Al from Acumen Construction Company (ACC Basements) was recommended to us and turned out to be finishing a job up the street.  We met him and saw the quality of work he did as well as how kind and considerate he was.   I knew pretty much what I wanted for the basement ? a family room, bedroom, storage, and (depending on the cost) a bathroom.  Al came over and took pictures and measurements.  He told us what would have to be fixed before any work could be done. We had old piping issues that needed moving.  
Al presented us with a great design that we modified slightly. We decided not to enclose the bedroom.  Al worked with us to keep things close to budget.  Having been doing this work for many years, he has a great system down and has wonderful suggestions. Basically Acumen did all the framing, electrical, sheet rock, venting, plumbing and painting.  We were responsible for purchasing the bathroom items and tile for the bathroom as well as the carpet.  Al also took care of lining up all the necessary permits.  He sent us a contract that allowed for changes, but included what we had agreed upon at a very fair price.  Let me say right here that while Al would accommodate any new ideas, one cannot assume that they would all come free.  He tried to help make sure we purchased items wisely. For example, Al suggested a quality bathroom fan at a good price and picked it up for us.  I used 2 colors of paint for the walls, which helped rein in the costs.  Al lists ways to keep the costs down on his website ( www.accbasements.com). The crew was fantastic.  They were very clean, considerate and took pride in their work. They swept every day and disposed of all debris. Dust did come up the stairwell but I had a door that was crooked in the jamb.  Al fixed it.  
The project went smoothly and the results were wonderful.  I felt very confidant having Al coordinate the entire undertaking although I did keep on top of the progress.  Al and the team kept me informed at all stages.  If I discovered something that did not seem right, it was easy to reach him and have it fixed.  As in any task of this magnitude, there were some bumps in the road, but they were always immediately addressed.  There was a plumbing mix up that set them back a day.  As far as timing goes, I had no deadlines and only wanted things done well.  If I had not requested a bathroom, the basement would have been knocked out in no time.  The bathroom added the time and expense. I always knew when they were coming and they were on time.  Altogether it probably took a little more than 3 weeks but there were days they did not come, which stretched it out more.
