KSL Roofing & Plumbing & General Contracting

Ksl did my roof , windows , siding , gutters , soffit and facia. I have been trying going on two years to get them to come back and fix a few things. I've had to file complaints with the bbb and pa attorney general and still can't get repairs done. Kurt the owner feels he doesn't have to answer to anybody but himself. he will promise to fix and never show , will not stand behind his product. seems looking back through these reviews nothing has changed. Kurt was Johnny on the spot when he was owed money but after being paid is a ghost. If you don't agree with him over something he will try to bully you when that don't work he will threaten you. I would not recommend this company and if you do hire him make sure you are completely satisfied with work before paying or you'll never see him again. he has done some real subpar work , but he'll tell you how many pictures he has and the job is perfect. you'll see what I mean if he responds to this.

Roof leaked after first rain. KSL unsuccesfully attempted to fix problem mutiple times. Owner quit returning calls. Another contractor examined the work done and quickly determined that step flashing was not installed around five sky lights causing the issues. This problem was eventially rectified by another roof contractor. I would NEVER recommend KSL Roofing!!!!!

The roof was installed in 2009. It leaked. They have returned 5 times to fix it in the last 7 years. The roof still leaks. Response time to calls was very slow. We lost 2 mattresses in the process which he will not compensate for. Now we need a new roof.

Well the windows look to be installed OK but This company dropped a window in my 6 tear old tub. Damaged my brick (Chipped in two places. bent 5 screens never replaced he said they were ordered and 2 months later called me with a representative from the window company putting us on speaker phone I asked him about my screens and he  told me to measure them and let him know the sizes that proves he is a Liar. never gave me my lifetime warranty on the windows. HE also knows I have been doing repairs to our home besause I have been batteling CANCER that is stage 4 and Kurt S Lewis the owner is my nephew and knows this. HE said he would stop over to look at it 3 times and NEVER !! showed up after texting and calling him he got to be a real peice of work and he is my Brothers Step child. I also paid him 300.00 more to repair plaster that was never done, he said See him in court well he already has things in both Allegheny and Westmoreland courts and probably outher county Court houses He has a family member or friend that represents him so sewing him would cost me 4 or 5000 that I will never recover, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY I have pictures and many text messages to back me

KSL replaced windows in my house He damaged my 6 year old bath tub chipping it in 4 places he (Kurt Lewis)  said he will repair it, I wanted a warranty that it will hold up this has been going on for 3 months I called numerous bathtub companies and this type of tub (cast iron porcelin) cant be repaired the other issues are he has not provided me with the warranty papers there are 4 damaged screens he said he ordered and I have not recieved he damaged my brick. i texed him asking for his insurance information and he refuses to give me any information so i can get this issue resolved i said finally i guess we have to go about this the legal way the last tex message from him was bring it on  

Kurt did a roof for us last fall and did a great Job.  We had him back to clean and power wash the gutters and install gutter covers.  As always a fine job.  Our main concern was getting the leaves out of the gutters.  Kurt couldn't do the power washing and gutter covers right away but actually came over immediately to clean the leaves out and then later came back and cleaned the leaves all over again and did the rest of the work.
This company is a class act!   A++++++.  Bravo, Kurt!

