During the installation, the deck contractor had to point out to the concrete crew them several design points for pouring the footers, and needed to be very clear about the sloping of the concrete pad. These were pretty significant details, including how deep to pour the footings to eliminate shifting, and then how much slope to ensure the proper drainage. and I assumed the crew would be more knowledgeable.
We are now four years later and a large section of the exposed aggregate is flaking off. It is beginning to look like 40 year old, rather than 4 year old, concrete. Someone from the company came out and blamed it on rock salt and refused to do anything. Even after pointing out that the concrete pad that I replaced - mind you, 25 years old at least - looked far better and endured far more weather than this new pad. Over the course of four years, I might have used ice melt 5 times.
In my opinion, concrete should be much more durable. I also think the company should stand behind its product. Do not use this company. It may look nice once they finish the job, but I doubt it will be durable. At least based on my experience.
"We got a call from [removed member name] asking us to look at a portion of his front concrete entrance that we installed 4 years ago. When I arrived I noticed the spalling concrete and a five gallon bucket of rock salt. I tried to explain the effects rock salt has on concrete, and the numerous times we had snow this year. He said he only used rock salt 4 or 5 times this year. I responded that it only takes one time, but he didn't want to hear any explanations. I don't understand how he can expect me to replace the concrete when he directly caused the problem."
The crew that excavated the entire backyard worked quickly and were very respectful. We never had one issue or problem. We were told it would take about two weeks but really thought with all the work they had to do it would take longer. It was a pleasant surprise when they finished a day early and there was even rain day. Our backyard went from being over grown with weeds and dirt to a beautiful brick city courtyard with beautiful plants, a spot for a dog run, and even a place for a veggie garden. Blaise made sure that the old, weathered bricks from the old backyard were removed, cleaned and carefully reused. The new patio is brilliant.
In sum, the job was completed ahead of schedule and at budget. The work was perfect. The landscaping plants, to a leaf, all survived and are thriving. We are getting rave reviews from family, friends, and neighbors alike. A 10 out of 10 job. Any idea what it is like to not have anything to complain about? If not, call DeMichele.
You would be doing yourself a disservice by not at least calling Blaise and Elizabeth for any of your landscaping or hardscaping needs.
The estimate we received from DeMichele was pretty much the same as the others we received. They were definitely not the cheapest but also not out of line with the others and, since they came recommended, we had confidence in their work.
After we signed the contract and selected the materials, the work was scheduled within a couple weeks. A team of four workers arrived early every day and worked throughout the day only stopping to eat lunch. They were courteous and professional. They cleaned up every day before leaving. A couple changes we requested during the construction were easily accomodated.
The total price was exactly what they had estimated and the results are beautiful. We are very happy with the work and would highly recommend DeMichele to others considering hardscaping. They were so good, we already asked them to do more work for us!
