The following morning, (11/17/12), I was beside myself because I had no heat, it was cold, and not knowing what else to do, I called the POLICE. The police officer told me to stop payment on the check because Lawler had not done the job I had paid them for and to call another HVAC company which I did. The new company came out and installed a new part on the front of the unit and it worked perfectly.
On 2/20/13, I received a letter in the mail telling me Lawler had turned this case over to the DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S BAD CHECK RESTITUTION DEPARTMENT. They also sent me a copy of the form that they had supposedly sent to the District Attorney.
I followed up with the District Attorney's office and found out that they don't even handle this kind of an issue because it was not a "bad check" - checks are considered "bad" when there are no funds in the account to cover the check. The woman I spoke with in the DA's office also told me they never received any paperwork from Lawler - so Lawler was threatening me hoping I would get frightened and send them the money.
This company is one of the worst companies I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with and I would advise Angie's List people to stay away from them. Can you imagine - the heater wasn't working after their repairman came to fix it and when I called to let them know the unit wasn't working (3 times over the following two days), their repairman never returned my calls.
And then to threaten me with the DA - well it speaks for itself.
"[member name removed] called on November 1st for a maintenance service on her gas furnace. We scheduled a mutual time on November 14th, 2012. The technician with 35 years experience, traveled to the home at 10:25 am. When we arrived the furnace was not working. The technician found the thermostat was not sending a signal to the furnace. The technician quoted $75 for a Honeywell thermostat and $88 in labor to install the thermostat and perform the maintenance. The customer insisted she would replace the thermostat herself. The technician proceeded to perform the maintenance with thermostat jumped out and charged her $80 for the service and $7.00 for the air filter. A maintenance service checks all the furnace safeties and the mechanical operation of the furnace, which was operating properly with the exception of the thermostat. The technician left the home at 11:27 am. When [member name removed] called to state she had no heat, of course we asked if she changed the thermostat because this was the only problem we found. We spoke to the technician and he stated we would have to come out to her home again to troubleshoot the problem. [member name removed] was irate. Usually we do not tell the customer a technician will call them directly, because it is our office's job to communicate with the customers on the telephone and a technicians job to repair your system at your home. We believe [member name removed] should have forwarded us a copy of the repair work from the other company before she stopped payment on our check. We believe this is unfair to our company."