March 14th, 2012
Signed a contract with KSL. Contract stated 1/3 of the money due at contract signing and the balance due at the completion of the job. We gave Kurt Lewis the owner of KSL 1/3 down. Kurt said the project would take approximately 1.5 to 2 weeks to complete.
He also said he'd probably begin our project the beginning of May, they didn't start until June 28th,2012. A two man crew arrived and began to remove siding from our home.
On July 3rd, 2012, day 3 of the project,
 Kurt calls and tells my husband he's coming over to our home for additional money. My husband reminds him of the contract terms.
Kurt says he has no money to purchase the materials necessary for the job and if we don't give him another 1/3 he's pulling the crew off the job. The conversation was heated and my husband felt threatened. He hung up with Kurt and immediately called the PA Office of the Attorney General Home Improvement Consumer number. He  found that the contract we signed with KSL/Kurt was missing some key items such as the contractor's registration number, the amount of liability insurance coverage by the contractor, the toll free number maintained by the Bureau of Consumer Protection, a notice of the consumer's right to rescind the  contract and the approximate starting and completion dates of the project.
We worried that if we let him pull the crew we would also lose any money Kurt already had. State Farm Insurance had urged us not to provide any contractor with upfront money but every contractor we interviewed required money at signing and believe me we interviewed many before signing with KSL. Had we been members of Angie's List or consulted the BBB though we would have seen the low ratings KSL had earned and would never had hired them.
Kurt arrived at our home in a few hours and when shown our copy of the contract,he blames his secretary for contract errors, and hurriedly tries to write his HIC # on our copy of the contract.He writes Pa 00651. His actual number is PA006551. Against our better judgement we give Kurt another 3rd of the money. KSL now has over $9000.00 , there are no materials on site and the old siding is partially removed.
The project continued very slowly for 9 long weeks  with only 2 crew members each day. I recall two days when a crew of 3 was on site and another day when 5 men were on site, otherwise only 2 crew members showed up and not on a regular basis.
When we expressed our concerns about the lack of crew members on the job , Kurt reassured us that we would be happy with the results. The crew most often started mid to late morning and depending on the day could be there only a few hours, rarely did they put in a full day's work.  Listed below are a some of the issues the crew had while on the project:
Cell phones weren't working , had to go to store. This was a problem for couple days.
Babysitter doesn't come til 8:30 am. Hence they never started early while the temperature was cooler.
Truck broke down.
Trailor hitch broke nearly causing a disaster when trailor broke free and ran under there truck. Needed to borrow my jack.
Truck brakes failing.
One crew member fell from my roof. ( when I questioned why he wasn't wearing a safety harness , he said the rain came on too quickly )
Crew member cut his hand said he needed to leave job to go to hospital. ( when I inquired about his hand the following day he said he never did seek treatment)
Rain came in dining room because window wraps weren't applied yet. This didn't cause any damage just very annoying mess to clean up. KSL came out and placed tarps over windows.
Noticed that the gutters removed from the rear of my home had been laying in yard for weeks amongst the rest of the debris  from project when I inquired as to why they weren't disposed of I was told they were rehanging them.
I said that is wrong I'm getting new gutters all around. But hence the contract terminology was vague and we ended up paying additional for the rear gutters and fascia board materials. 
July 20th 2012, I awoke at 5 AM to find rain water entering my kitchen ceiling and wall.  The roof was exposed and not all shingles were on at this point.Called KSL, left message.
KSL crew ( not my usual guys, someone new) showed up promptly and attempted to find the source.  
They reassured me that the leak was patched. They left at 8 AM.
10AM rain starts and once again it's coming in the kitchen. my regular crew is sent out and  after couple hours they reassure me they've found the source and patched it.
5 PM rain starts again and again it's coming into the kitchen. KSL crew comes out a third time and stays til 8PM  where they now realize that someone has put a hole in the ice shield. Patch job holds. No more rain but a claim is now filed for damages to the kitchen!!!!
I'm at the end of my rope.
KSL "completes" the project late evening  August 9th 2012 and Kurt the owner is there  in the dark hurrying his crew to finish.
When I suggest they return in the daylight to properly clean up the site, one crew member who is clearly frustrated and tired complains loudly to me that he is about to vomit and wants to quit ( working for Kurt). 
Within 24 hours Kurt sends crew over to pick up final payment. We have a list of items we are not satisfied with and give them to crew. We do not pay the balance. 
Two days later crew comes to fix the items on our list.  
Although we are satisfied with how the house "looks", we decide to hire a home inspector to reassure us that we have a quality job before paying off the balance. We schedule a home inspection , the soonest available time is in 2 weeks.
Kurt calls several times in the next few days to demand payment. He threatens us, using foul language ( F-bombs and the like) and raising his voice, he threatens to call his lawyer uncle and put a lien on our house and accuses us of not having the money to pay up. 
We seek legal advice, they advise us to not have any conversations with Kurt and recommend we send  KSL a certified letter advising Kurt that we have scheduled a home inspection before we give him the final balance.
 As soon as we received home inspection results, (it passed) we  promptly mailed final payment September 7th. 2012.
Our home looks beautiful and the home inspection helped us to sleep soundly.
 The two man crew while pleasant enough to me and my family seemed to have alot of issues.
 Kurt Lewis's arrogant threatening demeanor was a total turn off from beginning til the end!!!

