Boy do I wish I saw this other review on Angie's list before hiring Mike. Like that guy, Mike actually was the project manager for the company that built my house so I hired him on the side to build my deck. The deck was completed in July '16 and I thought everything was great until about 3 weeks ago when the township left a notice on my door that the deck did not pass inspection. I was of course perplexed because it had been 8 months and now we were hearing of this for the first time. When I called them to inquire they sent me the failed inspection from 8/16/16 that they went over with Mike. Needless to say, Mike never bothered letting us know there was a problem or make any attempt to fix the issues. Now I am left trying to figure out how to fix all of Mike's shortcuts to meet township standards without tearing the entire deck down! He failed on such basic things as ensuring the deck railings were at their required height! After 3 weeks of unresponded calls, texts and voicemails to Mike to give him the opportunity to make this right, I am left posting my experience to warn anyone else thinking of hiring him to be very careful. In hindsight, I should have demanded a signed township inspection completion before paying him. But again, this was the guy that built my house. I thought a deck was the last thing I needed to worry about. However, for what it is worth, after talking with the township, I learned they were constantly babysitting him to ensure he was meeting their guidelines and unfortunately, I am not the only person he built a deck for that didn't pass inspection in my neighborhood. There are apparently multiple others according to the township. Use this as a warning if you hire Mike to do any work for you. Or better yet, take my advice and find someone else.

Hired him as a contractor to build our deck because he was the PM for Ryan homes who built our home. He was to get the permit and supplies and have the inspector come and inspect it after completion. Paid him half up front and other upon completion. Construction was done while we were away for the week. Looked beautiful and well built. Left for a military shortly afterwards. Come home in January 2016 to find a certified letter from the Township building inspector starting that no permit was ever requested, plans were submitted but not approved and deck not up to code.  He finally got the building permit in December of 2015, 8 months after the work had been completed.  He received 12 violation citations from our township here in Hempfield. I had trouble getting him on the phone and finally called from my husbands phone which used a different area code.  He confirmed that he would come over and complete the items that were in violation.  Once verbally over the phone and once through text message.  He never arrived on the dates he said he would return and do the work.  To date I can not get a response from him to complet the items outstanding.  My neighbor just got an estimate for a deck an the gentlemen came over and told me all the things that needed to be fixed on my deck.  He kept saying, " I'm sorry I have to be the one telling you this.  I feel bad".  He told me how my husband and I can fix the problem areas and offered to complete a few of the items "FREE OF CHARGE", when he returned to do the neighbors deck next month.
Mike did this to four new homeowners in our neighborhood.  He's a nice guy, does decent work but takes shortcuts to save him time and money while leaving you hanging in the end. The township has assured us that they will not be fining the homeowners but will continue to hit Mike up for the repairs and proper mechanics.  The assure us the deck will not come crashing down but that in order to bring it to code the work needs to be done.
DONT USE THIS GUY.  VERY DISSAPPOINTED!
