Beginning last April we began researching companies that could do asphalt driveways and/or paver walkways. We had 5 companies come to our house to bid on the jobs and after much deliberation we decided to go with J&J for two reasons. They would save us a few thousand dollars and they claimed being able to do both asphalt and concrete paver jobs.
We first began to realize some of the difficulties in working with Jon when we began to communicate by phone about scheduling the work and choosing the type of concrete paver stone for our walkway. Jon and his assistant rarely followed up my calls or emails in a timely fashion. Sometimes days would go by before I heard back from J&J, even after a second or third attempt to get in touch. I also asked Jon what type of paver stones he uses. After he told us the brand, we went to a showroom to pick out our preference. The day the stones arrived at our front yard, they were not the ones we told Jon to use.
It took the J&J paver crew and the asphalt crew about 3 days to complete the job. At first glance everything looked good but upon further inspection some issues arose. The first issue that I encountered was that all of the dried leaves, grass and dirt that was on our old asphalt driveway found its way into our two recycling bins: two full bins. Obviously, this was not recyclable material. I don?t know if the men intended to use the bins to transport it to their truck or they purposely meant to leave us with full recycling bins of dirt but either way, it turned into a huge headache for us to cleanup. When I was disposing of the dried leaves, grass and dirt, I found wrappers from the crew?s lunch within all of the other mess.
The second issue that arose after a few weeks was that the polymeric sand that was laid between the pavers began to wash away and cracks formed between the stones. After finally getting a call back from Jon, he agreed to send some of his men out to sweep in more sand and use our hose to mist it again. When his men arrived, they tried to leave the bag of polymeric sand on our porch for us to do. My wife reminded the crew that they agreed to sweep in the sand and mist it, and they obliged.
The third issue was probably the most disappointing. This past March (less than a year after completion) as the snow was melting I began to notice large cracks again between the pavers and this time between the pavers and the concrete edging. Also, a few of the Belgian Block stones that line the new driveway were loose. I left a message with Jon and he agreed to come to our house to take a look. This is when he and his men showed their greatest lack of professionalism.
Jon kept saying that he stands by his work and they?ll fix it but continued to blame me for poor maintenance, the ?low water table? for dislodging a few stones, the harsh winter, and holes in our yard. He agreed to come back when the ground dried, of course upon my reminder again. At the end of April, his crew came by on a Saturday morning without confirming that they would be here. Luckily, we were home to make sure they repaired all of the areas that were showing such quick deterioration. This crew leader was clearly trying to complete a quick fix and be on his way. We argued about how the work should be repaired and finally he agreed to fix it properly by redoing the areas where the cracks had formed.
Needless to say, I would not recommend J&J for any job. Although we saved some money by contracting them to do our work, I would have gladly paid more to have someone else to the job correctly. It was not worth the yearlong headache.
