The many glowing reviews on Home Advisor convinced us to hire Afterthought Landscape Modifications to install our concrete patio in November 2016. Owner Jerry Vashina claimed he exceeded our expectations. He most certainly did not. The barely-used patio already has cracked and the edge of it has broken off in two places. Some of the concrete surface is gray, some is white, even though all of it was laid the same morning, from the same truck. Speckles of concrete are on the siding and basement windows along the back of our house. As part of the project, they put a layer of river rock along the edge of the patio. Grass and weeds immediately began growing up through the thin fabric they put under that rock. In some places, they didn't bother putting any fabric under it. Vashina promised to come back in March to plant grass in areas disturbed by construction and vehicles, including a cement truck, but he never did. He was paid in full for the work completed, before all that work, including replanting and sealing the concrete, had been done. We trusted that he was a man of his word. We were wrong. As part of the project, we agreed to have him apply a material to improve the appearance of the foundation wall between the siding and patio, including the back steps. He persuaded us to have that done, for an additional cost. He said $500, but later raised that to $600. We initially expected Afterthought to do that additional work within a week or so. When I called to ask when they would be back, Vashina said there is warm weather between Christmas and New Year's. Despite some very warm days during the winter of 2107, no one came. I called in late March to again review what still needed to be done. We had a nice conversation and Vashina promised they would be back after Easter. His man came back shortly before Easter, but only to seal the patio. Before leaving that day, the employee assured me Vashina knew what still had to be done and that they would return to finish the job. On May 5, I called Vashina to ask if he could commit to a firm date when he would finish the project, because we wanted to get the new patio ready for summer. I felt like I was talking to a stranger. He seemed to have no idea who I was or what I was talking about. Then he claimed we never discussed coating the foundation wall and back steps. As for planting grass, he started lecturing me that May 15 is the last frost free date in Pennsylvania. Told him I am well aware of that date, but it does not apply to planting grass. Suddenly I was talking to a dead phone. He hung up on me. I called back, but he didn't answer. He did not call back. Until that call, the owner of this business seemed like a friendly guy and an honest contractor. My wife called him a week later. No response. On May 22, we sent an email to Afterthought, explaining it was our final attempt to find out if Vashina was coming back to finish the project. Again, no response. On May 26,
