We spent many hours going over the job and the previous problems. Greg was confident in his criticisms of the previous contractor, and in his solutions for doing the job right. I agreed to his verbal quote of $12,900. When the day came to deliver the contract, he showed up with a sloppy handwritten stock form which included much, but not all, of the work. Greg explained that he just wasn't very good with computers or writing contracts, but that he was anal about his work and stood behind it. Aftter the time and effort getting to that point, and considering that none of the dozen or so contractors I interviewed had a contract that met the requirements of the new PA Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act, I took the chance that Greg would live up to his word. Unfortunately, I was wrong, again. In the end, Greg justified his changes by saying "Do we have a contract? No." They were here for 4 weeks. First, Greg skimped on the moisture barrier. Instead of redoing the Tyvek, he left the prior contractor's material up, said he would complete and tape seams as needed. He substituted a cheaper product and would only tape when I made an issue of it, and did a sloppy job at that. Many areas that should have caulk have none. Gutters were removed and rehung and now leak, some are missing. They also did not wrap and flash window openings as agreed until I caught them not doing so. He had said he was going to mortar/point and flash the chimney where there was a gap between the chimney and siding, but instead put what he called a "drip edge" over the gap. When I asked why he would make such an change without telling me, Greg said "My dad said to do it that way". He was also to flash where brick and siding meet on the front of the house, but did not, instead just installing channel. When I noticed they had not replaced the dryer vent when siding that area, Greg said it was just an oversight, then said the couldn't disconnect it from the duct. His solution was to cut open the wall in my laundry room, no drape, covering my washer/dryer and other items in debris and a new $400 headache. And, they were slobs. They tore off stucco, left it in my shrubs and hedges for several weeks, eventually leaving it for me. His dad and his brother, who were unregistered subcontractors by the the way, left hundreds of cigarette butts and empty packs on the ground. I supplied them with bottled water, and dozens of bottles were strewn everywhere. When the time came to part ways because Greg refused to do what he said he would do, his brother started yelling and calling me a scumbag, and I had to call 911 to get him to leave my property. I lived up to my end of the bargain, made payment as agreed, even accelerated a payment when he needed more money for materials. In fact, he left without leaving behind all the materials I had paid for. I offered to settle privately. Greg ignored that offer. So we are filing with the Atty General under the new law.
