Our property has two houses: a 200-year-old farmhouse and a 25-year-old guest cottage. Several years ago, the 80-year-old roof on our farmhouse was at the end of its useful life. Working for his previous employer, Kevin Creighton, co-founder of Excel Roofing, specked the job from roof to rafter. This included plywood (the old shingles were nailed to lathe), underlayment, copper valleys and flashing, and parging and protecting our three chimneys from pregnant 'possums and other critters. For roofing material, we took Kevin's recommendation of Certainteed Grand Manor asphalt shingles. Through it all, Kevin exhibited the utmost in expertise and professionalism. Soon after the roof was finished, a neighbor said, "What a great looking slate roof!" He was blown away when we told him that it was actually asphalt shingles rather than slate.
In the spring of 2014 when our guest cottage needed a new roof, Kevin was the first person we called. By that time, he and another guy had formed Excel Roofing. Because of our past experience with Kevin, we really didn't consider anyone else. Our goal in creating the cottage 25 years ago was to build something that would fit right in at Colonial Williamsburg in Williamsburg, Virginia. So we went with cedar shakes for the original roof. For the new roof, Kevin recommended a thicker shake than we had used before, and he said that we should pay a little extra for treated shingles. The benefit: a 40-year guarantee. Again, great expertise and professionalism all around. We could not be happier!
