General Remodeling
My experience with Tony Kalada General Contracting was not a good one. I found them to be slow, undependable, disorganized and either unable or unwilling to communicate clearly.
My house is about 80 years old and Tony convinced me that new construction windows would provide more window pane size and allow in more light than replacement windows and the cost of installation would be ?about the same?. I was unfamiliar with the differences between the two and trusted Tony, so I agreed to his recommendation. Tony measured and ordered the 13 windows from Harvey Building Products.
I did most of the demolition myself and prepared the existing window frames for the new windows. It was my understanding that the new windows would be installed into them. Tony said he had ordered standard sized windows and I assumed he ordered the standard size that would fit the existing rough opening.
The windows were delivered to my home and sat in my living room almost 3 weeks before they came back to begin the installation. After the first window was installed, Tony told me the cost of the installation had increased from $50 to $60 per window to $125 to $160 per window. Additional lumber and labor was now required. His explanation was because the house is old and crooked.
I paid $3,500 plus for the windows and gave the Kaladas $500 for material. They installed 4 windows and partially installed a 5th in 7 weeks and told me they needed money for material before they could install another window. I requested a list so I could purchase the material myself. I priced out the material from their list to finish the remaining 9 windows and the total was less than $500. I did not understand why the cost of material for 4 ½ windows was more than the cost of material for the remaining 9 windows. .
After 2 ½ months into the project and only 4 windows completed, I asked for the opinion of 2 other contractors. Both had basically the same reaction. Neither could understand why new construction windows were ordered for this job rather than replacement windows. They also both identified that the windows were oversized. The windows Tony had ordered were 1" too wide and 3 1/2" too long for the rough opening (that was sturdy and in good condition). A new frame now needs to be built to accommodate each new window.
I requested a meeting with Tony and Ramona. They left equipment behind my house and I made it safe and secure until they came back to discuss this issue. In a phone conversation, Tony had agreed to sign a release when he came to pick up his equipment. I requested that they bring my receipts with them as well.
They arrived at my home with the Police to recover the property they accused me of stealing. I have not yet received a record of accounting for the window project. The one document that I did get was merely a quote from Harvey Building Products, not an actual invoice. I called Harvey Building Products, but they do not do any business with the homeowner. I could not exchange or return the oversized windows. I could not even get a copy of my invoice.
I terminated my relationship Tony Kalada General Contracting and hired a new contractor to finish the job. It became evident that Tony?s technique required more lumber than was actually necessary.
The new contractor also identified an issue with the partially installed window. A new frame was built by Tony, the window was nailed and screwed into place, but the window was not square. It needed to be taken out and reinstalled.
The cost of the window installation is 3 times more than it needed to be and what could have been done in a week has taken several months.
