When Seth arrived he was very appologetic for the errors made with my address and phone number and was very professional. He explained that since they had the wrong address, he needed to reorder the report for my home to get a proper estimate for my roof. While we were waiting, I asked about estimates to replace the siding and front and back doors. He went over all my options and provided information and answered all my questions.
About an hour later, he went over my estimate costs. While Seth mentioned that Aspen Home Improvements prices were a little higher than the competion, I almost fell off the chair when he quoted the prices. He gave me quote of $42,000+ just to replace my roof. He was nice enough to provide a 30% discount knocking it down to $30,064, but that was still a lot to take in. Then he gave me a quote of $16,208 for the siding and $8,115 for the two doors and storm doors. Considering the roof estimate was almost quadruple the other two roof estimates I had already received, I was quite disturbed with the price. Doing my homework, I knew the ballpark figures and even allowing a few thousand for labor, parts, etc., there was no way my roof should cost that much.
I was so insulted with the quotes that I thanked him for his time and took the paperwork. However, not only can I not trust this company for providing a fair estimate, I would never do any business with this company as I felt like I was being taken advantage of for being a woman. In fact during the estimate process, Seth tried to play my decision off my sister as I wasn't willing to sign anything that night. He didn't realize I was the one making the decision as I own the home.
I understand there are other customers' happy with the quotes and work provided by Aspen, but I find it hard to believe that a roof for a rancher would be over $40K when the competition is providing an estimate for $11K. Makes you wonder how honest this company and its employees really are when providing estimates to future customers. For all of these reasons, I've chosen another contractor to complete all the work on my home.
I would be very surprised if I hear from this company again and if so, how they can justify such extreme differences in pricing.
The quoting process was great, and we quickly got an estimate. Even though the price was higher than the competitors we decided to go with Aspen after reading reviews here and based on our feeling after the quote that everything would be handled professionally and we would receive a quality installation.
We placed the order and a large down payment with Aspen prior to the end of September 2014 with the assurance that the install would be completed by the Thanksgiving Holiday in November. We had a large gathering planned for Thanksgiving and wanted the project completed before that, and before the weather turned too cold.
Shortly before the Thanksgiving Holiday we were informed that the door would not be ready for installation as planned, but might be ready sometime in December due to an issue getting the glass that was ordered for the side lights and transom from the factory. But this would be without the correct transom glass which was apparently a special order, this was not noted in the brochure used to pick the glass or discussed during the purchase, and would result in an additional 3 months delay to receive the glass. It was agreed that the door would be installed with a temporary piece of glass for the transom until the ordered piece could be received, at which point it would be installed.
Aspen/ their vendor did compensate us for this delay but upgrading the steel door we ordered to fiberglass door at no charge to us, which was very much appreciated.
Unfortunately December turned into the new year and the door, along with the shutters, was actually installed in mid January. The door itself was high quality and the installation techs worked hard and did a fine job. The side lights were correct and looked great.
However the pieces that were supplied for the exterior of the door surround were not correct and were about 6" too narrow in total, resulting in an odd and unfinished look to the door. All of the dimensions for the door assembly were taken by Aspen during the quoting process and were supposedly verified again by Aspen during a follow up measurement that occurred about two weeks after the order was placed.
Also instead of an actual piece of temporary insulated glass for the transom, we received an 1/8" piece of plexiglass which didn't seal very well and flexed quite a bit with the breeze.
After notifying Aspen immediately about the exterior door surround pieces and sending pictures and measurements, it was agreed that it was not correct. New items were ordered and the pieces installed at the end of January 2015. The transom was still clear plexiglass, but we did receive notification that the actual transom glass was due in at the end of February.
At this point Aspen notified us that the remainder of the payment for the door had to be processed to keep our special financing promotion. So this was done with the agreement that the transom glass would be installed at no additional cost upon arrival.
We were notified on February 24 that the transom glass had finally arrived to the Aspen warehouse and that we would be contacted to setup the installation shortly. After about two weeks we did get contacted to setup the installation. There was a small mis-communication between Aspen and the door vendor, who would perform the install, that resulted in the delay and shipping the glass.
The transom glass was installed on March 13, 2015, unfortunately it was not the exact glass that was ordered and doesn't exactly match the side lights. It's certainly close, but for the price paid we expected to get what was ordered.
Overall we're pretty disappointed in the whole process, both with the time it took to complete and with the general handling of the order. Now we have a brand new door that looks pretty good but just a bit off, because the glass doesn't quite match as it should.
