They were very careful and clean laded down drop-clothes to protect the carpet and the work area.
We would highly recommend Hophan Plumbing & Heating they did an awesome job. We will call them the next time we have any plumbing or heating issues.
He would enlarge the existing sump hole to a standard size, install a new pit, install a PVC discharge system to go out the basement wall next to the sump hole, and then on the outside run the drainage pipe along the side of the home into the back yard that the water would run away from the back of the home down the back yard which has a natural slope.
He wrote up the estimate for $1,200.00 and left it. After he left I noticed that the size of the pump was not noted on the estimate. I called and was told that they would either put in a 1/2HP or 3/4HP Pump. This was the first mistake - I did not tell him to write up a new estimate clearly stating the Make and size of the pump, but they had been recommended to us by a friend.
We set up a date in October and I requested a day off from work. Two days prior to the scheduled day I received a
phone call telling me they had to reschedule the job because of an emergency. This was the second mistake - I rescheduled even though he didn't seem to care that it would cost us another vacation day and how do you know about an emergency two days in advance?
On the second scheduled date the other brother showed up with his crew. After starting the job he explained to me that he did not want to put the piping out the wall in the corner where his brother had said it would go because of the fuse box and wires and instead wanted to put it through the wall on the side of a window a couple of feet over. Reluctantly I agreed. (I found out later that two of my neighbors with the exact same style home have their sump pump piping going directly out in that same corner.)
At the end of the job, I had an enlarged sump hole with PVC piping running straight up to the ceiling and instead of going out the wall on the left side of the window they ran the piping in front of the length of the window and then out the wall on the right side of it - almost to the middle of the basement! The whole mousetrap contraption of pvc pipe is held up with one plastic tie to the gas pipe! Outside the home I found that the hole for the piping was put through the vinyl siding instead of two inches lower which would have been under the lowest piece of siding. Then instead of the pipe running along side of the house into the back yard it came straight out through the garden and was laying on the top of the lawn about a foot and a half out aiming straight at our neighbors yard. When I asked how anyone was supposed to mow the lawn his reply was to just lift the pipe and mow under it. This would be quite a feat for someone to be able to lift a pipe in front of a mower and at the same time be behind it pushing the mower under what you are holding in front of it. This actually came from the person who bragged all day about the unbelievable home he purchased from a Doctor with his heated driveway, beautiful bathrooms and how meticulous he keeps it!
When they left, I realized they had not left any box, paperwork, or guarantee for the sump pump they put in. I opened the lid to the pit to find out the Make of it and found that it was a 1/3 HP pump (The same size as the one we had) and I was unable to even see who made it! I poured water into the hole from a dehumidifier only to find out that when the water was discharging it leaked at a seam up at the ceiling falling back down on top of the lid to the pit.
Hophan Brothers was supposed to get back to us with an estimate for updating the Master Bathroom, he even took a diagram that had been made to scale of what is currently there and two examples of what we would like done. I was told that they would call within the next week with a price for the bathroom and also for putting in shut off valves to the clothes washer and a new outside facuet. They have never called.
For $1,200.00 the only thing that was done as promised was to have the hole already in the basement floor enlarged. We already had a good 1/3HP sump pump that worked perfectly fine in a sump hole which was barely bigger than it - so what good is a one year newer 1/3HP cheaper sump pump?
I have no idea how much it will cost to have the pipe re-done properly through the basement wall and to have the piping outside the home run to the back of the house so that the water can drain away from the house down the slope of the yard as opposed to pooling along side the home and then going onto the neighbors yard.
If anyone is wondering why we have not fought this personally or in small claims court - the reason is that: one - because of a friend's recomendation we failed to get a precise estimate - big lesson learned; and second - we had a beautiful, healthy Granddaughter born right after the sump pump fiasco that somehow contracted a virus in the Hospital were she was born. Within the first two month of her life she was rushed to an ER 3 times and spent over 31 days in hospitals fighting for her life. First ER was within 24 hours of her coming home where she was admitted into the birthing Hospital's NICU, then from there she was transported down to CHOP's ER and then into their NICU; and after coming home from CHOP was rushed back again within two weeks to another ER and spending another 10 days in a PICU. These were emergencies and no we didn't know about any one of them two days before they happened.
