The sales staff at Bee Jays were helpful and showed us several products for new flooring in the kitchen. We chose Mirage engineered wood flooring in Maple with a medium dark brown finish. Bee Jays has its own subcontractors who provide estimates the cost of installation, provide advice on how to prepare the floor and install the flooring. We spent weeks working on removing the old floor and leveling it to the best of our abilities. We are not contractors but have done home improvement work in our home before. When we were ready, we contacted Bee Jays and made arrangements for the installation to take place. On the first day of work the contractor said he might have difficulty with the floor. It was an uncomfortable situation for us as the contractor seemed to have trouble finding the right solution to level parts of the floor. The leveling cement he used to attempt to level one area leaked under the plywood boards to the basement below and also out a small gap in the threshold to our back patio. He apparently felt confident enough after taking those steps to proceed and installed the engineered strips by gluing them down. We were disappointed that the wood strips were not arranged better to put knotholes and darker areas out of high visibility areas where they would detract from the beauty of the floor. There was also bits of glue left on the floor by our back door which we removed ourselves. The contractor and his assistant struggled to put the slide in range back in the island but eventually put it back in place where it belonged.. The contractor said he would come back and install the new baseboard trim but we said we would do it ourselves. We didn't want to deal with the contractor any further.
We decided to write because when I removed the bottom drawer of my range recently to clean under it I found that the contractor left his pry bar under the range with one sharp edge against the new wood floor and the other against the bottom of the drawer to the range. One of the adjustable feet of the range (to level it) was off and range was being held up on that side by the island countertop. There are several deep gouges caused when the contractor and his assistant put the range back.
We did install the wood trim ourselves. The floor has been easy to clean and generally looks nice except for the scratches. We discovered the floor marks rather easily. This flooring is not suitable for homes with dogs as their nails will mark the floor. Sliding a chair across it may mark it. Soft-soled shoes are fine. We put several all cotton area rugs on the floor and felt pads on the feet of the chairs.