I will say that Aspen was open to communications during the process and did what they could to help us out. But there just doesn't seem to be much quality control in place to ensure that what goes out to customers is actually correct, or that what is offered can actually be delivered in the time frame as quoted.
We purchased 2 Angie's List vouchers for Aspen Home Improvement totaling $1000.00. We wanted to replace 2 windows that were drafty. Mark came out to meet us at our house and we decided to stay with the casement style of window. They only sell the Okna brand of window. This was a very long meeting; Mark is very friendly and talkative. This was in September 2014. Aspen had to order the windows. They took a while to come in and, due to our schedules and bad weather, they were finally installed in November 2014. The installers were professional and cleaned up after themselves. We haven't used the opening mechanism much since it is winter, so I can't comment on that. I will say the screens were extremely difficult to remove; they are held in by pins which are hard to grasp. Mark told us he would come out and inspect the installation after it was done, but he never did.
"I agree with you whole heartily and I will address this issue with the outside marketing company we hire as they absolutely should not be calling anyone on the DNC list. Adamson CEO Aspen."
"We really appreciate your feed back and are pleased you are happy with the service and quality products you received from Aspen. As a company we try to do every job perfect and reading customers reviews helps us stay on track. Regards D.ADamson CEO"
First and foremost, I've waited a long time to write this review only because I wanted to compare two companies with the exact same product. In March of 2014, I hired Aspen to install 13 Okna Insul-tech Windows for the upstairs of our house. The sales man, Mark, came to our home and seemed very friendly. After talking to my wife and I for approx. 2-1/2 hours about his life story, a sales tactic that I learned afterward that they use, he talked me into spending the $814 a window. YES $814.. So I signed the contract and was not given a specific date that they would do the install. A month went by and I still did not hear from them. I figured they would call me when the windows arrived and really didn't think to much about it because the windows are special order and I'm a patient person. Although, good companies at least keep the customer in the loop. Towards the middle of May, I decided to call Aspen to see if they could tell me an approx. date that the windows would arrive. I spoke to a woman named Tammy who stated "Oh yea, your windows are here lets set up a date." I set up a date and when I got off the phone, I thought to myself; I wonder how long the windows were at their warehouse? So at the end of May, Installer Scott showed up, all by himself, and installed all 13 windows. I was stunned at how fast this guy was and he was extremely personable. After installing the windows, he told me that he would be back the next day to install the capping. (Capping protects framing around the window from the elements) Not a big deal except for the fact that the next 3 days it rained. On the 4th day, Scott returned while we were at work and capped 9 windows. 4 windows in the back of the house were not completed and I couldn't figure out why. 3 more days passed and I heard nothing form Aspen. I called and again spoke with Tammy. She told me that Scott was on another job and she would call him to see when he could come finish the job and that she would call me back. Needless to say, she never called me back. The next day I called them AGAIN and got some BS excuse from Tammy as to why she never called me back. OK, Whatever! We set up another date and I took a personal day from work so that I could be home to make sure the job got complete. The date came, now 2-1/2 weeks after the original install, and by 10 a.m. no one showed up. Extremely frustrated, I called Aspen and Talked to Tammy. She told me that Scott should be at my house. She then said she would call Scott and call me back. An hour went by and, at this point my blood is starting to boil. I called Tammy back and asked her what was going on?She told me that Scott was at my house. I said, "UMM no he's not, I'm home and he's not here. She then said hold on and put me on hold. When she returned to the call, She said "MR.Morgan, Scott said he's at your house. I said "Tammy, I'm NOT Mr. Morgan. There was a long pause and I said this is Mr.$%^&. She said oh I'm sorry. I said Tammy we set today to finish this job. Why is Scott not here? Again she gave me so BS excuse of why Scott wasn't here. I then told her that the framing of my house has been exposed to the elements for 2 and a half weeks and that she needed to get someone over here to complete the job or she would be hearing from my lawyer. She then said she would send John out if he was available. REALLY?? I hung up the phone and was completely outraged. About 20 min later I got a call from John who said he could come out in a couple hours. John then showed up and finished the capping. I could tell John was NOT happy to be doing this. Once the job was complete, I heard NOTHING from ASPEN. No apology letter, no call from the owner David, NOTHING. Here I am spending $10,500 of my hard earned money and this is the kind of treatment I get? Needless to say, the bill arrived approx. 4 days after everything was FINALLY done. Complete lack of Communication and totally unprofessional. To top it all off with a cherry, I contacted CHOICE Windows in Oct 2014 and got a quote from them for the exact same windows for the bottom half of our house. It made me completely sick when I realized how bad ASPEN ripped me off for each window. $580 compared to $814 a window. UNREAL considering Mark told me that there prices are "SO GOOD" because they don't advertise. Complete BS... However, the fact that I got ripped off is my own fought for not shopping around.(My mistake is your gain if your reading this---> SHOP AROUND) I'm more mad about how I was treated by these people. They took my money and ran! To wrap this up, CHOICE WINDOWS completed the rest of our project and, from start to finish, did a PHENOMINAL JOB!!! I highly recommend them!
