We started a bathroom renovation with Paul Schubert and we will never use him again. He came up with a good design for the bathroom layout and his estimate was comparable to the other quotes that we had received. It was once the work started that everything went downhill. He made some mistakes that we were willing to live with ( mismeasuring the height of the tub framing) but the quality of his work was poor. The final straw was when he started to tile the shower. We had inspected another job that he had done, and were happy with the quality of the work. What he didn't tell us was that he had subcontracted out the tile work on the other job. He attempted to lay the tile and it quickly became obvious that he was in over his head. Nothing lined up, the grout lines were not consistent and he used tiles that were chipped in obvious places. When we asked him to correct the mistakes, he became upset and said that it was the best that he could do. We decided to find another person to lay the tile and wanted Paul to complete the other work (installing cabinets, painting etc.). He refused because it hurt his feelings to have the work he had done ripped out!We had paid Paul 2/3 of the contracted price and when he quit the job, he initially refused to return any money. He finally agreed to return $5000 of the $20000 that he had been paid. DO NOT use Design Ease. This was a horrible experience and I don't want anyone else to have to deal with this unprofessional contractor.