Siding has still not been replaced they did not follow up and I gave up.

Workman done in a week. We did not see credit for overage on measurements.

Contacted Kurt (owner) in June 2011. Gave 1/3 deposit. Although it took him until Oct 2011 to do the job, he told me that upfront. Job was completed in one day. Asked them to come back 2 days later to correct something and he did. Best to talk to owner to get fast response.

Excellent from start to finish. On time, nice to work with. Roof looks awesome with no problems. I'm very happy, especially with how smoothly everything went. Also, they did a great job cleaning up.

We have a big roof and Kurt and his crew wrapped it up in two and a half days.  They did a fantastic job and great clean up work.  They timed all the work around the rain and did the work in sections with each section being sealed up each evening.  We were originally introduced to Kurt through Dave Barnhart of A Capital Chimney and Roofing (his father).  We believed we had hail damage and a year prior had another roofing company and a Travelers Insurance adjuster out and were only given a small amout for some flashing damage and other minor issues.  When Dave came out later he was on the roof all of 5-10 minutes with the same adjuster and Travelers gave us a new roof.  Thanks to Dave we avoided an $18,500 loss that would have been on us.  Anyway, back to KSL.  We loved Dve but when we looked at KSL's reviews we were a little concerned.  It seems that we have learned something about Angie's list.  People are often quick to go here and give a negative review.  In the case of KSL it looks like they have had this happen to them.  I can tell you that our experience was 100% thumbs up.  Because of my concern I did speak to a reference prior to KSL's starting the work and they spoke glowingly of the work KSL did for them.  After the work was completed it looked great to me but then I wouldn't know a good roofing job so I had Bryan Cole of Home Check, Inc. (home inspection company) come inspect our new roof.  Bryan gave his 100% approval on the roof.  Don't take my word for it - check out Bryan's reviews here on Angie's list.  I have used Bryan five times in both residential and commercial building inspections and trust him implicitly.  I highly recommend KSL.  A++++++  Bravo to Kurt and Dave.

I couldn’t get them to come out again for another matter. I’m still trying to get them to replace the siding on my house. I called them many times, they gave me the run around.

I was impressed that I got an estimate and visit from the owner on the same day I called. This company was my 4th estimate and the best so I went with KSL. I was also impressed with the PROMISE (in writing; in the contract) that they would be available 24-7 for emergencies and that the owner provides a warranty well beyond that of the shingles (his own personal warranty). The first day was unremarkable- ripping off old shingles, replaced a few pieces of rotting wood. The second day I had to deal with the company's "best guy" screaming and cursing obscenities into the phone at the OWNER in my front yard bright and early in my quiet residential area. This man then WALKED OFF THE JOB! The job was completed by much less experienced employees and I was so unhappy. The day after the job was complete I noticed multiple defects in my roof, including multiple shingles popping up, my chimney cap wasn't done (at the time it was being ordered I was told), and the shingles at the edge near my gutters were too long and looked horrible. I called the owner and was told he would be over to look and fix what was necessary and my chimney cap would be in soon. This was AUGUST 2010. To date, nothing has been done. They never came back to fix the defects or put on the chimney cap. I called the owner between 10-15 times between August 2010 and November 2010. I was ignored most times but the few times I did talk to the owner he would set up a date and time to come, but never show. The last date he promised to come was November 16th 2010- of course no show. Snow started in November and it's still cool, wet weather but now that springs around the corner I have another contractor set to come and fix the mistakes of KSL Roofing. The owner is nice but DOES NOT deliver on quality work or his promises. DO NOT trust this company for your contacting needs.
