"I absolutely agree that clear and effective communication must be standard with any job. Every customer has my personal cellphone number and can reach me 24/7 with a call or a text. I always respond promptly. I'm sorry we fell short in your eyes on this aspect. I am grateful that you recognize we took on a job few others would. And are happy your report to be satisfied with the finished work. Thank you for your feedback."
Mr. Bolger responded to my request for quote in timely fashion and quoted approximately as I had expected after talking to neighbors and another contractor. I chose this contractor because of his professionalism. His team showed up the day promised to begin prep for remodel, which consisted of demolition of existing cabinetry, sink and counters, while we met at the suppliers' businesses to choose cabinets, a sink and faucet, countertop and backsplash. Even though, inevitably, some of the orders were delayed, work continued steadily. The Bolger team worked through snow, ice and the flu. The finished job is my dream kitchen.
Additionally, Mr. Bolger and I discussed the budget in depth and carefully considered the age of the house before deciding on specific surfaces and cabinets. He held me to my budget and made sure I didn't over buy. Quality never suffered, though. The kitchen is new, perfect and very attractive. The added storage and convenient repositioning of the appliances, which I had kept, does not overwhelm the 1960 home, but is lovely and suits the rest of the house.
And despite heavy snowfalls (several times), ice storms (at least 2), and the flu, the team kept going. I love my new kitchen.
"It was a pleasure working with you. Thanks for taking the time to review us! - Brian Bolger"
We aren't experienced in hiring contractors, so basically just asked for the job we needed done. We didn't think to ask about removal of trash or caulking between floor and new tub. Would definitely think of these smaller things in the future but it wasn't a big issue. We got rid of the trash, and caulked. As one would expect, it is a bit inconvenient when your bathroom is not accessible in the morning when you have 3-4 people needing to get ready for work in the morning, so the 7:30 start time was a challenge, but I'm sure they would have adjusted that for us.
The job took 4 days with a return on a 5th day to finish the drywall sanding, so that took us an extra week to find time to paint, but overall, contractors were great, were pleasant and friendly. Payment was made in installments as per the contract so I could have the checks pre-written ahead of time so we could just hand them over through each stage of the project, which made things convenient.
Contractors put canvas floor coverings down on the floor, and cleaned up after themselves and were very careful of our flooring.
During bathtub removal or installation, there was a small dent / hole that went through into the closet on the other side of the wall, and since our bathroom is rather small, with little room to work, it was understandable. Drywallers repaired that the same day they finished the drywall in the bath.
"Just to clarify for those reading this review: We did remove all debris and trash from the site, except for a cardboard box. When we arrived to finish the job, you had already caulked and removed the box. It was a pleasure doing business with you and we hope you enjoy your new bath. Thank you so much for your feedback. - Brian Bolger"
"Thank you for your kind review. - Brian Bolger"
"We strongly disagree with this recent review of work we did 7 years ago. This customer was in desperate need for the additional space. We took on this project knowing it would be very challenging to do even the basic job within the parameters of a very limited budget. There was no room for any extras beyond the basic structural elements. Every complaint in this review deals with work that was completely outside the scope of our agreement. The reason for the seam in the ceiling is that any time a new section is attached to an older section, there is a seam. This method of joining the two sections was the most efficient and cost effective solution. The only way to avoid the seam would be to replace the entire ceiling. That cost was well outside the budget and .was not part of our agreement. Moving the ceiling fan would have been better aesthetically, but again, the extra costs for the electrician and drywall work was beyond the budget and not included in our agreement. Concerning the siding. We discussed with the customer impossibility of matching the old siding precisely. We told the customer that the problem could be solved with painting, but at no time did we promise to do the painting as part of the job. About the leaking roof: It is our opinion that the new roof we installed is not leaking, but rather the existing roof we tied into (which is dates back at least to the 1960s) is responsible. We believe the addition was a success and an excellent value when considering the limitations of the budget. However, we do understand that the customer is unhappy and appreciate her feedback. In the years since, we have used this job as a learning experience and strive to be more precise in explaining our estimates and approach."
