Roofing companies represent steel roofs to be durable and long lasting. My steel roof, installed by Ream Roofing (Dallastown, PA), started to develop 30 - 40 speckled or measle like rust spots the size of a dime to half dollar within first few years. I contacted Ream Roofing several times by phone and by letter claiming "warranty". They finally got back to me and without examining the roof pointed blame to the roofing manufacturer, Petersen Aluminum Corporation. Petersen sent a representative out to examine the rust spots and conduct a materials test and later responded back that damage is due to "improper handling and installation by the installer - Ream Roofing" (letter dated Oct 21, 2008 attached). The letter's exact words are: "the apparent red rust problems that the panel's exhibit are the result of vertical and horizontal scratches penetrating the zinc coating and damaging the steel substate. Improper handling and installation of the roofing panels likely caused these scratches". After not hearing back from Ream Roofing on Peteren's findings, I transmitted the information to Ream Roofing in a letter dated 2/3/09, saying that after Peterson's physical examination they concluded their materials are fine and it is the installer that likely created the rust problems through improper handling (letter attached). I never heard back from Ream Roofing. I proceeded to pay another contractor to paint the rust spots last year but this is only a temporary solution based on Petersen's comments which continue to say "Further, if not repaired on a timely basis, the scratches will continue to corrode causing the protective zinc layer to fail". So without the installer, Ream Roofing, helping to resolve this problem I am forced to pursue permanent repairs on my own, which involves the expense to replace numerous steel panels on a roof only a few years old. Needless to say I am very disappointed in Ream Roofing. What happened to the concept of "warranty" and customer service? Ream Roofing constantly advertises "100% satisfaction guaranteed", boasting about their quality workmanship. But this is not the case with my roof. Also, if Ream Roofing didn't agree with Petersen that the damage is likely their fault they should take it up with Petersen and not ignore it and let me hang as a residential consumer.
Description of Work: Contractor Ream roofing remove exisiting roof and installed steel roofing system on large residential house. Follow-up included sagging gutters, front and back. Front was taken care of quickly, however, once back started to sag it took me ~12 months of continually calling to have them fix it (2008). However, now the sagging is back and I will need to have it repaired. Also, many speckled or measle like rust spots have emerged (photo attached) which Ream Roofing as the installer accepted no liability and pointed me to the roofing manufacturer, Petersen Aluminum Corporation. Petersen sent a representative to examine and conduct a destructive material test which they took a sample back to their lab. They concluded rust and damage is due to "improper handling and installation by the installer - Ream Roofing" (letter dated Oct 21, 2008 attached). Ream Roofing has ignored my 2009 letter (also attached) asking them for resolution of this matter. I have about 30 - 40 significant rust spots that are growing and will lead to my replacing numerous panels to avoid damage to my house. Read more below.
