Tom suggested we come to his quarry and view some of the boulders he had in mind for our project. The variance in colors and textures of the red sandstone along with Tom's eye in arranging them added artistry and elegance to our hardscape project. We were excited to get started. The big flood of 2011 slowed down progress a bit, but once the 65+ boulders had been selected and brought to our site, the work went very quickly. Since our driveway goes up a hill, maneuvering the boulders so they would not roll down the hill and into traffic was a critical element to the installation of our boulder hardscape. Tom's skill in placing the boulders with the use of a small forklift and the aid of one strong helper were nothing short of amazing. Not even our rather delicate asphalt driveway was damaged in the process. Even though the old uneven concrete slabs of our patio initially didn't seem like they were going to move without dynamite, Tom proved his tenacity and got them up. Then he showed his skill at handling massive weight as he delicately balanced the huge slabs on his forklift and moved and leveled them again in another part of our property. The recent snowstorm proved just how sturdy the boulder option to landscaping is as we watched our trees and bushes bend and break under the snow's weight. Needless to say, our boulders were "solid as a rock" - pardon the pun!
Description of Work: Tom artistically arranged groupings of red sandstone boulders along a 100' section of our driveway where very overgrown and problematic globe arborvitae had been for the previous 35 years. He also placed the occasional boulder in strategic and complimentary locations amongst the landscaping closer to the house. In anticipation of a new patio and porch, Tom removed two 10 X 12' sections of concrete and recycled them to another spot on the property for use as a base for a new garden shed. Since our property is difficult to access with large equipment, this delicate maneuver with extremely heavy concrete slabs served to solve the concrete disposal problem as well as eliminated the need to pour a new concrete foundation for the shed.
