We already plan on using Tom and his crew for additional work on our home as funds permit...
Tom and his crew went above and beyond while working on the renovation of our master bathroom and powder room. We had a general idea of what we wanted to do, but no idea where to start. Tom was able to tell us exactly what we would need and how we could make the best use of our limited space. He was always available to answer any questions that we had both before work started and throughout the entire process. He really listened to us and was able to deliver exactly what we wanted. He took a cramped and outdated master bathroom and without adding any square footage managed to make it into a spacious retreat that is now one of our favorite rooms in the house. He is a complete professional who takes pride in his work and it definitely shows. He paid attention to every detail and worked hard to make everything perfect. In addition to work in the bathrooms, Tom's team also did some general work in other rooms in our house including replacement of light fixtures, ceiling fans and painting. Their work is excellent. I would not hesitate to recommend Tom to anyone who is looking for a contractor. We look forward to working with him again in the near future!
Our project began with a simple upstairs hall bathroom renovation. The whole thing needed to be gutted and my wife and I wanted the front wall bumped out 18" to make it a little larger too. Additionally, we had a handful of odds and ends that we wanted tackled throughout the upstairs; things like installing crown moulding in the bedrooms, adding recessed lighting and ceiling fans in the bedrooms, painting the upstairs hallway, and adding lighting to a large attic area off one of the bedrooms. Tom estimated being able to complete the bathroom and hallway work in 2-3 weeks. The whole project, with the bedroom work, was finished in exactly four weeks, on time and on budget.
All of the work was completed by Tom and his two guys, Pablo and Hugo. All three of them are incredibly polite, respectful workers. We trusted them working in the house while we weren't there and I don't see any reason why you shouldn't either. Throughout the three weeks, Tom was consistently asking how we felt things were going, whether everything looked okay, and always asked our opinion if there was more than one way to do something. A lot of contractors just want to get the job done; Tom wants it to get done the way you want it done. A perfect example of this occurred with the bathtub we special ordered. The first one arrived, they opened the box and one of the edges was cracked. I feel like a lot of contractors would have pressured us to find a replacement at Home Depot right away so that the job wouldn't affect the start date of their next project. Tom applied no pressure at all, helped us decide what best to do, and when we decided to reorder and wait for the tub, adjusted the work schedule accordingly so that they were busy and the timeline stayed pretty much on track.
As for the quality of work, I'm a terrible perfectionist and have done just about every DIY project imaginable in a house myself earlier in life, so I know where shortcuts can be taken. I'm happy to say that I haven't found any of those with this project. Things were simply done the right way.
We first contacted Tom about doing the project several months before they started. Throughout that time, he checked in on a number of occasions to ensure we had secured the necessary fixtures, provided his opinions on how best to purchase certain items, etc. While I don't know if he can assist you with design work (we did the design ourselves), you should not hesitate to pick his brain if you have questions as he has a wealth of information and is very willing to share.
Finally, we have already discussed some potential renovations we want done in our kitchen and Tom will be the first person we call when that is ready to begin.
If you are looking for someone who is a master of his craft look no further. Tom is knowledgeable, honest, hardworking, responsive and personable. Several years ago Tom renovated our kitchen and my husband and I were so pleased with the way that Tom handled the project and his "can do" attitude that we said we would be willing to pay a little extra to hire Tom for everything. True to our word, many years later when we were thinking about renovating our main bathroom we contacted Tom. In addition to the bathroom renovation, Tom noticed that our family room ceiling was in need of repair. Tom had his team spackle and paint the ceiling and also paint the foyer in our home and the best part was that he didn't charge us a dime for all of the extras.
Tom Hill and is team are the absolute best!
My husband also wanted me to make the following points:
- Tom can help with design - suggest alternatives - both functional and cost - he has a good eye for color coordination (paint/tile/stain combinations).
- Tom cares that you are happy with the results.
- Detail to work is excellent - both carpentry and tile work.
- Tom doesn't take shortcuts, takes the time to do it right the first time.
- There are never any surprises on cost or schedule.
- Once Tom starts your job, he works it until it is finished (no pauses while he goes off on another job).
- Tom's crew is always neat, polite and personable.
- Tm is happy to do all purchasing for you, or let you do the purchasing.
- Tom will happily resolve supplier issues for you (even if you were the one who initiated the purchase).
It would be hard to exaggerate how much we love Tom's work.. Here's why we''ll continue to hire Tom for future projects:
- He's highly skilled in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, tile installation, the works, but is not afraid to consult other experts in these areas for complicated installation. For example, when a plumbing issue presented a problem during a tub installation, Tom called his plumber contact who arrived immediately to help resolve the problem. He didn't waste our time or money on issues that could be resolved quickly.
- He saved us money. On several occasions, Tom has reviewed and considered our plans and product selections and made suggestions to help us save money. For example, after reviewing my selection of bathroom mirrors, Tom recommended a similar style for half the cost. He also looked at my tile choices and didn't hesitate to recommend a different type for durability and ease of cleaning. He's also made recommendations that helped us rework an existing space without having to knock-down walls and build out. All of this saves us money now and headaches down the road.
- He adapts well to changes. I can think of a handful of situations where Tom had to readjust his work to accommodate changes. For example, I forgot to tell him that our bathroom vanity had feet requiring him to reinstall the plumbing behind it. He's not the type to get upset or start writing up change orders. He's reasonable and fair at all times.
-He just gets it done. Sometimes the cabinet company delays a delivery or the carpeting installation date gets moved. Tom doesn't let these uncontrollable details get in the way of his work. He finds ways to work around delays to get the work done on time.
-He shops for supplies and disposes of demolished materials himself. Unlike past contractors we've worked with, Tom doesn't ask us to run all over town picking out and picking up supplies. He asks what we want and gets it himself. This is a huge time saver for us. He also doesn't charge us for demo removal fees or take up a huge space in our driveway with a disposal bin. He simply loads up his truck after removing old cabinets or flooring and disposes of the materials on his own.
-He's a great guy to have around. We're a family with young children and pets and don't want a parade of contractors and strangers coming into our home everyday. Tom is a polite, professional person with a warm, engaging personality. In other words, he's blends right in and is a joy to work with.
It could not have gone better. From demo to completed kitchen. The detail work was amazing. Everyone who sees the kitchen asks me who did it. Tom took the kitchen down to studs and moved the sink and to the window area and all appliances were moved as well. The tile work he does is unbelievable.
Tom also took a 55 year old bathroom and made it look brand new. I would highly recommend him!
Once we finalized the design, the cabinets were ordered and delivered exactly on the timeline. All the cabinets were accounted for and in good condition. Tom started demolition exactly when he said he would. He was careful to be neat and considerate throughout the process. In just a few weeks, he had our new kitchen back in working order. Everything was done with high quality and careful consideration for detail. Tom really knows kitchens!
Tom handled all the demo, construction, cabinet installation, electrical, lighting, plumbing, appliance installation, and trash removal.
I handled purchasing the appliances, flooring, and backsplash, and installed the floor and backsplash myself because I like doing that kind of work. I also paid directly for the cabinets.
Overall, the project couldn't have gone better, and Tom and Sue could not have been better to work with. I highly recommend contacting Tom for any remodeling project you have.
