Great local company. We'll use them again.
A few more weeks went by, and a few more calls from me. I finally got a call from Mark saying that "the big boss" wouldn't allow him to do any work until I paid the balance I owed. (Mind you, Ron Kunco told me more than once that I didn't have to pay the balance until I was satisfied with my lawn.) I called to talk this over and was treated very rudely. The day I mailed the check, in the fall of 2012, hoping then that my lawn would be repaired, I was served with papers for non-payment. Another phone call to the company and I was treated very rudely once again by the woman on the phone. She was very threatening and told me there was no way I'd ever beat them in court.
So...payment was made and when I called to see when the work would be done I Never received a call back.
It's been a couple years and my lawn is an embarrassment. It looks worse than it did before they started. So I'm out $3000.00 and have to start all over again.
The price quote was remarkably high. Since we wanted a top quality job, we ultimately went with Kunco's, but had to scale back the size and features of the project significantly to meet budget considerations.
We signed and paid the deposit in August, then had to wait until the end of the fall for them to install it. In fact, they said they couldn't place the sealant on the pavers until the next springtime arrived, which turned out to be June 6th. They charged us an additional $1,500 for the sealer job, not telling us that would be an extra fee until the installation of the pavers was completed.
The workmanship itself was excellent, however, which makes the binary question above "would you use this provider in the future?" a little hard to answer. We might consider it, but only if they put every single aspect of the job discussion in writing, which we had taken on a handshake.
Here are some of the other issues which arose:
-Standing water. A curved decorative wall was placed, but it holds standing water on the patio surface for a day after a rain. They drilled a few holes with a masonry drill to mitigate this, but not fully effective.
-Forgot conduit. They were supposed to lay some pieces of PVC conduit beneath the walkways to enable landscape lighting installation. Not done.
-Skid steer (tractor) drove on edge of existing concrete sidewalk, depressing one side a half inch. We let that go, but it's annoying.
-Hauled dirt away. The excavated dirt was supposed to fill low spots in the back yard. They forgot, and hauled it away.
-Switched brick pavers. Said they changed suppliers. In the process, lower quality "accent" or trim pavers were used, not the ones they showed us which contained granite chips.
-Lawn re-installation washed out. Placed a thin layer of topsoil and hydro-seeded, again so late in the fall it didn't grow, and remains very spotty. Declined to revise it as requested.
-Grit/filler power-washed away during prep for sealant. Paver patios do not have mortar, but a special filler which is supposed to last. They tell you not to powerwash it away, but in many spots their prep for the sealant did just that; left it as-is.
So, overall, Kunco's job with our paver patio was done with excellent cutting and precise placement of the pavers and walls, but with numerous disappointing aspects otherwise.
