The DeFrehn Corp
About us
The DeFrehn Corporation was started in 1974 by Jeffrey DeFrehn on nights and weekends as a part time job. The company progressed steadily until it required Jeffrey's full attention in 1978. His skills improved until he was able to tackle larger and more complicated projects. The company's commitment to the best possible quality has remained and resulted in the installation of every type of roof. Many of these roofs can easily be expected to last 100 years. The DeFrehn Corporation has successfully installed well over four million square feet of flat roofing. The company has also installed slate, lead, copper, tin, cedar, and every type of asphalt shingle to thousands of homes. For the past thirty-eight years, almost every customer could be used as a reference. Jeffrey and his son share the responsibilities of running the company including daily inspection of work in progress and keeping customers satisfied. After signing our contract, DeFrehn took care of everything else. They applied for a permit right away and within a week they were here working. They arrived early and worked very, very hard all day. The workers they use took great care to cover all our landscaping (thank you!!) and they worked carefully around our gutters that were just replaced a few years ago. Also, they cleaned up meticulously after each day they worked here. I expected that they would tidy up, but I saw several men crouching down inspecting all our mulched areas for scraps of old roof material. What attention to detail!
It took DeFrehn one day to rip up all our old shingles and put down new ones and a second day to take apart and repair our flat roof. This is exactly what Jeff told us when he gave us our estimate.
Every time we had a question and left a message, we got a prompt return call within a few business hours.
The finished roof looks wonderful. I would eagerly recommend The DeFrehn Corp to anyone who needs a good, quality fix. Thank you to all the people working in their office, all the very hard workers who preformed the repairs, and to Jeff and Jeff, Jr for a job well done.
We orginally expected the job to be scheduled about 2 weeks from acceptance, but the owner's son called a day later and asked if we would be open to having our roof installed the next day. We were delighted and said yes. So we recieved a great roof, with
lifetime shinges, and a 10 year labor warranty from the company.
On arrival the boom operator drop a pallet of shingles on my mailbox. Defrehn promptly replaced the box with whatever color I requested, and also replaced the address numbers on the box, free of charge of course.
Overall, we are extremely satisfied with their work and professionalism, and would definitely use them again.
We contacted a number of companies through Angie's List. Jeff DeFrehn, his company's founder and president, seemed most knowledgeable about slate roofs, and about what we needed to have done, whether we wanted simply a patch-up job or a completely new roof. We knew we would need a new roof eventually, pricey as that might be, so we decided that now was as good a time as any.
We'd started interviewing roofers back in April but it wasn't until early this month, July 2011, that we got all of our ducks in a row, including a work permit, a go-ahead from our insurance company, and a final estimate from DeFrehn (ancient furring would no longer satisfy new township regulations so that would have to be replaced by plywood sheets for an additional several thousand dollars).
Though we'd been forewarned that there might be anywhere from a six to eight week wait for the slate once it was ordered, Jeff and his two sons, David and Jeff, Jr., managed to locate a supplier who had the quantity we required, and no sooner was the contract signed than they picked up the shipment.
The materials were delivered and parked in our driveway on Monday and Tuesday, July 11th and 12th. At 6.30 am, Wednesday, July 13th, a large crew of at least ten arrived and immediately got to work setting up, pulling down and rebuilding. It made for a noisy day, since there was inevitably a lot of hammering to be done and the crashing of old, ripped slate on to a tarp several stories below, but the work was also done smoothly and efficiently. The crew was indefatigable, still hard at work when it began to get dark around 8 that evening.
My partner and I were obliged to be away from the house for several days starting early Thursday morning. We didn't return until Saturday, the 16th, driving onto our grounds as the last DeFrehn truck was driving out. By that time, everything was finished, and the outside of the house and all the grounds were spotless, with the deck furniture replaced in its original position. All the construction work had been completed the day before, we were told by neighbors, but the workers had returned that morning to do a final clean-up, and drive away all the trailers with their materials, leaving only a large dumpster of garbage behind. That dumpster disappeared on Monday, and it was as if the house had never been disturbed, except that we had a perfect new slate roof and beautiful copper flashings, all of which are the envy of the neighborhood.
The DeFrehn people even did us a favor by relocating, at no additional cost, a satellite dish that had been mounted on the front porch several weeks earlier. We had hated its original placement, where it stood out like a sore thumb, and had scheduled the satellite company to change the placement on Monday, the 18th (for an additional cost). On the rooftop, Defrehn placed the satellite in a much more discreet area beside a chimney, and even filled in the holes the original satellite installer had made in the porch roof. When he came on Monday, all the satellite guy had to do was hook up a few wires.
Jeff and his sons, David and Jeff, Jr., as well as all their workers, were as polite and helpful as anyone could ever ask from true professionals. We don't look forward to reroofing our house in this lifetime, but if we were going to do it, they'd be the people we'd choose for the job.
