I looked for a roofer because there were two leaks in the ceilings/walls of my house due to leaking gutters and a leaking dormer. I found Caban through the recommendation of a contractor. Based on that recommendation I agreed to have him repair a number of issues with the roof, using highest quality materials (copper box gutters and slate). The bottom line is that he took as much of my money as he could get away with, did shoddy work, and then did not fix or finish the work until a year later when I threatened to bring him to court.
Here are the details:
The contract with Caban was signed on 1/11/2013. Caban told me he'd start by patching the gutter seams so the wall would stop leaking and would fix the front dormer so the roof would stop leaking. I gave him almost $3000 when the contract was signed. He did not return to start the work for 6 week and then requested an additional $6500. He then set up ladders, removed the damaged slates, and did not touch the box gutters. So my house was even more exposed to the elements.
Several weeks after that - without having done significant work on the roof - he requested $3,500 for new slates because he said the size and color of my existent slates didn't match the roof. I gave him those funds, meaning that he had a total of $13,000 of my money. Then he DISAPPEARED FOR 4 MONTHS, doing no work and LEAVING THE HOUSE EXPOSED TO THE ELEMENTS FOR THE ENTIRE WINTER AND MUCH OF THE SPRING. During that period, the leak on the inside wall of the front of the house became significantly worse with bubbling of the paint, and plaster falling off. I contacted him in February and he replied that he was sick and would be back the following week. He did not return. Then he texted in March and wrote this:
because of the weather here, I commited to a inside job with friend in N J. I will be finished in weeks then able to give full attention to you. Slate will be in at that same time also. I will work something out with the front wall repair. Sorry the this all didnt work out the way I said.
He was gone for a total of 4 months, while my ceiling and wall fell apart. Nobody came to fix the ceiling or wall and he did not respond to texts. Only in April (remember that the contract was signed in November) did he return. When he returned, the story was the same - he demanded money (of course I no longer agreed to pay in advance), didn't do the work, texted with excuses, and only returned when he needed money.
At some point he did do the copper box gutters, and they were well-constructed, and very nicely done.
When he finally put slates on my roof, in May, they turned out to be very poor quality secondhand slates of which 1/3 were yellow and rotted out, and of which the remaining 2/3 did not match the color of my roof. When I contacted him to complain, with a photo of my roof showing that it was divided into uneven areas of different colors, he replied "thinking you must have requested that" - crazy!
Ultimately, in fall 2014 (one year later) I told him I would turn the case over to the magistrate, and report him to the Better Business Bureau if he didn't replace the rotted and wrong-color slates with the correct slates, and finish up the rest of the work. This seems to have done it - he sent his son and another worker to finish up in November 2014, and then sent his son to pick up the payment. His son said that I was not the only person who experienced this issue with him, and that he was having to go "apologize to people across Pittsburgh".
This experience wrecked my relationship with the contractor (who said that something seemed to have changed in Caban's approach to his work because other people were reporting the same thing), and destroyed my trust. I had to spend significant money to get my inside wall fixed because it was in such bad shape when the gutters were finally installed.

The only thing that they needed form us was electricity to run their equipment. They are very well equipped and the workers were very polite to me, my wife, and our 10 year old son.

I don't know where they are based out of. I don't know what the cost will be yet. It's part of a larger project. Everything is great about the company. Their workmanship is superior. I don't what else I can say since the job is not done yet.
