Veterinarians
They charged a lot. They were interested in making money than taking care of animals. They were a money-making concern. We were hiking on the Appalachian trail and we had a rescue dog. Another dog took a swipe at it and it had a superficial wound which was not bleeding out, but there was a little bit of blood. We had debated even whether to go to a vet and we had purchased a pet care insurance, but my wife said since we had insurance we might as well go. It was a superficial wound but it was open, so we went to VCA Conewago and it required 3 stitches. The veterinarian cleaned it with alcohol swabs and I held the dog while she put 3 stitches in, and the bill was $400. The insurance paid $125 and it so happened that the insurance company that we got the pet insurance from was somehow affiliated with this animal hospital, like they have the same parent company. So, I got on the phone with the insurance people and raised some heck, so much though that I guess they were embarrassed that they sent us a check for another $175. The insurance company then got in contact with them to know what was going on, and there was a big brouhaha. My wife goes to work and a woman that works with her had a dog that got mauled by another dog that required it to be kept at the animal hospital that she went to for a couple of nights and that had major surgery to repair it and her total bill was $250. We just had 3 stitches put in and our bill was $400, so we have been taking our dog since then to the place that this woman went. I feel these people at the VCA aren’t real and it is unbelievable what they charge. We had to pay over $100 out of pocket even though we had insurance, and I had to raise a big fuss with the insurance company. Also, when we go there, we get the impression that they really are interested in helping the animals and when we go for a visit, it is like $25-30. Before we had this stitching thing, we had gone to VCA Conewago for some routine care because when we first got the dog, it was very sick and we knew that they were pretty expensive, but the last straw was when they charged us $400 for 3 stitches and I had helped in holding the dog. The quality of their service was all right. I had taken my dog on a Saturday and they were still open at around 1 o’clock, and that was why we probably went there. I also didn’t have to wait very long in there. I will not use them again for any future services and I also tell other people to avoid them like the plague.
