We had worked with Kaller roofing a number of years ago for another section of the house. As before the Kaller salesman was thorough and gave us a number of options including repair of the existing hundred plus year old slate shingles. This turned out to be impractical since the slate had reached end of life (unfortunately). The finished roofs and gutters were a good match to our old house and our attached neighbors house.
We had comparable quotes for the work but went with Kaller base on our previous experience with them and their work with historic buildings in the region. Their price was a bit higher than others but worth it in the end.
Here's the letter I sent to Ray Kaller when the job was completed.
Mr. Raymond Kaller, President
R. Kaller & Sons
One Union Hill Road
West Conshohocken, PA 19428
Dear Ray,
As you know, the Kaller crew finished up putting a new roof on our 200-year old house earlier this week. And all we can say is ?Wow!? When Emily and I met with you and Kevin in that Haddonfield coffee shop back in August before signing the contract, you said that we were about to have the best contractor experience of our lives. And were you ever right! [We met Kevin in Haddonfield so he could show us several completed and in-progress Kaller roofing jobs.]
From our first meeting with Kevin to our walk around the place admiring our new roof after the crew had left for the final time, the experience was just superb. (We have walked around the property admiring the roof and enhanced chimneys many times since.)
The key, of course, is the people. So let me start with Kevin Creighton, one of your point men. Kevin?s productive use of technology was tremendously impressive. He used his camera to take pictures of our old roof, of course. But he used his laptop to bring up before and after photos of other Kaller jobs in ?case study? fashion: Here is what it looked like; here are the problems we faced; here?s how we solved those problems; and here are the final results. (He also used a series of photos to show us the process the company follows when, say, installing flashing around a chimney. Very informative and helpful.)
Chuck Beishl was equally impressive serving as foreman. I know Eric is a foreman in his own right, and we were certainly very impressed with him, too. Perry, Richie, Carlos, and José were also top-notch. My father taught me how to use tools and how to build and repair things. He always insisted that I do things ?right.? The word meticulous sums it up as well as anything.
Well, every one of these guys was meticulous. And each of them had so many skills! (I say this as the author of over 200 videos and print publications designed to show young people what skills are required to succeed in a wide variety of occupations. I do pay attention.) They were also delightfully personable. Chuck managed everything with skill and grace, words he probably wouldn?t use himself, so perhaps I should just say, ?The job went very smoothly, thanks to Chuck.?
The crew took great care to protect our antique, wavy-glass windows and metal roofs during the demolition of the old roofs. They didn?t play a radio?important to Emily and me because we work at home. And they cleaned up everything before they left. You and Kevin both visited the job site to check on the progress, which Emily and I really appreciated. We?ve been homeowners for nearly 34 years, and this really was the very best contractor experience we?ve ever had. As you know, we have an old tin-roofed barn and a shake-roofed vacation-rental cottage on the property. They?re both going to need some attention in the future. There is simply no doubt about the company we?ll hire to do the work: R. Kaller & Sons. Thanks for a fantastic job.
Sincerely,
Alfred Glossbrenner
