Within a couple of days, Tom, a Martini Roofing sales rep, arrived and presented me with a folder of attractive, glossy GAF materials. He stated that Martini Roofing was one of only a few "Master Elite" GAF roofing contractors in the area. I gave him the deposits of both families, about $5,700, and was told that the start date would not occur until February 2015, because the company was backed up with jobs caused by a recent hailstorm.
Not hearing from Martini by late February, I called and reached Tom. I learned that the start date would be in early March. Work finally began at 8 a.m. on Friday, March 6. A crew of 5-6 workers arrived and put up protective plastic sheeting around the building. The foreman of the crew came to the door, introduced himself, handed me a business card and said, ?If you need anything, please let me know.? He left. Since the foreman?s business card had no cell phone number, I could not ?let him know? anything, even though he was in our back yard: the problem was that the plastic sheeting covered the first entire floor, including all doorways. Old roofing detritus rained down, making it unsafe for me to the leave the house as long as the old roof materials were being stripped. To this I should add that a month earlier, I had returned from 7 weeks in a rehab facility, having broken my right shoulder and hip in a fall. Although I could descend the front stairs, my mobility was compromised. At the very least, I needed to feel safe.
As part of the contract, rotten or damaged roof planks were removed and replaced with plywood. Although the roof surface was made whole, the process allowed splintered wood and debris to fall into our attic. At no time had we gotten any communication from Martini suggesting before their arrival that if we did not have roof insulation or an attic ceiling, we needed to cover/protect the contents of our attic. Since that was not done, we are now left with a major attic cleanup.
By late afternoon, the crew had finished 2/3 of the job, mostly the main roofs. They removed the plastic sheeting, cleaned up
the yard and left for the day without a word. When no one returned the following day (Saturday), we assumed the crew
did not work on weekends and would return on Monday. Again, at no time during the weekend was any communication
from Martini received.
At this point, it should be noted that the shingles used on our roof were GAF Timberline High Definition slate-colored shingles. These may be among the best shingles available in the US today. They are multi-layered and bi-level, shaded and
designed by computer to look irregular, not ?squared up,? as with a brick wall. Although the shingles are designed to look
irregular, they must be applied to follow the pattern of the design and give the roof the ?finished, regular appearance,? as seen in the photos in the GAF booklet.
Since no phone requesting permission to work on Sunday, we were astounded when a Martini crew showed up on Sunday
morning at 7:30 a.m. While the workers quickly went work, the foreman came to the door, gave no explanation as to why they were working on a Sunday, and asked my wife to move our cars from the parking deck adjacent to our garage. She was in her pajamas! Incidentally, there is an ordinance in our borough that prohibits any construction work to be done on Sundays. Martini knows this: it?s just common sense. We, as well as our surrounding neighbors, were furious with the early morning racket. I later learned that, had the police been called, the crew would have been warned off the property and Martini would have been cited for ignoring the borough ordinance.
The quality of the roofing work -- particularly that done on Sunday -- was mediocre at best. (To shingle dormer roofs that are steeply pitched and/or narrow demands much more technical skill than does a main roof.) Unfortunately, the final appearance of these dormers looks NOTHING like the beautiful dormers in the GAF brochure. Certain sections of the dormer appear to have odd-sized pieces of shingles. The top two courses of the rear dormer are patterned upside down. We requested that it be redone, but so far, nothing. Of additional concern is the top course of the front and rear dormers that were put on with broad-head roofing nails and covered with black caulk, making it appear that the roof had been shot at.
Final payment for the job was sent by our neighbors in late March, but I withheld our balance until my concerns were resolved. After numerous, ineffective phone calls, a manager came in May to examine the workmanship and survey my concerns,
summarized above. Among other excuses, he blamed the age of our house for the ?unfinished? look of the dormer shingles. He then used a test paint spray on a dozen of the caulked nail spots, but the spray color did not match the shingle color. It actually made the problem worse. He returned the nail holes he had sprayed to the black caulk covering, but was very vague about if or how that course could be cosmetically improved. While at the house, he asked for our balance-due payment of $5,700, giving assurances that he would send a ?roofing specialist? to assess and re-do the work to our satisfaction. Of course, once the invoice had been paid in full, we never heard from them again.
In summary, GP Martini Roofing is the most uncommunicative, uncaring, unresponsive, unprofessional, unethical and mendacious contracting company with which I have ever dealt.
"We are always disappointed when a customer is less than completely pleased. Unfortunately, we have learned that occasionally, we just have no chance... Without going in to a great deal of detail, suffice it to say that after rain-related reschedules, we requested to do this job on a day that happened to be the homeowner's birthday. Apparently his birthday is very important to him, and this offended him. We are pleased by the knowledge that he will have another, next year. He or she has done a great job delineating the other things that offended them, so there is no point in addressing each. Regardless of the degree to which we disagree with this review of our work, we always remain at the member's service if there are any SPECIFIC areas of concern. The photographs attached depict properly installed roofing materials. If there are other areas of concern, we will gladly visit to correct."
My roof was damaged due to the May 2014 hail storm and I called several roofers for a quote. I'm in the IT industry where computers are either right are wrong, so I have had problems with past with home contractors where they tell me "it's good enough", or "it's straight enough", which starts a bad discussion with the contractor. Plus, I google everything and watch every youtube video on a topic.
Gary was great to work with, he was very client facing, friendly, and knowledgeable, and answered all my questions.
His roofers are not subcontractors and full-time employees, so he has line of sight into quality control, where other roofers don't even know the contractors coming to the job site.
His price was right very fair and lower than the other roofers who took advantage of the storm to make more money.
When his roofers were at my house, they answered all my questions, and told me what they were doing and why. Very friendly.
My roof looks greater than beautiful; I chose GAF Timberline, Ulta HD, Pewter Gray. GP Martini?s total performance gave me enormous peace of mind and trust knowing I chose the best roofing company to be found. Now, when I see their company advertisement displayed on any lawn, I will smile trusting that homeowner received excellent service and quality workmanship, as I did.
As for the actual installation..it was done on time and on budget...no surprises! His crew was professional and courteous and did a great job cleaning up. I would most certainly use them again and I have already recommended them to friends.
All I can is the original problem has not been rectified after 6 months. Caveat Emptor.
"Contrary to this member's prediction of our response, we accept his criticism. He is correct, we have taken too long to solve his problem. This will be rectified immediately if he allows us. GP Martini"
