"I am sorry this general range of prices given was not suitable to your needs. I feel it is better to give a range of pricing of what our services may cost before we enter into any fiduciary contracts. This range of pricing is based on what a client tells us they want done and is done up front before anyone wastes their time/ efforts."
"Based on what customers show us and tell us about their needs and desires, we provide a range of pricing of what we project the project could cost. This is done with customer provided photos and wish lists, then cross referencing them with some of our many past projects. We do this in efforts to not waste time for both parties, and in some cases we do not fit the expectations/needs of a client."
A big "Thank You" to Ray Nelson and his awesome crew.
The only issues that bothered us was the extended month that it took to get things installed (some of this was because some cabinets were not ready and the other was because of other projects that were going on) and an issue with the staircase design (used paint instead of original wood - which looks a bit odd), but we can assume some fault here and write it down to miscommunication.
That being said, I would recommend Nelson Kitchen & Bath without hesitation to anyone that wants to have a beautiful kitchen, bathroom, and probably any other room you like. They use high-quality products and the pre-planning that goes into their efforts is great too. Good luck!
The outstanding difference that you will receive from Nelson is the creative design developed directly from exactly what you want to achieve. I cannot state this strongly enough. I see a lot of previous reviews were concerned about $1500 retainer. In fact, my husband was also totally against this at first, even after Nick (designer) gave an initial 'rough' concept. We went agonized over possibly spending $1500 with nothing to show (especially after a previous horrible experience with another contractor on a bathroom counter project). We interviewed many other contractors. No one could provide a concept with the same level of thought. I was so totally frustrated with not being able to get any concepts from anyone else to show what they would do for the money. So, we took a chance, and I am SO glad that we did!
I will tell you that you should not worry about not liking the design, or having spent the retainer and not getting EXACTLY what you want. Nick will work until he "gets it' and he works across all genres and tastes. We went through 3 major ideas. No one in the area will take this much time to design what you want, and the $1500 will go towards the renovation. It is worth every penny! Ray and Nick listened carefully to our needs from day one. They determined what our likes and dislikes were, balanced both of our quirks, and, after a few short visits, Nick had developed a unique design concept that went well beyond the traditional cookie-cutter kitchen. We had a few tweaks, but no worries - Nick worked until the design was perfect and exceeded our expectations. Not only did he provide the most creative design with an artistic flair, it fell within constraints and the budget that we discussed. This is truly Nelson's unique talent - the transformation ideas into an outstanding design.
Ray had one primary foreman (Rich) who completed much of the work at the house and who was present and available every day. All workers were reliable and prompt. If I had any request, they took care of it. They are all friendly, easy-going, and easy to deal with. And the craftsmanship was excellent - they really know what they are doing and obviously take great pride in their work. If something didn't go quite right, it was prompt corrected.
All-in-all, Nelson offered the best value - We received an excellent, solid, functional kitchen with quality cabinetry, counters and flooring, which I know will last. We didn't have to "settle" for one thing. Nelson met all commitments on time and on budget (unheard of in the construction business). We are absolutely thrilled with the result!
You cannot go wrong by selecting Nelson Kitchen. These folks are good, honest hard-working people who have a rare talent to listen well and a sense transform your intentions into marvelous concepts.
Some recommendations that I have (no reflection on Nelson - this was our first time major renovation that we didn't DIY):
* Have everything written in the contract - a no-brainer. Have every light, switch, outlet, paint color, trim, floor, etc considered up front (there are on-line checklists) - even if it is temporarily "TBD" with an allotment. Think about where you want rugs, where you will plug in appliances, and how you will general function while in the space. Ray does a good job of keeping track of amendments to the contract, and he will change the contract to make sure it remains what you want, but having everything detailed up front will eliminate stressful surprises.
* Construction is very dusty. Rich warned me in advance. There is no way around it. Especially if you are taking out walls and moving things around as wee did. Be ready for it (although you won't be - sorry). If you have any places/things that you want to protect, take the extra steps to tarp and tape or ask to have it moved away from the area - the thin plastic drop cloths won't cut it.
I definitely would use Nelson for future projects.
"Much like an Architect or other professional, after an initial consultation we do require a $1,500 initial deposit for larger jobs and $500 for smaller jobs as a creative retainer to protect our time and services. This $ is then applied to the contract for materials and labor. We work with our clients to achieve their dreams based on a budget that our clients set. This eliminates a lot of hassle for both parties. We serve as advocates on our clients behalf and develop creative ideas/ materials to suit each unique project. As a professional in the business for the past 20 years, we have an extensive list of past customers we encourage you to contact for a personal review about Nelson Kitchen & Bath before entering into any agreements."
I asked for, and received, a list of previous clients for reference, of which I called nearly everyone. They had nothing but praise for the completed jobs. However, all jobs had been completed over a year ago, and when questioned about the required deposit of $1500, NONE were required to pay any such fee.
I never went back.
"As a company, Nelson Kitchen & Bath made a decision 6 months ago to stop giving away creative ideas and drawings for free. Our new standard procedure is to interview our clients, see if we have a good fit, giving a generalized budget for the project based on photos and in depth discussions, and then enter into a creative design retainer agreement saying that we will work together based upon an agreed budget and then when a contract is signed we will apply that retainer as a deposit towards the project. We are professional designers and unlike the services you may get from a big box store, we require an upfront fee for the hours and hours of preparation, detailed drawings, and creative thinking you will be shown much like an architect or other professional. We are a small family run business available and at your service!"
When he said he and his crew would be there, they were. Very reliable.
Very pleasant to deal with.
And most of all, when there were a few minor issues that needed dealt with at the end, he took care of every detail to ensure I was satisfied.
I would defnitely recommend this company to anyone Building New or just wanting to Remodel and Update their homes.
