Dwight came to give me an estimate, and we discussed the work. His price was exactly in line with the other two estimates, but his communication seemed better (I really like being able to communicate by email) and he seemed to understand the job well, so I went with him. This was probably my error, but I assumed that although he would have helpers he would be there for the actual job. Maybe that's the difference between an electrician and an electrical contracter. His crew showed up for the job, and although they did some things very well (the recessed lighting, changing the light fixture) in two major jobs they seemed determined to do the job in the easiest way possible rather than the proper way, with very poor results. The biggest issue was with job #3. We had one non-grounded plug in the middle behind our bed, and we wanted to each have a grounded plug behind each of our bedside tables to plug in our phones, etc. within easy reach. Not something we would normally have spent money on, but we figured we'd add it to the other work being done. There is a window above each bedside table, and therefore instead of running the electric around and under the window, the crew member decided that was too much effort and just placed the electrical sockets out in the middle of the bare wall, in full view, between the bedside table and the opposite wall. It was ridiculous, like I would deliberately place a socket in the middle of an empty wall and have all the cords pulled out to there? He had already cut the big holes in the wall by the time I realized. I told him he needed to fix it, and he just kept saying how it was "much harder" to put sockets under the window. Well, that's why you get an estimate, right? He did eventually place the sockets appropriately, but now we have poorly-patched giant holes very visible in our walls and I have to buy more paint to try to fix those up. I don't think the walls will ever look right there no matter how much I try to fix those patches. They did a similar thing with job #2. The previous owners had run an extension cord from the side wall to behind the entertainment center, but we wanted a permanent four-plug outlet there. They kept saying it was "too hard" to put it in the wall, and could they just run the cord through a pipe and have an electrical box sticking out from the wall instead? Well, no, that's basically no improvement on the extension cord. They did figure it out and ran a pipe on the outside of the wall in the garage, but again this followed lots of complaining about how hard it was. In a few ways they were very good. They consulted me about the placement of the recessed lights. I had originally told them to hang the chandelier too high and they lowered it for me. And I was so flustered by the problem in the bedroom I signed off that they had fixed the other outlet in there (job #4) when they had not, and Dwight did send someone back to fix that. He said he would come back and look at the patch job, but he did not, and he never really apologized for that. In my mind that was a huge problem, and will keep me from using this electrician again when there are others similarly priced who might supervise more closely or have more conscientious crew members.
