thoroughly covered. The project was done on schedule and the installers performed quality work. There was good

I would use Great Lakes again!
The evaluation of the job, quotation, and contract stages were all handled very promptly and professionally. I initiated the quote request in September and signed the contract with deposit in the first week of October. I was told that the job would be complete no later than 4 weeks from that time. From this point on, everything changed. Materials were expected to be received within 1-1.5 weeks after ordering and the installation was to begin within 2-3 weeks of contract signing. Whern I had not heard anything from the company 2 weeks after giving the deposit, I called and was told that the materials were running later than planned, with a leadtime of 3-4 weeks (double the original quoted timing). I requested - and expected - to be kept informed of the status on this job since I was concerened about the impending winter weather. Over the course of the next MONTH, I had to personally call Great Lakes to get status updates.. For instance, I would be told that materials might be on the truck the following week but then no one would call to tell me if they were or were not received. So I would call. I understand that these things can happen but there is no excuse for not keeping the customer posted. This was especially important in my situation because I needed to work around business travel schedules. Even though I communicated this need and expectation several times, responsiveness did not improve.
Finally, the materials were received the week of 11/12/12, 5 weeks after signing the contract and providing a deposit. They were delivered to my home and piled next to the driveway. I was told that the workers would arrive at my home between 9:00-10:00AM on Saturday, 11/17. At 11:30AM, I finally received a phonecall from the job leader to tell me that his trailer had been hit by a car and they would not be able to start the work that day. The workers arrived late on Sunday morning only to discover that the and quot;wrong fastenersand quot; were delivered so they could not start. The job leader said that he would drive to the distributor (55 miles away) the next morning, get the correct fasteners, and start the job Monday afternoon. After not hearing anything from Great Lakes by noon on Monday, I called (again). I was told that the distributor did not have the correct fasteners at this location and would ship the material from another location for receipt on Tuesday. When I had not heard anything from Great Lakes by Tuesday at noon, I called (again). The job leader told me that the fasteners had not yet been received but that he would call me and quot;one way or the otherand quot; to let me know if they arrived. At 5:00PM that afternoon, having not heard anything further, I called Great Lakes (again). I was told that the fasteners had been received that afternoon and that the workers would begin the job the next morning. They arrived and worked a full day on Wednesday (the day before Thanksgiving) and promised to return on Monday. Then it snowed. They did not show up on Monday and did not call. They did not show up on Tuesday and did not call. Finally, they arrived on Wednesday. Since I was now out of town for business travel, my husband informed me by phone that the workers were not removing the existing roof on the hosue but were instead installing the new metal roof over top of the old metal roof. The contract specifically stated removal of the existing roof, with a cost for removal and discarding of the material. Not only was this a breach of contract, the job leader never spoke to us about the change. Had my husband not seen a side that was only partially completed, we would never have known. This felt underhanded and intentionally deceiving. I returned home to question the job leader in person and was told that he and quot;decidedand quot; to do it this way because they were running out of time in light of the oncoming winter.
I spoke personally with the owner who apologized for all of the troubles we experienced. At my request, our balance was reduced by $1,000, which I was told covered the work that had been contracted but not performed plus an additional $400. This did not seem like enough but I accepted it with the added requirement of a letter from Great Lakes that guarantees the workmanship. I also noted that the promised snow breaks had not been installed and that some fasteners were protruding from the roof surface. He promised that they woud return to take care of these issues and they did this within a week.
