It went very well.  Gene and assistant showed up when promised and completed work when promised.  They did an excellent job.

We had water-damaged plaster on the ceiling in the living room. About an 8' x 8' piece of ceiling needed to be replaced. Mr. Lakin professionally removed the damaged plaster right down to the original lathe of our over 100 year old house. Taking into consideration of our household furnishings, he covered and taped up everything so that the dust and debris was minimal. After replacing the plaster, Mr. Lakin professionally matched the rest of the ceiling which had been done in a swirl pattern. The swirl pattern he made matched the rest of the ceiling perfectly.

Not only were we impressed with the professional job Mr. Lakin performed, we were also delighted that he came to do the work when he said he would and he finished in a very timely manner. Mr. Lakin responded to our email quickly and came for an inspection of the work to be done and with an estimate for the job a day after contact. After the appointment was made and a time set up, he was very punctual on each of the days he worked.

I found Gene Lakin on Angie's List and he replied to my inquiry about a price quote on the same day. When he came to our home to do the estimate, it turned out that my father in law was Gene's football coach in elementary and middle school! Upon doing the assessment of the damage, we determined that we had a and quot;double ceilingand quot; in our bedroom -- meaning that the original construction had a plaster ceiling which had drywall hung over it. Gene expressed concern about repairing the drywall without having the area tested for mold since there was probably standing water in between the two ceilings. He advocated for mold remediation with our insurance company and they agreed. He truly went to bat for us! He attended the initial inspection with the mold company as well, removed a small piece of the drywalled ceiling and, in fact, there was mold. Gene visited two days after the mold issue was addressed and gave a final estimate. We scheduled him to begin working the next day. He and a helper did the bulk of the work on Wednesday and finished the job on Thursday and Friday. The ceiling is seamless, the drywall was done without a flaw, the other room he worked on is in great shape as well. I would highly recommend him.

In addition, Gene goes above and beyond his craft. He offered to bring back lunch from a local eatery when he went to eat, always answered my calls and emails promptly, and was very friendly. He was a pleasure to work with, and we paid for his expertise with no reservations.

We first called Gene when we were investigating plaster experts for a restoration project. We paid for an estimate on the project, which Gene credited back to us once we hired him. When we called him in to do this project, he asked us detailed questions about what we wanted to accomplish, and selected the best materials for our needs. We wanted to be able to paint the walls as soon as possible because of other work we had contracted for the project, and Gene explained how long to wait before painting and also how to test the moisture content of the patch. Some contractors are annoyed when the homeowner asks a lot of questions, but Gene seemed to be happy to provide the detailed information I was looking for. I recommend his work, and I plan to invite him back to do more projects in my home.

Gene was great. He is very polite and pleasant to work with. He always called back when he said he would, and showed up to do the work right on schedule. The quality of his work was perfect, and the price was right too. Couldn't ask for anything more.
