"I have never responded to a review but this needs clarification. This review was written more than 3 years after the project was completed. This company did not perform any work in 2018 as this review states. Actually April of 2015 was when the work was completed. The provocation for the review is the fact I was unable to fit the second phase into my schedule. I have copies of all email communications including one from April 21, 2017 which you say how much people like the job and how nice it will be to have the second part done. You mention damaged areas but never stated they were there 2 years prior when we actually did the job. You just asked for my opinion on how you could address them. The following is our documented communication from that date. On Friday, April 21, 2017 5:55 PM, Hi [Member Name Removed] Glad to hear things are going well and you're moving forward as planned. I definitely look forward to working with you again. I can meet with you now or we can wait till after Labor Day your call. Regards Dean Sent from my iPhone Personal email addresses have been removed. To:you Details Thanks, Dean. Let's meet now ("now" being whenever you're in my area and can squeeze in a quick visit . . . no big rush, of course, given that it'll be after Labor Day when this job will be done). For full disclosure, here's the skinny on why I'm moving now for a Sept. completion of Phase 2: -- I'm pushing to complete the remodeling overhaul of my house by this autumn b/c I want to host the [Member Information Removed]. Carolina branch of my family for T-giving. I thought I'd finish in '16, but after doing the upstairs bathrooms in the spring I was remodeled-out and needed a break. Frankly, this stuff is a pain in the a**. -- I'm getting a new kitchen in June, and I plan to tear out the living room wall-to-wall carpet when the dumpster is here so I can do it in one shot rather than piecemealing it b/c I can fit only so much of that stuff at a time in my trash cans. -- As mentioned, I wanted to catch you before the summer when you're focused on the gym floors, and I'm aiming to do some traveling later in the summer, and possibly again later in the autumn, so that's why I'm reaching out now so I can get on the docket for sometime in September. Also, there are a couple of slighlty damaged areas on the floors to be re-done, so I'd like to get your opinion on how I can address them before you do your work. People dig the look of the floors in the rooms completed in Phase 1, so it'll be nice when everything is done after Phase 2. --[Member Name Removed]"
At first we were told this was normal with red oak floors, but after he came back to inspect the job he recommended that the floors be redone repeating the original process of sanding to bare wood. I'm not sure if he had seen the finished floors before we complained, the two times we came out while the job was getting done, he was not here but his employees were. They started almost immediately on re-sanding, staining and finishing all the floors.
After the second time, the floors were worse. Some of the waviness was better (but not gone), but it was obvious that they rushed through the job and did not do it the same way they had before.
Some of the issues the second time:
- The floors were sanded very unevenly. Our hardwoods had grooves between the boards, in some areas they were sanded flat removing the grooves, in other areas you could clearly see the grooves that appeared even darker due to multiple coats of stain.
- There was a lot of debris stuck throughout the finish
- The stain did not appear to be applied evenly, there were areas near the wall where the color was different
- The color was different (lighter) than the first time
- There are areas that appeared to have no finish at all, just raw wood exposed, this was supposed to be after 3 coats of finish were applied
- There are visible sander marks throughout the house
- There are places that are rough to the touch
- They did not remove the appliances to finish behind them as agreed and as the color is different it is now very obvious
They came back a 3rd time and said the remaining issues were an easy fix. Unfortunately, they were unable to resolve the remaining issues and in one area even made it even worse again leaving visible paintbrush marks where they tried to apply the finish by hand. At this point we were beyond stressed and disappointed so we decided to move on. After 2 sandings a lot of life had been taken off the floors. He offered us a discount and we took it. When we decide to get the floors fixed, we are now faced with a bill larger than the original estimate.
