When someone came in to the attic, they saw that there was mold remediation that was needed and they found that there was moisture there. They thought there might have been a leak so we tried to contact Kaller again who had done the original work, and they were extremely obnoxious and rude, and were not very helpful so we found someone else that came out to look at the area. It turned out that it had to do with the ventilation in the attic so we had all of that taken care of. The man when he first came out said we needed to sign the contract right away to get the work done or they can't guarantee that they will be able to come out and replace the vent pipe so my sister signed up. I told her to call them back and tell them not to let someone pressure you to take something that you are not sure about, and that you need more information. She called repeatedly to ask if someone could talk to her and they kept telling her that the owner would call her, and the owner never called her. She talked to the guy there and he was rude to her. A month after all of the work had been done sometime by the end of January, the owner of the company got on the phone and called me at work. He questioned me on whatever happened. I was thinking what he was calling me for, he never called us back, and he never did anything. It turned out that he had 2 other people on the phone while he was talking to me, but didn't tell me that so I thought that was extremely rude. It turned out that they used the Certain Teed shingles on my roof, and that there had been a lawsuit about the shingles they used and they were taken off the market the year before they put them on my roof. When I told him about that, he told me he would have to look into that and will get back to me, but I never heard back from him on that. It was just horrible! They called in January and said they were closing up the book from last year and they saw that my name was in the book and said they weren't sure whatever happened. That conversation was so odd so I just referred him to my sister, and my sister told him the exact same thing that they were rude and never got in touch with us. We told him we found someone else to do the work, and we told him of my concerns that the shingles had been recalled before they even put them on my roof, and they still used them on my roof. They should have known about that as a roofing company. Their biggest concern is when we are going to sue, if we are looking to sue them for whatever so they can have their docs in a row. He had 2 people on the phone and he never told me, and I don't like that either. It's not about the work that the workers did, it was about the management people that handled it. I thought for what I paid for, for something that had been recalled the year before, some people had actually filed lawsuit, I was a little concerned about that. They did a very good job on the shingles, they installed them correctly. The work they did, they did them all correctly. It was the other stuff that I didn't care for. The work was good, but the follow up and the dealings that I had with them, they were just really rude. Their responsiveness was horrible. I would never recommend them, and I would not consider them.

After several years of intermittent leaks and patching, it was time to replace our original slate roof. We had worked with Kaller roofing a number of years ago for another section of the house. As before the Kaller salesman was thorough and gave us a number of options including repair of the existing hundred plus year old slate shingles. This turned out to be impractical since the slate had reached end of life (unfortunately). The finished roofs and gutters were a good match to our old house and our attached neighbors house. We had comparable quotes for the work but went with Kaller base on our previous experience with them and their work with historic buildings in the region. Their price was a bit higher than others but worth it in the end.
Description of Work: Removed slate roofing for main roof and replaced with premium asphalt shingles. Repalced internal gutter system with conventional one. Removed two layers of asphalt and tern roofing from wraparound porch. Replaced with same shingles as upper roof. Built and installed custom gutters to match upper roof.

Met with Chuck Kaller for the estimate. He gave detailed information and had many references of homeowners who had very satisfied with Kaller's work. His estimate for the time before the job would start was about right (seven weeks) and he was helpful with all parts of planning the job. The one area I would have appreciated more service is with a call a week or so prior to the men actually starting that the work would begin soon. They just showed up one day to start the job. The work was done professionally and the men were considerate of our schedule. They left adequate protection against rain and cleaned up very well. The finished job looks excellent and we have had no problems in the month thereafter. The price was a bit higher than we could have gotten elsewhere but overall the quality of the work was excellent.

We had to wait a few months for the work to get started, but once the work began everything progressed to our satisfaction. Our roof is difficult to get to and we cannot see the work once it is completed. Kaller took photographs of all the work they completed to show us what had been done, and also showed us what had not been done properly by another roofing company we used years ago. We would definitely use Kaller again. There are two Kaller roofing companies so be sure to get the one on Union Hill Road in Conshohocken.

