We had an approximately 20-year old 60,000BTU propane furnace, which still ran okay but did not adequately heat two downstairs bedrooms at the opposite end of the house. These rooms were an addition to the house long before we bought the home. We don’t know if the furnace was installed before or after that addition. We also wanted to install air conditioning. There had been central air in years past, but we bought the house without air conditioning. We had a few major HVAC companies come out and give us estimates. All agreed that a 60,000 BTU furnace was not sufficient to heat our size house. Most also mentioned that we had problems with the way our original duct work had been sized and installed. Some noted that there were insufficient air returns. Their ideas for fixing the problem differed quite a bit though.

Then we had Jeff Linn, the owner of Linn’s Refrigeration, come out. He was recommended to us as a local installer with a reputation for being honest, competent, and possibly more reasonably priced than some of the larger companies. We contacted Jeff by phone on a Friday afternoon, and he came out to the house on Monday. We found Jeff to be a low-key guy of very few words, but he spent a lot of time trying to analyze and solve our problem. Over the course of 10 days, Jeff came to the house in the evening on 3 occasions, each time spending at least 1 - 1-1/2 hours with us. We even discussed the cost of re-doing our downstairs duct work, which would have involved tearing out a finished ceiling. Finally, however, Jeff thought that we might solve the problem more easily and at far less cost by installing 2 in-line duct fans in the duct work above the 2 downstairs bedrooms. The duct fans would be activated only when the furnace kicked on, and a switch would be installed on the furnace so that the duct fans could be turned on or off independently as needed. Jeff recommended that we at least try the duct fans to see if they solved the problem, before going the route of tearing out the ceiling and replacing all the original duct work. (None of the other HVAC companies who had come to the house suggested this.) Jeff gave us detailed written estimates for all of our options.

When we had the work done, Jeff brought 2 of his installers to the house to get them started on the work. The 2 men worked steadily for 2-1/2 days, installing a new high-efficiency furnace, an outside air conditioning unit, the in-line duct fans, a new thermostat, a new air return vent in one of the downstairs rooms, and all the electrical and duct work that those things involved. After they were finished, Jeff came back to inspect the work, to make adjustments, and to explain the workings of the new system to us. He put in an 80,000BTU, 96% efficient, 2-stage furnace and a basic air conditioning unit. We had contracted for a 13 S.E.E.R. air conditioner, but because none were available when the work began, Jeff upgraded it to a 16 S.E.E.R. unit at no additional cost to us.

We had the installation done in late August, so we got a little over a month to use the air conditioning. What a difference. Since then, the furnace has been coming on during some of the cooler fall days, and so far the in-line duct fans have worked like a charm. The 2 downstairs bedrooms are warmer than they have ever been since we’ve lived in the house.

Although Jeff Linn works only in a fairly limited local area, we would highly recommend him to anyone. We were completely satisfied with his work.

I was pleased. This was great work at a fair price. This is a small business and they are pretty busy, so don't expect them to do an install overnight. Once the job was started they worked on it every day until completion. I would recommend this business to anyone.
