Nov 2008
Electrical Service
It was an experience I will not forget and was terrible. First, get a written estimate of all work BEFORE you get ANY contractor, and then get at least 3 bids. Get an explanation of what you will be getting, and get it in writing----get a contract.
Response from SHIMKO ELECTRIC
"That on or about Nov. 11th or 12th, 2008, I was hired to replace an old Federal Pacific breaker box and in the process replaced all the breakers with new breakers, a new entrance, and upon completion, having it inspected by the Municipality for approval. That work was done. Attached is a certificate of completion indicating that on the 13th day of November, 2008, the 100 amp service was passed. The party was billed 7.5 hours for two men. The first day, 6 hours of the work was done; the second day was the 1 and 1/2 hours for the inspection. The total amount charged for labor broke down to $36.66 per man per hour. The material which was purchased at either Hite Electric or Lowes wherein the sales tax was paid and the purchases were basically retail purchases provided: 1 - 100 amp load center main breaker; 3 - 220 breakers; 12 - 110 breakers; 2 - 8" ground rods; 3 - ground clamps; 2 - 1 1/2" connectors; 25' of No. 6 copper ground wire; 10' of 100 amp service cable; straps; washers; screws, etc. All items were listed on the invoice. The complaint is that they were charged too much. The items were marked up to permit 15%% profit on the material. The complaint stated that they wanted AFCIs. They are required in bedrooms or for room replacements in wall plugs, not part of the contract. All we did was provide the service and the entrance. Attached is the certificate of completion. Included in the price was $90 inspection fee which we believe we are entitled to have reimbursed. Work was done in a workmanlike manner as is evidence by the certificate of completion and approval for code inspection. I am not embarrassed to say that we made 15%% profit on the materials but to have two certified electricians billing $36.66 per hour per man is more than reasonable. - John Shimko, Owner"