They charged me $360 to repair 5 slates. The guy came out and replaced one slate. He said that he would send in the other guy to do the other 4 slates. He sent the guy out to do the other 4 slates and it turned out that it was a total of 9 slates. I have now got another bill for $360 saying that it’s 9 slates times $22. I was already charged for 5 slates and he put up one. Then the other guy put up another 4 slates which came up to 9 slates. I should have been charged for 5 slates and not 9 slates. Then he charged me again for the work which wasn’t the deal. The guy was supposed to come out and repair 5 slates, but he didn’t. He came out and repaired one slate. Kevin was the sales person and he was really rude. He called and asked me as to when I was going to pay. So, I told him that his guy never came out, but Kevin said that his guy came out. He then said that I was calling him a liar. My parents were here and they never saw him. He has now e-mailed me with another bill for $360 and he was ready for a fight. He asked me if I got his invoice and I said yes. I told him that I would give him a check by Thursday evening or Friday morning because I was traveling. Last night, I opened up his e-mail. His e-mail said that he was charging me for 9 slates because he did 9 slates for $22. I told him that he had already charged me 5 slates, but only put up one. So, I thought that would be the invoice and I opened up and I saw that they had charged me again. I am not going to deal with it right on. I am going to wait and then ask for the manager of the company. They do excellent work, but the guy who came out had some kind of issues with his personality. The guy who did the work was great and wonderful. My parents were there when he came back to repair. I told my dad to tell him to go to the attic and to tell him that there was a huge hole in the roof where the bucket was there. So, he went up into the attic and he found the bucket. Then he said that there was a huge hole there. He was really good about doing the repairs and he didn’t have an attitude at all. It was Kevin, the guy who comes out and looks around is the guy who has a really bad attitude. With the work that was done, I think the foreman is excellent. Kevin was ridiculous to deal with. The way he was screaming at me, I kept the phone away from my ears and then I gave it to my parents to hear. I am really upset about the price. When it comes to the quality, they do great work. The foreman is great and they are all great, but I think Kevin needs a vacation or he needs to retire. Kevin came out the first time and he said he would do an estimate for another part of the house, but he didn’t because he was doing our neighbor’s house down the road. It took 30 days. Then I called him and asked him as to why he didn’t come. So, he said that he would send his guy over to my house as soon as possible. I asked him if he could come over to take a look at the roof. He then came back and took a look at the roof. I told him that there was another guy who came from another company who said that I had a hole in my roof. He asked me where it was and I tried to tell him where it was. So, his responsiveness wasn’t very good. He told me that the guy would be there in between doing the other jobs. They did come on a Saturday when we weren’t at home. Then I thought he would come during the week, but my parents were here all week and they didn’t see him. I never said he was a liar, but I just told him that my parents were here all week and they didn’t see him here. So, he started yelling at me. When Kevin called me with the latest bill, he said he did a lot of other work like some caulking here and there. They were supposed to do everything the first time, but they didn’t.

