approval and the job was scheduled within the week. The crew showed up on time, overseen by Jeff, Jr.. He introduced me to the head of the crew and we walked around and discussed the work to be done. I was stunned and skeptical to hear that they would finish that day. By the time I got home from work the job was done; everything was immaculately cleaned up and the crew was gone. The roof looked beautiful and the only evidence of the work was the dumpster in the driveway which was scheduled to be removed the next day. I couldn't have been happier. The only difference in the estimate was for the plywood which was an itemized extra. I have the highest regard for this company and their work.

Defrehn Roofing got the job, and I couldn't be happier. His men (all eight of them,) were at my house at the prescribed time. I was amazed at how professional they were. Everyone knew exactly what his job was. It took 2 days to do the job. Even my neighbors were impressed. One day after the job was finished, Jeff was at my house, walking on the roof, around the roof, looking at from every angle. What I learned from Jeff is that it has to be right the first time. That's his reputation. I have since learned that that he has done over 4000 roofs in the years he has been in business.

I called DeFrehn after another contractor did not perform the work promised in a timely manner, canceling twice. We had a temporary fix, but it could begin leaking at any time and winter was coming. I explained the problem and Mr DeFrehn had guys out to look at it within 24 hours. They were terrific, they even took me up on the roof to explain what they recommended we do to fix the problem. Mr. DeFrehn does a lot of corporate work, but said he would squeeze us in between jobs sometime within the next two weeks. True to his word, he did. The guys were polite, professional and efficient. They went above and beyond, even coating my chimney cap with rubber coating since they noticed it was starting to rust. It's been a year and we have had no problems whatsoever. They were a little more expensive than some of the other estimates I got, but they were worth every penny. Quality is always worth it.

It took a couple phone calls to get an estimate and again to get a data for the actual work, but they came when they said they would. They were the lower of two bids but explained the work they would do to my satisfaction. They ended up doing extra work to make sure the sides were done well, but did not charge extra. The leak is sealed. They even took digital photos and sent me copies with the bill. I am very pleased with the job, especially since my experience with roofers in the past has been poor. I recommend this company.