"We are so sorry for the frustrations we caused, but can we start from the beginning; In July of 2013 we installed a large 3 pane sliding glass door. I personally inspected the work, you where highly delighted with the product and how it was installed In May of 2014 we installed 9 Double Hung and 4 Sliding windows. I personally inspected the work as the inside was getting finished, you personally thanked me for the great job our installer was doing. At this point we could not finish because of the weather. I would like to point out at no time did this alter the quality of the job leaving wood exposed as it was all checked before we covered and finished the installation. Yes at this point our office should have been more in communication with you, that has since been rectified. As a company we have grown 5 fold in 2 years and out of the 700 plus jobs we do a year I can honestly say there are very few problems. But you are absolutely correct, having one unhappy customer is not good enough. Now reference to your pricing; The work we did was different from just putting in straight forward Double Hung windows you just had done, there was joinery work involved with the sliders which cost more to begin with. The other difference is you ordered 2-tone windows, beige outside white inside, there is a significant cost increase in ordering these. All that being said the main reason I believe is our manufacturer recently for a short period of time was offering windows with 2 colors at no up charge. I'm really pleased you managed to take advantage of the offer and sorry it was not available previously but please don't take it out on Aspen. Now reference your windows; Aspen get windows manufactured and install different to 99% of companies, one being the company you mentioned, all our products and labor are warranted for life. The company you chose, a reputable company, does not offer what we offer. Yes I believe if we had done the other windows we would not only have been competitively priced but better value for money. Again I apologize for any inconvenience caused and wish you well for the future. Regards D. Adamson CEO"
He checked the dimensions of the old door and removed it from the frame. He checked around the frame for wood rot and prepped for installation. After installing the sliding door into the frame he leveled it and nailed wooden slats to compensate for the dimension difference (the sliding door was smaller) and caulked around the wooden slats.
The installer did an excellent job with what he was provided with. I asked questions during his process and he patiently explained
all the details as he was performing the installation.
I do feel the salesman should have told me the replacement door would be smaller that would have allowed me time to look for
paneling or slats that would match the decor of the area instead of having plain unpainted wooden slats around the frame.
"I understand exactly what you are referring to and apologize for our lack of communication. The installer is correct in saying the patio doors are set sizes. In saying that our detail measure man should have given you options on how the inside trim work could be done. That will definitely be changed in our process. I'm pleased you are happy with the overall look and quality of the patio door. Regards D. Adamson CEO"
"To answer your question. When we go and see a client and they wish to order with us we take a rough measurement. That rough size is sent to the factory, after the cancelation period, to hold the price on the vinyl and glass. This holds our pricing. We then have a detail measure done to make the windows. If we didn't do this and the factory had a price increase whilst we were waiting for the detail we would have to pass that onto the customer. Something all customers would not appreciate. This is exactly what happened in your case. You contacted us after your cancelation period ended, we could of held you to your contract in full. We didn't. You wanted to have your own contractor install and we agreed to let you adjust your contract and take off the installation cost. We sent out our detail measure person and you refused to let him measure which now costs us to set another trip to measure. The windows you chose are custom made and in this case we feel we have done all we can to help"
Someone from the company called to schedule an installation date for 10/7/14. I canceled a doctor's appointment to make this appointment. Someone called before the date and said they had truck problems and ask if they could come on Saturday, 10/11/14. Installers showed up bright and early and it was raining very hard so they ask to come on Sunday, 10/12/14.
Father and Son Installation team showed up on Sunday and did an EXCELLENT job for us.
I believe we bought a Quality product. I was really disappointed with the Sales person who came to our home. My overall rating was impacted by our experience with the Sales Person. I rated Professionalism Excellent for the Installation Team.
I think it should be spelled out clearly that there is a minimum order of six windows.
"I really appreciate your comments, without them we could not put things right. There has been some confusion through Angie's List deals which we hopefully have sorted out. I will talk to the estimator who come out and make sure he and all the other estimators are aware of customers concerns. I am pleased you are happy with your new windows and did not mind us coming out on Sunday as the weather is something we cannot control. Regards David Adamson CEO"