Here's the letter I sent to Ray Kaller when the job was completed. Mr. Raymond Kaller, President R. Kaller & Sons One Union Hill Road West Conshohocken, PA 19428 Dear Ray, As you know, the Kaller crew finished up putting a new roof on our 200-year old house earlier this week. And all we can say is ?Wow!? When Emily and I met with you and Kevin in that Haddonfield coffee shop back in August before signing the contract, you said that we were about to have the best contractor experience of our lives. And were you ever right! [We met Kevin in Haddonfield so he could show us several completed and in-progress Kaller roofing jobs.] From our first meeting with Kevin to our walk around the place admiring our new roof after the crew had left for the final time, the experience was just superb. (We have walked around the property admiring the roof and enhanced chimneys many times since.) The key, of course, is the people. So let me start with Kevin Creighton, one of your point men. Kevin?s productive use of technology was tremendously impressive. He used his camera to take pictures of our old roof, of course. But he used his laptop to bring up before and after photos of other Kaller jobs in ?case study? fashion: Here is what it looked like; here are the problems we faced; here?s how we solved those problems; and here are the final results. (He also used a series of photos to show us the process the company follows when, say, installing flashing around a chimney. Very informative and helpful.) Chuck Beishl was equally impressive serving as foreman. I know Eric is a foreman in his own right, and we were certainly very impressed with him, too. Perry, Richie, Carlos, and José were also top-notch. My father taught me how to use tools and how to build and repair things. He always insisted that I do things ?right.? The word meticulous sums it up as well as anything. Well, every one of these guys was meticulous. And each of them had so many skills! (I say this as the author of over 200 videos and print publications designed to show young people what skills are required to succeed in a wide variety of occupations. I do pay attention.) They were also delightfully personable. Chuck managed everything with skill and grace, words he probably wouldn?t use himself, so perhaps I should just say, ?The job went very smoothly, thanks to Chuck.? The crew took great care to protect our antique, wavy-glass windows and metal roofs during the demolition of the old roofs. They didn?t play a radio?important to Emily and me because we work at home. And they cleaned up everything before they left. You and Kevin both visited the job site to check on the progress, which Emily and I really appreciated. We?ve been homeowners for nearly 34 years, and this really was the very best contractor experience we?ve ever had. As you know, we have an old tin-roofed barn and a shake-roofed vacation-rental cottage on the property. They?re both going to need some attention in the future. There is simply no doubt about the company we?ll hire to do the work: R. Kaller & Sons. Thanks for a fantastic job. Sincerely, Alfred Glossbrenner
Description of Work: Please note that the company we hired is R. Kaller & Sons of West Conshohocken, PA. Apparently the original Mr. Kaller had several sons, and several of them own and operate their own roofing firms. Roof: Removed a four-inch carpet of moss and the cement-asbestos shingles that lay under it. That roof dated from 1928, and disposal was not a problem because the asbestos fibers were locked up in the cement. The material is not "friable." Removed the cedar shakes of what may have been the original roof installed when the house was built in 1820. This was really hard, dusty work. (They wore the proper masks for the job.) Then they had to haul up and cut plywood to install on the bare rafters and lath. There was no plywood in 1820. They applied waterproof paper to the plywood but used some special kind of material at the roof edges. Then the Certainteed Grand Manor asphalt shingles. We chose the color "Gatehouse Slate." It's a "dimensional" shingle, and we're thrilled with the way it looks. We were also thrilled when a neighbor who tracked our progress every time she drove by called at the end of the job to say that our new slate roof looked great. She's a good friend, so, of course we told her the truth. Installed new copper valleys, new copper flashing around our three chimneys, a pole gutter, and wrapped two soil pipes in copper. Chimneys: wrapped with wire mesh, stuccoed, and painted to match the house color. Left the top brick details exposed. A very nice effect. As the owners of an antique house, we care a lot about details like that. Carpentry: Replaced, flashed, and painted the clapboards encasing the dormers. Other work: Repaired a serious leak in the corregated iron roof of the barn; repaired several spots on the cedar shake roof of our rental cottage; made some copper pieces to fix our lightning rods. During the job, our next door neighbor hired R. Kaller & Sons to do some repairs on his real slate roof. When I asked our foreman whether he'd be back to handle that job, he said no, they'd probably send a couple of guys who specialize in slate. "We can all do everything," he said, "but each of us has a couple of specialties." I did not make any kind of study, but we had an average of six guys here for two weeks, and it sure looked to me as though every guy really can do and does everything. And they do it well. And it's a happy crew. They didn't play the radio (important to us since we are writers who work at home), though occasionally one of two of them would spontaneously burst out in song. I don't know who it was, but one of the guys told Emily that R. Kaller offered the "best package" of perks and compensation. For example, Kaller lets the guys who have company trucks drive them home at night instead of requiring them to drive their own cars to headquarters each day to pick up their trucks. That saves the guys hours over the course of a month. (All the trucks are red, by the way. I suppose it's a branding thing.) Finally, Kevin Creighton, our R. Kaller & Sons sales representative, told us that even during the Great Recession, the company had not laid anybody off. Instead the owner, Ray Kaller, employed them to work on his own house. (The pictures of what they did are fabulous.)

I was pretty pleased with their price. They have a pretty reasonable price. The quotes that we got from other companies were a lot more expensive for slate maintenance. I would probably use their services in the future.

Kaller's did a good job considering how big this project was. We had some disagreements on the quality of the work on a couple of places however they completed the work to my specifications.
Description of Work: Kaller removed all the old shingles and cleaned down to the wood, resurfaced the roof over the front porch, rebuilt the wood awning and replaced 150 slates on our roof. They hauled away the removed material. Kaller's charged a time and material fee as opposed to a flat rate fee. This fee ended up being more than the initial estimate. My home is 2288 square feet.
