Very professional and responsive.
The first hiccup was when the crew came and started building the wall. Instead of a nice curved radius at the upper end of the wall, it was laid out with an angled kink that did not match the radius of the walk and looked like h***. When I pointed this out to the guys building the wall, I was told that this was because we wanted the wall to reach to the end of the house. If we wanted a rounded radius, it would not reach the end of the house. I still don't believe that this was true but those were the choices we were given. We chose to have the wall curve in a nice radius. The extra couple of feet is not a "big deal" but it is not what we agreed on initially.
Another issue was that when the job was all finished, there was still one area where the foundation block was exposed. This was supposed to have been covered in mounded topsoil before the mulch was added. Even with the mulch, there was still an area of exposed block. My wife pointed this out to Bill when he came to pick up payment for the job and he said that he would take care of it. Three weeks later, when I called, he told me that he hadn't been "out that way" and "if you're that concerned about it" he would be out the next day. The solution was to add more mulch. I expect that as the mulch decomposes, the block will be exposed again.
During his initial visit, Bill said that they would trim the existing bushes in front of our gas meter. This was his idea and not that important to us beyond the fact that he said it would be done and it never was.
Overall, our new landscape area looks good and we are satisfied with what was done. The difference between good and great or between a B and an A is the follow up and the little details. Bill and his crew said "want you to be happy" but seemed to forget that when it came down to those little details and follow up.
He and his crew were very professional and courteous - the project was completed and no further problems have occurred. They left the work site cleaner than when they started!!!
This year we had Mr. Dugan's crew spray and kill some weeds, cover the area with landscape cloth & angular limestone/rock. The area was at the base of the wall he built last year. They then performed the spray/cover/install river rock on an area adjacent to a property line which was an area that was difficult to mow.
On this year's project we clearly advised Mr. Dugan that the neighbor at the property line was frequently difficult to deal with and had a bizarre sense of survey results and property lines. Therefore Mr. Dugan's crew MUST strictly respect the property line as delineated by two line stakes with string attached. Unfortunately the crew was not carefull and some of the river rock was allowed to "trespass" onto the neighbors lawn. This resulted in an unnecessary and unpleasant conversation initiated by the neighbor. We contacted Mr Dugan and he promptly had this eror corrected... In my opinion a waste of the crew's time and ours because the crew did not adhere to our request.
When Mr Dugan submitted his invoice for the work we noted that he had charged us for the "call back" to correct the crew's error. He also had included an up charge over and above the quoted price because he said he had incorrectly omitted an area of the job but had provided the labor & material to make a complete job.
We were able to renegotiate the final price of this year's project.
Overall, we are well satisfied with the end result of Mr. Dugan's work. It is unfortunate that the several errors occured but they were over come and the project is satisfactorily completed.
